Texas Hold’em Poker - a Novices Guide Part 1

Saturday, October 21st, 2006

Texas holdem is the poker player’s game of choice and where the big prize money is to be made. Many players want to play Texas Holdem to win and win big.

Here we will cover the basics to get you started on your route to playing Texas Holdem and hopefully winning some big pots.

In its no limit form, it is used now in world class poker tournaments, and is the most popular of all the poker games today by far.

The game is played from two to ten players usually, though it can accommodate up to 22.

Playing the Game

To begin, the dealer will deal 2 cards face down to each player (these are known as a players ‘hole cards’).

The first round of betting will then follow immediately.

As the initial round of betting completes, the dealer will deal the first 3 ‘community cards’ face up (this is also called the ‘flop’). The second round of betting then follows.

At this point, the dealer will deal the 4th community card, again face up (called the ‘turn’ or fourth street). The third round of betting then follows.

The dealer will deal 5th community card face up (called the ‘river’ or fifth street), and the 4th and then the final round of betting begins.

All players use any combination of their 2 hole cards plus the 5 community cards to create the best possible 5 card poker hand.

The highest scoring hand then wins the pot and the hand is completed

Rules and Playing Etiquette

Although it’s a relatively easy game to learn, there is still a great deal of strategy to follow if you aim to win. Let’s start with the basics of the game and the order of play.

Where you happened to be sitting can be crucial in Texas Hold’em.

For example, if you are the last to act on a particular hand, it allows you to watch and react to what opponents are doing.

Keep in mind if your first you are at severe disadvantage as you do not know how to react as the players have given you no indication of how strong or weak their hands might be.

The rule is that the dealer is always the last to act in a given round of Texas Hold’em.

So, in order to keep the game fair, there is dealer rotation around the table.

The ‘dealer’ (or virtual dealer) has the advantage of acting last for any round. After the end of every round the dealer button rotates one player clockwise.

In Texas Hold’em not every player will paying an ante.

Instead, the first 2 players to the left of the dealer must post ‘blind bets’ before the dealer deals the first 2 cards.

They are known as ‘blind bets’ as the player pays the bets before seeing their cards. They therefore enter the game ‘blind’ with no idea how strong or weak their hand is

Actually the first player to the left of the dealer makes a ‘small blind’ bet, and the second player to the left of the dealer makes a ‘big blind’ bet. This works in the following way

The ‘big blind’ bet will equal the small bet, and the ‘small blind’ bet will be about half of the small bet.

For example a $20/$40 game would have a big blind of $20 and a small blind of $10. The first round of betting use the blinds to begin

Therefore, the $20 big blind would be the starting amount players must call to remain in the hand.

Also if no players raise the starting bet, the blinds are not required to re-pay their bet to remain.

That is, if no player raises the starting bet the big blind would not need to pay anything more to stay in, the small blind would have to pay the balance of the $20 bet, which in this case would be $10 to remain.

Also, it’s crucial to remember that players ‘hole cards’ are only as good as the community cards. What does this effectively mean?

It means that having an A-K in the hole is not very good odds for the player.

If the community cards are, say Q-Q-9-9-J. The cards do not match into any hand of value.

Furthermore, it can be assumed some other player could make a full house of queens or nines!

Finally, it’s very useful to watch the flop.

You can gauge the quality of your hand as 5 of your 7 cards can tell you how good your hand is in relation to the others, by watching the way they bet or react.

The Best Hand Does Not Always Win!

This covers the basics of Texas Holdem; the rest is strategy and experience.

Texas Holdem is a game of psychology and not always the best hand wins.

The psychology of Texas Holdem is not learned over night. It takes a long time and you need practice on how to play your cards, or more importantly the players you are competing with.

It is the psychological aspect that makes the game so exciting. In Texas Holdem it’s a brutal battle where only the strong survive but if you can the rewards can be immense.

Good Luck!

No-Limit Texas Hold’em Strategy- The Importance of Staying Positive

Friday, October 20th, 2006

The ups and downs of poker really test a person’s character. How do you react to a bad beat? How do you play after you have made a big mistake? In order to become a great poker player, you need to stay positive after making mistakes. Everyone will make mistakes in poker. Poker is a game of incomplete information, it is impossible to be correct all the time. Sometimes you will simply be off your game and unable to make good reads. The natural reaction when playing bad is to tilt. Emotions start to get the best of you and distract your mind from playing your best game. You have to retrain your mind to stay positive when things are not going your way. Emotions can cause you to become irrational about the game. You may start to blame the cards, your opponents, or anything else that has nothing to do with your playing ability. Face the facts, some people win and most people lose. The winners are simply better at controlling their emotions when things get really tough. The winners have trained their mind to put negativity into the back of their mind. The winners always stay positive or get out of a game when they are playing bad.

