The Main Event for the 2005 World Series of Poker

Sunday, May 21st, 2006

The Main Event for the World Series of Poker is what defines the ultimate challenge in Texas No Limit Hold’Em. In 2005, 5,619 players sat down to compete for 9 days in order to get a chance at the $7,500,000 first prize. Everyone who was lucky enough to reach the final table became an instant millionaire. And the total prize pool was also impressive, reaching $52,818,610 dollars! But to even have a shot at the great amounts of cash, players had to survive the elimination rounds of the tournament.

With a field so large the competitors were split up into 3 groups, each competing on one of 3 days: Day 1A, 1B & 1C, which were very long and brutal for some. The elimination goal was to play down to 500 to 600 for each daily round. The first day, Day 1A, lasted 15 hours and 25 minutes for the 1,885 players who competed in order to continue on with only 663 players surviving that round. Day 1B began with 1,857 players stopping at 593 contestants. And Day 1C started with 1,877 entrants and ended up with 608 after the dust settled. At this point the total field has dropped from 5,619 to 1,864. While a lot of players had their pocket A’s cracked like eggs at the RIO’s breakfast buffet over this 3 day period, numerous others had outstanding performances. Sam Farha, Lee Watkinson, Jim Meehan, Robert Mizrachi and Robert Mizrachi did well. Now at this point last year’s champ Greg Raymer is holding at 469th, but you’ll hear a lot more from him before this is over.

Day 2 saw the field whittled from 1,864 to 569 and it had a lot of activity. Within the first hour 2003 WSOP champ Chris Moneymaker, Gus Hansen, David Sklansky and Marcel Luske were among those leaving for good. Greg Raymer decided it was time to play poker as he began sending people home along with raising his standing to 9th from 469th the day before. WSOP champion Dan Harrington who made it to the Main Event final table for the past 2 years was eliminated. Layne Flack had an excellent day at the ESPN table making his stack grow, even cracking pocket A’s held by other players in the process.

Day 3 was exciting because there were 569 players and the payouts began at position 560. It was good for almost everyone but Karl Ygborn who received no money period when he became the “bubble boy”, finishing in position 561. However, Harrah’s awarded him a free seat to the 2006 WSOP Main Event for next year! After the bubble burst, players were leaving the tables left and right to collect their money, evidence of the fact that many players were drained and very tired. Raymer continued to pound away with an effort that vaulted him to number one in the chip count for Day 3. Other notables were Farzad Bonyadi, Phil Ivey, Minh Ly, 1994 WSOP champ Russ Hamilton and Brad Kondracki who has also done very well so far. At the end of this day there were 185 players left.

Days 4 and 5 raised the bar and intensity of play with Greg Raymer continuing to bust out players left and right. Lots of upsets with names like Paul Darden, David Plastik, Howard Lederer, J. C. Tran, Nani Dollison, Mike Wattel and Webber Kang being eliminated. Incredible performances by players like Tiffany Williamson, Brad Kondracki and Aaron Kanter will be seen by all on ESPN. By the time Day 5 ends 11 1/2 hours later, there are 27 players left that will continue the Main Event at Binion’s in downtown Las Vegas.

As Day 6 began at Binion’s, the goal was to narrow the field from 27 to the 9 needed for the final table. Greg Raymer’s bid to repeat a championship was ended with the titan leaving in 25th place. Everyone including the ESPN crew gave him a standing ovation as he left the tables. Others who went out on this day include Phil Ivey in 20th and Minh Ly in 19th. Tiffany Williamson left in 15th and also went out with a standing ovation. The eliminations continued until the 9 for the final table was reached. Those players were Mike Matusow, Aaron Kanter, Andrew Black, Joseph Hachem, Steven Dannenmann, John Barch, Daniel Bergsdorf, Scott Lazar and Brad Kondracki. When Day 7 began, no one knew it would be the longest final table in WSOP history. One by one, each new millionaire left the table after being busted out until only Steven Dannenmann and Joseph Hachem remained. At the final table when this heads up took place as is tradition at the WSOP, the prize money was brought to the table with an armed guard. The amount of $100 bills took up so much room to where it covered the entire poker table — two feet high! Both players were tired as after 6 hands it was over and Joseph Hachem became the WSOP champion, taking home to Australia $7,500,000 and a beautiful diamond ring that only the Main Event champions can receive.

