Playing Online Bingo

Thursday, December 21st, 2006

Bingo became very popular many years ago. When the game was first introduced it was mainly geared towards the more mature lady. Over the years bingo has become a phenomenon, attracting people of all ages, both male and female.

With the ever-increasing popularity of the online casino industry, bingo had to become the next big thing, and so it has. Over the last year online bingo has gained in momentum with many online bingo halls popping up left and right. They all offer their customers the same incentives as an online casino. People don’t have to go out to play bingo anymore. They can get more for their money in the comfort of their own home

What’s the difference when playing online bingo?

There are many differences when playing online bingo to your local bingo hall. It’s very much like playing bingo in a seaside arcade. In a bingo hall the customer buys their tickets for the session, which includes the national game, and play on the table games for either cash or prizes in between the main sessions of bingo. Online bingo differs because games are played non-stop, 24/7 and offer their customers many choices. There are 75 ball bingo games, which is the American format. The games include winning patterns of different shapes or numbers. There are also the popular 90 ball bingo games, which are the more traditional UK Bingo format. Customers can play many cards at once. Every so often the online bingo hall will offer a progressive game where the prize money is very high, which has to be won in a certain amount of numbers.

One of the great features of playing online bingo is that the numbers are automatically marked off for the customer and when a card is won the customer doesn’t have to call but wins straight away. The customer doesn’t have to worry about missing numbers or pressing a button to call a winning ticket. The online bingo hall does it all for the customer. There is a tactical strategy behind this feature. Online bingo halls don’t just offer their customers bingo but many other games also. There are slot games, video poker and even an online casino facility. While the bingo game is in progress the customer can take part in other games. This is why the numbers are marked off automatically and the games are paid without calling so the customer can play other games simultaneously.

Like online casinos, the online bingo halls offer bonus incentives. Sign up bonuses and monthly bingo bonuses are always offered or depending on certain online bingo halls they may offer their customers a deposit match.

The graphics are always inviting. They’re stylish and glossy, fast and always efficient and secure.

Playing bingo online is great fun and a fantastic alternative to playing at your local bingo hall.

Multi Table Poker Tournament Beginner Tips

Wednesday, December 20th, 2006

Are you ready to win money playing an online poker tournament? Advancing to the money in one of these multi-person tournaments takes some luck but the right strategy can help you to overcome the challenge of trying to win one of these tournaments.

First, start off by playing a low entry-fee tournament. One-dollar and five-dollar entry fees are the way to go if you are first beginning. Don’t be intimidated by the amount of entrants in these tournaments. About 10-15% of these people are just in it to try and get lucky. Don’t fall victim to their early raises or perhaps all-in bets. In the early stages of the tournament, don’t try and cash in on a good hand right away. Some idiot will call your pocket aces with a seven three and beat you with two pair. Simply call and only bet if you know you can’t be beat. Many players will go out early and it is critical that you just survive and pick up a few chips along the way.

This strategy will enable you to move on to the second stage of the tournament. By now, half of the players are gone and you can try to build your chip stack now. Start playing more aggressively and beware of players with bigger stacks trying to push you around. If you have a good hand, don’t be afraid to play it. Now is the time to put yourself in position for the final run and get yourself in position for the money.

If you are lucky enough to make it to the end, the pressure will build drastically. By this time in the tournament, some players are weakening and just waiting for the hand to go all-in on. Stay focused mentally and think about the odds carefully before playing your hand. Try slow-playing that killer hand and trap your opponent into thinking that you have nothing. Chances are he will think you are bluffing and you can bury him.

Finally, don’t get frustrated if you don’t make it very far into your first few tournaments. Work on developing your skills and becoming a good tournament poker player. Stick to your strategy even if you lose a couple of good hands. Chances are, your patience will pay off in the end and you can happily accept your prize money with a feeling of great satisfaction.