Anyone can go on an amazing run and win a ton of money in a short period of time. The best players are excellent at stopping loss before it puts them into a huge hole. It is very possible to make huge profits in one month and then lose it all back in a couple a days. Poker will test every part of your innate human system. If you are unable to control your emotions, your opponents will take advantage. The difference between a good player and a world-class player is the ability to control emotions when things are going bad. The next time things are going bad, actively attempt to stay positive and play your best game. Most times it is best to simply get out of the game and come back when you are more focused.

Casino Games - There is Something for Everyone

Thursday, October 19th, 2006

Casino games are as diverse as the gambling houses themselves. Poker alone includes variations such as stud, draw, Texas Hold-em and many others. Gambling houses often feature so many games it’s hard to know where to start. Indeed, some people take their first night at a given casino as sort of an orientation tour to learn what kind of gambling is on offer.

The casino’s electronic versions of the regular games are also quirky and fun. There are serious video poker players who stake out the high-paying machines, and gamble only on them. Those who watch a serious video poker player long enough will learn some of their strategies, like the “Jacks or better” version where players favor hands, as the name implies, with a face card in it.

Casino dice games are exciting, but sometimes complicated. Variations include “street craps,” “bank craps” and what some people call “Grand Hazard”. It’s good to know what version of game is going on at the table before you lay your money down. Is the casino paying winners who roll seven or eleven? Or are you gambling, roulette style; on the numbers that come up on the dice roll?

Roulette is said to be one of the most challenging games in the casino. The roulette wheel has up to 38 numbered positions for the little ball to land in. You can start your gambling on a single number, odds or evens and other combinations. If you are a beginner, it’s best to research this one online or at your local bookstore first, as the game can be not only mesmerizing, but also expensive for a beginner.

Casino games are fun, but sometimes it’s a good idea to research first, learn the rules, and then go to the casino armed with your understanding of the rules. This insures maximum fun and a good night out. So what are you waiting for? Familiarize yourself with casino rules and get started having fun!

Discipline In Poker

Wednesday, October 18th, 2006

I was speaking to a friend of mine who was told me that after he plays for about an hour he is able to doule his bankroll going into the game. After another hou or so he says that he ends up losing all of his winnings and the money he came in with oiginally. He also explained how he was losing his money because he could not keep could not keep focus and he was losing his consintation.

This is a very easy problem to overcome. One the has plagued even the bes of poker players. I myself used to play and lose money money after winning a few hands but that all ended as time passed, I read strategies and books, and really began to focus and learn about poker.

One of the first things I did was stop playing after I won money. This way I would not begin to lose money. I got rid of the habbit of playing loose after I won money and I also stoped betting when I had weak hands. When you leave after you win money, you will only know hoq to win and you will remove the actions that cause you to lose money Of course if you are not making money there are other strategies

This is another strategy used to help you anylize how you win and how you lose. If you print out the games you win, you can study them and use them as a reference in the future. This is a great way to learn what wins and what loses. When many people start out, they beleive that pocket aces are the best hand in the game. Statistics will tell you that they are, but proffessionals will tell you that this hand is not as good as it may seem. That is a topic for another day…

If you are winning and then start losing, Leave the table and do something else. This way, you will keep your money and you will be happy.

One huge mistake my friend made was to play 2 tables at once. This is not a good move. This causes you to lose money in actuality because you can not concentrate on either one now.

Gambling Online - Find The Best Bets With The Best Odds Here!

Tuesday, October 17th, 2006

If you are gambling online and looking to play games of chance, then to make money you need to know the bets with the best odds of success.

Do you know the best bets in Baccarat, Roulette, craps and slots? If you don’t and you’re gambling online then you will do after reading this!

There is nothing you can do to influence the outcome of games of chance, i.e. you can’t apply systems. Many people buy them off the net but they don’t work and you will soon know why.

To increase your odds of success all you can do is pick the bet with the best odds and this means knowing the theory of probability.