I Have A Problem Gambling And Now I Have Lost Everything

Saturday, May 20th, 2006

I received an email on January 28, 2006 from a compulsive gambler who stated “I have a problem gambling and now I have lost everything, please help me”. This email really concerned me since I had received over thirty similar emails over the passed few months. I am also amazed that only a year ago things seem to be less dramatic then they are right now when it comes to gambling addiction. The accelerated growth in this addiction is paralleled to the growth in the gaming industry. A significant amount of our population has now been exposed to this industry

Now that people are addicted to gambling, what should we do? This is a very difficult question to answer but I believe education and awareness to help those inflicted with this hideous addiction.

I have received several emails from people who believe their solutions would help decrease the accelerated growth of those addicted to gambling. The following are examples of those emails:

Outlaw all forms of gambling.

Regulate the gaming industry

Remove all ATM machines from gambling establishments especially casinos that have slot machines.

No Check cashing

No alcohol allowed in casinos

Gambling establishments should not be allowed to use the postal service to send incentives for people to come to their place to gamble.

No large billboard advertising.

No Commercials or sponsoring of the local news.

The above email comments are from those to have suffered due to gambling. It’s not only the gambler but their family and friends have also been negatively affected.

Remember these words “I have a problem gambling and I have lost everything”, because this could be you. If you even have the slightest notion you have a problem gambling, face it straight on and you have a chance to recover before you lose everything you have worked so hard for.

If you are one of the one’s who have lost everything, you can rebuild your life and move forward. There are so many people who have walked in your shoes. I know this is very painful, but each day will get brighter and brighter.

The good news is there is hope for people to recover from this addiction.

Sports Betting and Customer Service

Thursday, May 18th, 2006

When looking for a sports betting site online, one of the most important things to look at is the level of customer service that a site provides. You never want to do business with a site that does not offer top notch customer support. Even though this may not seem like a big deal, and definitely is. Waiting for an answer to an important question can be very frustrating. This is especially true if you need an answer quickly.

One way to find out if a customer service department is reliable or not is by simply testing them out. Give the customer service department a call and ask them a couple questions. This will give you a good feel for what kind of support you would get on a daily basis. If you have to hold the line for an hour before somebody helps you, you may want to consider finding another site. Also, don’t just give them a call. Send an email to the customer service department as well. This is sometimes the quickest way of getting an answer. So by testing out both of these avenues you will be able to get an overall feel for the level of service that they provide.

It is also very important to be dealing with a good customer service department in case you run into payment issues. If your credit card is being overcharged for some reason you will definitely need to speak with a customer service rep. On the other end of the spectrum, if you are not receiving your pay outs on time you will need to find out why.

The customer service department is one of the most important aspects to look at when choosing an online sports betting site. Be sure to do your homework in this area; you will be happy that you did the first time you need to contact them.

Casino Games - Poker

Wednesday, May 17th, 2006

As we move further and further into the age of technology, the Internet continues to evolve and create more entertainment options almost on a daily basis. So it comes as no surprise that some of your favorite casino games can now be found in online casino domains. And perhaps one of the more popular games found in online casinos is Poker.

There are numerous online chat and game rooms devoted to casino style Poker. Oftentimes, the style of play varies from site to site. Some of the more popular types of online Poker are: Texas Hold’em, Omaha Hold’em, Omaha Hi-Lo, 5 Card Stud and 7 Card Stud, to name a few. Due to the fact that there are so many different online casinos featuring Poker rooms, there can be a plethora of different types of games to choose from.