Probability is a branch of mathematics that deals with calculating the likelihood of an event’s occurrence, which is expressed as a number between 1 and 0.

An event with a probability of 1 is considered a certainty:

For example, take the toss of a coin the probability of a coin toss resulting in either “heads” or “tails” is 1, because there are no other options, assuming the coin will land flat i.e. the probability is 0.

An event with a probability of .5 is considered to have equal odds of occurring or not occurring:

For example, the probability of a coin toss resulting in “heads” is .5; this is because the toss is equally as likely to result in “tails.”

Probability theory applies precise calculations to quantify uncertain measures of random events.

The odds don’t change!

A fundamental mistake many gamblers make is to assume the odds get better if an event happens several times in a row. For example, if heads comes up 20 or 100 times in a row, the odds do not change for heads coming up on the next toss. There still 50 – 50% or .5.

When gambling online in games of chance, systems that try and predict when the odds are in your favor can’t work, as the odds are fixed and don’t move.

Let’s take a look at an example that relates to gambling online in game of chance and put in the house edge.

Odds & the house edge

We are offering to pay you odds of 10 to 1 (you win $11.00 minus the $1 you paid to place the bet. Of course if we paid you the correct odds of 12:1 things would of course, even themselves out over the long run but, in this example we have given you worse odds and this represents our edge.

The advantage or edge we have charged you is similar to the one you will encounter in a casino when gambling online

Let’s take a look at the best odds in 3 games

Roulette

The “en prison” bet on European tables is just 1.35%, making it the best bet

Baccarat

Bets on the banker have the best odds and house edge is just 1.06%

Craps

Best bet by far is the odds bet at (0%). Consider that many players pick other bets with edges of 10 or more against them and you can see why they lose! Forget luck or hunches the best bets are the ones above

Slots

You should read our other articles on them for in depth view of chances of success. Odds are a lot worse than ones above, but jackpots can be huge!

The best odds give you the best chance of winning

Here you will see that the odds are fixed in games of chance when gambling online and if you know the bets with the best odds you have as much chance of making money as anyone else.

Online Football Betting

Monday, October 16th, 2006

Online football betting is all about the probabilities and the skills of the bettor. When a bettor manages to interpret statistics and odds, has the right skills as a football fan and pays attention to all the different events inside the NFL football world, online football betting becomes not only a hobby, but a real economic income. And who doesn’t likes to win money by just clicking a button in a website or making a call? Well, if you like risks and patience, you can win a lot of money in online football betting.

As I mention before, statistics and online football betting odds are important factors. These sports wagering odds are represented in many ways in online football betting. point spread and money lines are the most important odds that represent the probability of the outcome of the game. These odds are placed in such a way that balances the amount of persons that will bet on either one team or another, so the sportsbook always has profits.

Picks are a fundamental part of online football betting since they help bettors to take the best decision possible. Getting picks from whatever source possible is a good strategy. You can search the web for free picks, ask your friends for opinion or even pay for specialized sites that offer picks from specialists. You must take any pick in consideration based on the reliability of the source, but try not to disharge any pick, since opinion is a matter of perspective, and when you have a wider perspective, you can make a better decision.

Online football betting is all about the knowledge you collect, about the valuable information that can help you make the right bet at the right time. As some say, it is skill and experience that helps you on the long run and this can be achieved only by betting, wining or loosing, you will finally learn something with every bet that you make.

Take a break on your work and start searching for online football betting odds to start learning about the different betting odds and their purpose. Lookout for free picks so you get a basic understanding of how they work and how is it they get to that conclusion, and of course try making a bet so you get the feel of online football betting.

How to Play Caribbean Stud Poker

Sunday, October 15th, 2006

In an effort to expand the casino experience, many casinos began offering variations of their classic games. Poker is a game that is usually played against other players, but casinos wanted to come up with variations that could be played against the House. One such variation is Caribbean Stud.

Caribbean Stud, which can be found at both live and online gaming casinos, is a variation of poker that is quite simple to learn and play. As in Blackjack, players start out by betting however many chips they wish, within the limits stated at that table. They can also place $1 down for a shot at the Progressive Jackpot. The Progressive Jackpot, which grows as players bet at it until it hits, will pay you if you are dealt a Royal Flush. If you are dealt a regular straight flush, you get ten percent of the Jackpot. You will also get a small piece of the Jackpot for being dealt a flush, full house or four of a kind, for amounts ranging from $50-$500 depending on the strength of your hand and what your particular casino’s payout structure is.

Once the bets are placed, you are dealt five cards. The dealer is also dealt five cards, but one of his cards is exposed for the entire table to see. Look at your cards and determine what your best five card poker hand is. If you don’t like your hand, fold and forfeit your initial bet. If you do, you must put up an amount equal to double your initial wager to continue. Once the decisions are made to bet or fold, the dealer exposes his entire hand.

Once the dealer exposes his hand, he must qualify. A qualifying hand is one that is at least Ace-King high. Of course, all better hands, such as a pair on up, qualify. An example of a hand that would not qualify would be 2, 3, 5, 7, 9 of different suits. 2, 2, 5, 7, 9 would qualify, since you have a pair. A hand of 9, 7, Q, 4, A would not qualify, since this would be an Ace-Queen high not Ace-King. If the dealer does not qualify, the hand is over. Players win their initial bet, and tie their second bet. If the dealer qualifies and has a stronger hand than the player, the dealer wins all bets. If the player has a stronger hand, he gets paid even money on his initial bet and gets paid odds on his second bet. The odds are even money for a pair down to Ace-King, 2 to 1 for two pair, 3-1 for three of a kind, 4-1 for a straight, 5-1 for a flush, 7-1 for a full house, 20-1 for four of a kind, 50-1 for a straight flush, and 100-1 for a Royal Flush. These are typical odds for a Caribbean Stud table; different casinos may vary slightly in how they pay out.

If you are playing Caribbean Stud online, you have the luxury of playing on a number of different sites. Shop around and get the best payout odds you can find. This will enhance your enjoyment of the game.

Do the Laundry or Win the Lottery

Saturday, October 14th, 2006

On the Friday afternoon drive home, I’m relieved the weekend has finally arrived. Sleeping in, afternoons at the pool and…the looming pile of clothes on the laundry room floor! The endless list of household tasks never seems to go away. While stopping for gas along the highway, I pick up a few lottery tickets for the Saturday night draw.

Household chores revolve in an endless cycle of procrastination. No one really looks forward to pre-treating, washing, drying, folding and putting away laundry week in and week out. Laundry doesn’t appreciate diligence. Even if you spend the entire day flipping loads and folding, there would still be laundry in the basket tomorrow.

The procrastination strategy is waiting until the very last pair of socks in the drawer has been worn. Then it’s crisis mode. You absolutely have to do laundry now…but you’re already late for work! You should’ve done it over the weekend.

I pull into the driveway and head towards the house. Down the hallway from the front door lies the laundry room – with the looming laundry right where it was this morning. Taking the lottery tickets out of my pocket, I stick them to the refrigerator.

Like laundry, playing the lottery also has a definite value of success and failure in the cycle of procrastination. You can faithfully buy tickets and never win the jackpot, but it will be there again tomorrow whether you win or not. However, if you put off playing altogether, you won’t win anything at all but regret and the question “What if?”

A reminder to myself of the first thing I will treat myself to when I win the jackpot – someone to do the laundry for me!

Tips for Online Gambling

Friday, October 13th, 2006

Online gaming is a lot of fun. You can get all the excitement of playing in a live casino with none of the hassles. Online casinos have all of your favorite games, and maybe a few you haven’t heard of. As much fun as online casino gaming is, everyone knows it’s a lot more fun when you’re winning. Here are a few tips to maximize your profit margin when gambling online.

First of all, use your bonuses. Virtually every site offers bonuses for signing up with them and for continuing to play with them. A bonus is an amount of money that is released into your account after you play a certain number of hands. This is free money. Use it. You might want to sign up with multiple sites and if you don’t like any one of them, withdraw your bonus once it is released and put the money in the account you prefer (if your casino allows this. Some casinos have “sticky bonuses” which are only good for use betting in their casino).

Second, know the game you are playing. There is no substitute for a good understanding of the basic strategy for whatever game you happen to be playing. Know when to Hit or Stand in Blackjack. Know what the good hands are in poker. Know the odds of the different Craps bets. All of these games have specific strategies that maximize your winning potential and you should learn them. Once you’ve learned them, practice. Online casinos offer “play money” or “play for fun” options. These areas of the site allow you to practice the game of your choice without risking any actual funds. Once you feel like you have the hang of the game, then move on to the real thing.