There are several differences between the traditional form of Poker playing and participating in an online Poker game in a virtual casino. The first big difference is that there is a lack of the physical interaction that is so vital to a great Poker game. Body language is a big part of the game of Poker and is a missing component of online casinos.

However, in contrast, players have a better chance of success in an online casino, particularly with online Poker games, as they are able to maintain more than one hand at a time. Many times, savvy players will participate at several different tables within the online casino to increase their chances for winning. Players are also often allowed to enter into the game with more reasonable bets and are often able to catch tips and explanation with the casino’s website features. This can come in handy when establishing which type of game the player would like to enter.

Online casinos offer many different casino games. Just be sure to read all of the rules and regulations of each game before participating and as with any online venture, be sure that you are on a secured site, particularly when exchanging monetary information. After reviewing the online casino rules, it’s time to have some gambling fun!

How to Get the Edge and Win at Online Betting Exchanges

Tuesday, May 16th, 2006

The evolution of the online betting exchange is the answer to a struggling speculator’s prayer. Whether you seek fast action as a daytrader or prefer the slower-paced analysis of finding pre-event value plays, this environment can be the solution. It doesn’t matter if you are only interested in the daily financial closings, or if you are open minded enough to speculate in any market where you can get an edge(hopefully you find yourself in the latter camp). The ability to participate in a diverse, well-run exchange where participants freely match wits among themselves removes many of the obstacles to successful speculation.

There are several reasons for this, but the most obvious is that middlemen (such as brokers) have been taken out of the trading equation! No broker taking a commission from your side of an opened trade, no broker taking a commission from your opponent’s side of an opened trade, no broker taking a commission from your side of the closed trade, and no broker taking a commission from your opponent’s side of the closed trade. That adds up to a whole lot more money left on the table, and hopefully you already understand why this makes all the difference in the world.

Yes, there are exchange fees. Betting exchanges are not a charity either. However, these fees are minimal. Compared to broker commissions, they are like an anthill against a mountain. As a smart trader you will be paying less in exchange fees than the average player anyway, as you are about to learn.

Some of the better exchanges employ Market Makers to provide contract liquidity. The spreads are reasonable, and any quote that has what you think is too large of a spread can be exploited by you for profits. Not only can you “play market maker” by stepping in front of the bid and ask prices, but as an individual you can become an official market maker yourself if you choose. Try doing that in the stock or commodities markets!

You will need to make some adjustments from the kind of trading you are familiar with. ( Fortunately the biggest adjustment is that you can now trade with an edge instead of fighting one.) It’s going to take a little getting used to the marketplace if you are a newbie. Keep an open mind and be willing to put the past behind you and explore new markets.

Most commodities are not available to trade, even at the larger betting exchanges (Betfair, Tradesports, Hedgestreet, and Matchbook). You can trade Oil, Gold, and the major currency pairs - and of course stock market indices. You must trade these in the formats that they are offered in. Stock indices have Intraday, Daily, Weekly, and Year End contracts, while most currencies and commodities only trade via Year End contracts. Some markets see higher volume than others. My advice is to stick to the higher volume contracts so your positions will be liquid. This way you can get out with a profit when the market moves in your direction, and cut your losses short when it doesn’t.

If daytrading is your thing, you can do that with the stock indices and also sporting events. You will likely find it much easier to open good intraday positions on in-running sporting events than on the vehicles you were daytrading before.

For all you may be giving up with your old broker account, you are gaining more with a betting exchange account. There are always new contracts being added - fun markets where you can clearly see how to get an advantage. For example, you can wager on the release of major economic numbers that impact the financial markets directly. Current events such as the passage of new laws or appointments of governmental positions. Entertainment awards and weekend box office receipts. The outcome of high profile court cases, international affairs, and hurricane paths. And of course every major sport including golf, NASCAR, and tennis.