Also, stay focused on the task at hand. Many of us use the Internet in a haphazard fashion, surfing several different websites, perhaps watching T.V. or talking on the phone at the same time. Normally this is harmless. While gambling on the Internet it can become expensive. Try to schedule your online casino periods for when you know you are going to have a long enough time to play comfortably, without too many interruptions or distractions.

Try to keep careful records of your wins and losses. I know this does not sound like too much fun, but you will be thankful if you do it. This will give you an honest idea of how well you are doing with the game, what strategies have worked for you, under what circumstances you do well or poorly, and if it is worthwhile for you to continue. Money management is important to any gambling game, and this will help you in that regard.

Set a stop-loss amount. There are times when luck is not with you, and at some point you are better off logging off and trying another day. If your losses are too great, you might over play or play badly trying to recoup your losses and make things even worse. You also might end up taking out your frustrations on friends or family, which is definitely not fun. If you decide beforehand how much you can comfortably afford to lose and how much you want to win, your online casino experience will be more pleasant.

Most of us are interested in online casinos to have fun and make a little money in the process. If you follow these rules, you have a better chance in both of these matters. Good luck.

Post Season Posturing

Thursday, October 12th, 2006

Baseball was bountiful for Las Vegas bookmakers in the 2006 Major League season.

Now sports stores are looking to line coffers more during postseason play, which begins with two games Tuesday and continues with two more Wednesday.

The Big Apple has dual postseason interests, while the Golden State has three.

That means two of America’s most poulous locales — one on each coast — has a 5/8th investment in the playoffs.

“They’ll definitely be big interest,” said Las Vegas Hilton oddsmaker and SuperBook supervisor Jeff Sherman, listing the New York Yankees, Los Angeles Dodgers and San Diego Padres as teams that draw the most bettors and backers.

“The Yankees are a huge public team and you’d pretty much have to give them an edge in the American League.

“Any of the four teams could come out of the National League, especially with (pitcher Pedro) Martinez out.

“The Mets are suspect without him.”

Palms book boss Richie Baccelieri, who thinks the National League is more balanced this season than last, doesn’t concur.

“The Mets have the best team, but they’re not dominant like St. Louis, which got beat by Houston, was,” he said.

“Martinez wasn’t dominant in the later part of the year.

“He didn’t do a lot lately.

“I don’t see much dropoff for the Mets.

“NL pitching overall isn’t as strong as it was.”

Last year, the Chicago White Sox went an unbelievable 12-1 in the postseason, sweeping the Astros in four.

Like Sherman, Baccelieri believes the Bronx Bombers are the cream of the American League crop and that Detroit was dumbfounded after the Tigers tanked the last few months, losing the Central Division title to Minnesota the last day of the season.

“They didn’t finish strong,” Sherman observed.

“The Tigers did all they could not to have to play the Yankees in Roundl 1 and still got ‘em.”

“I don’t think you’ll see them lie down and die, though.”

“The way things turned out, the Twins were real good for us,” Baccelieri continued.

“All the division money was on the Tigers and White Sox.

“Nobody bet the Twins.”

The Hilton has liability on Detroit winning the pennant, the Palms on the Tigers capturing the World Series.

“We did good on props and season-win totals,” Sherman said.

“The only thing we lost was the home run championship.”

Philadelphia’s Ryan Howard won that title with 58 round-trippers.

Baccelieri opened the Tigers open at 75-1 and saw them plummet as the season progressed.

He’s not overly concerned, however.

“The Tigers are a big dog in the first round and a big dog in the second,” he said.

Las Vegas hosts a Los Angeles Triple A affiliate and used to bleed Dodger blue with Walt Alston and Tommy LaSorda; Sin City was considered little more than a Chavez Ravine annexation.

These days it’s a mixture of Dodger blue and Padre brown.

“We get both teams’ games on TV and there’s a lot of viewership for both,” Sherman said.

“Let’s just get both in.”

Baccelieri prefers San Diego and forsees a Mets-Padres NL pennant finale.

Sherman’s crystal ball is snowy, but doesn’t forecast a Big Apple Subway Series, which last happened in 2000, when the Yankees won in five.

“No, I don’t think so,” Sherman said.

“Yeah, why not?” Baccelieri countered.

“We have a prop on it.

“‘No’ is minus $4.00 and ‘Yes’ is plus $3.70.”