They are always coming up with new stuff. For anything that people have an interest in the outcome of, a futures contract can be (and often is) created at the betting exchanges. Enter and exit your positions wisely, employ good money management rules, and watch your account balance soar.

The Racing Form And My Professional Handicapping Analysis, How I Did It!

Monday, May 15th, 2006

The daily racing form was first published in Chicago on Nov. 17 1894, and since then it’s been the top tool to handicap thoroughbreds. Yes 113 years old, the daily racing form has evolved to be a very exact record keeping resource. Within its pages you can find hundreds of angles to play the ponies. The thing is to develop your own angles, once you get familiar with the form, it will become natural. Yes it captures so many variables that it makes its analysis a beautiful and extravagant challenge. When I first started to visit the race track I was in complete ignorance I just liked the thrill of the race and the uncertainty usually associated with luck.

In time I was introduced to the mystical Racing Form and the first variable that caught my eye was the speed index, I used to add it all together and that way I could compare the fastest horse in the field. It was fun for a wile but I did realize that it wasn’t very accurate, then I started to base my assumptions on track conditions, this made my handicapping a bit more successful.

It also made it a lot more complex, in the beginning I just used one factor to compare the horses, and now I was including in the mix muddy track, fast track, slow track, turf, and soon after I was also including trainers win percentage, jockey win percentage, age of the horses, equipment changes, workout patterns, layoff patterns, even the looks of the trainer, believe it or not I used to stay in the saddling paddock trying to figure out the confidence of the trainers and owners in their horses.

In other words I was just going nowhere. I started to fool myself.

Handicapping Thoroughbreds is a very complex task, you have to develop a method to follow religiously; and don’t get carried away with all the information the racing form provides. It is just so extensive that you need a formal strategy to follow and this is very difficult to handle. I am not saying that no body can, no, in fact I have seen professional annalists manage a whole race card in a couple of hours. But for regular people just like me the way to go is a system, if you can’t get a good idea or a good pattern, copy a ready made system. But be careful it is amazing how far some guys can go for their horses.

Some systems are just incredible, and impossible to profit with, when looking for a system make sure you get a proven system, try to get the best one you can buy, remember you are going to be investing your hard work money with it. And remember to bring a ton of luck every time you go to the track, luck is a very strange lady and some times she just stays home. The thoroughbred tracks are the most mystical places; there you can contemplate the whole world.

Dangers of Stress While Playing UK Bingo

Saturday, May 13th, 2006

There are various reasons why people begin playing UK bingo, such as for money, for company, for experiencing that rush of adrenaline, or simply to have a good time. Peaks and pitfalls, highs and lows, thrill and kills, you name it – online bingo provides all these and more. Just as in any other game where stakes are high, this heightened excitement has its own fair share of positive and negative impact on the players.

Over the years, the popularity of bingo has traversed all over the world. Since the time the online bingo version was introduced, enthusiasts of the game have been able to play from within the confines of their homes. However, there are many players who still prefer soaking in the excitement of the game by playing it at the local town hall or the casino.

Bingo- The Stress Magnet

The excitement involved in a game of bingo can also drive a person to the other side of the spectrum. Getting too engrossed in the game, one’s excitement level could fluctuate; this could have a negative effect on those who have high blood pressure or heart problems. According to some studies, people who play bingo are prone to get easily worked up and consequently have high-stress, high-powered careers. It has been observed that work related stress is far less than the stress generated while playing bingo. There have been several instances of people having lost their jobs because of bingo-related stress impacting their performance at work.

Violence

Other than the health related drawbacks, bingo is also known to ignite passions and can cause players to get involved in violent fights. At bingo halls and public bingo games, it has been noticed that people who are by nature, short-tempered tend to be easily drawn into fights. This could have disastrous consequences, if someone is hurt.

In spite of the above-mentioned risks, bingo can still be an enjoyable stress-buster if players accept that it is only a game, take care of their health and control their behavior.