Free Online Card Games — Getting Ready for Las Vegas

Tuesday, December 19th, 2006

Free online card games that can be played over the Internet are great for practice to increase your skills or to just have fun with. Being able to take advantage of playing free card games on your computer like poker and video poker can even prepare you for making cash in the future.

Poker is becoming a popular choice of what people are playing now, in particular Texas Hold’Em. Playing for free is the best way to begin learning poker for a person who has no experience. The largest poker room on the Net has around 70,000 simultaneous players who play for real money and approximately 7 million registered users who enjoy playing for fun at the time of this writing. With all the offerings of “play for fun or for real”, it would be a good idea to look at your intentions when choosing a place to play at should you be thinking of eventually playing for cash. You can always find places that give the option to play at no cost, but some places do not offer the option to play for real money.

Video poker is very common in Las Vegas casinos as well as with online casinos. The casinos on the Internet can be played for free, plus you can find others places to play at no cost on Yahoo! Google and MSN. But when you play certain ones like “Jacks or Better”, it is a good idea to study what the payout scale is on the variety you are playing. The goal should be to find a free version that has the same odds as your favorite in Las Vegas, so you can use it to perfect your skills for winning. Keep in mind that just because you see a Jacks or Better sign on the machine in a land based casino or on your computer does not mean that the payouts are all the same. This especially holds true in land based casinos even if the signs in a group of machines are exactly the same. Payout percentages can vary from lows of 92.6% to over 100% for Jacks or Better. Now if you have a hard time locating a no cost version of your favorite, you can purchase software programs for under $40.00 that will not only let you play your favorites, but offer tutorials and counsel your play to help you get better at it.

Sometimes manufacturers of slot and video poker machines will offer versions of their video poker that can be played with no cost to the player. These are the same businesses that build the machines for Las Vegas casinos so you can really have a good time with what they periodically offer for “test play”.

Okay, now let’s talk more about Las Vegas. People spend millions having fun in the casinos there, but why should the fun stop when you leave? It is so easy to find poker software programs for Texas Hold’Em today. But with a little searching you can buy software which features Pai Gow Poker, Caribbean Stud Poker and Let It Ride. And if you like the slots there are also sites that sell CD’s for the actual Blazing 7’s, Double Diamond, Popeye, Blondie, Betty Boop slots and more. You do have to pay one time for it, but you will play for hours with no further cash outlay and be ready for the next trip. Have fun and good luck!

Playing the Texas Lottery

Monday, December 18th, 2006

If you are looking for a fun and exciting way to spend that dollar that is burning a hole in your pocket, Texas Mega Millions just might the answer to your problem. As a member of the twelve state alliance that makes Mega Millions what it is, the Texas Mega Millions lottery is one of the largest lottery games in the United States. From coast to coast, people are purchasing Mega Millions lottery tickets in hopes that they can cash in on one of the largest jackpots in history.

The Texas Mega Millions game consists of six numbers. You must choose five of these numbers between one and fifty-six, and one additional Mega Ball number that falls between one and forty-two. If you match all six of these Texas Mega Millions numbers, you win the big prize. On the off chance that more than one person has a winning ticket, and then the jackpot is split among the winners.

If no one matches the six numbers of the Texas Mega Millions result, then the jackpot rolls over. This means that the jackpot amount is added to the base amount of the next drawing’s jackpot over and over again until someone wins the big prize. With people purchasing Mega Millions lottery tickets in twelve different states, the hype surrounding a large jackpot can only spur more sales, and the cycle continues until one or more lucky people finally walk away with what is most likely upwards of hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Though the odds are not too high that you will win the grand prize, your odds are one to thirty seven that you will win at least the lowest prize in the Texas Mega Millions game. For just matching the Mega Ball, you can win three dollars. Prizes go up from there as you match more and more balls. That way, everyone can be a winner with the Texas Mega Millions game.

Unfortunately the Texas lottery site does not have much information on how the various games are played. There is also a lot of off topic information such as Amber Alerts, and links to blatantly political state websites. The information about where the money goes is vague at best. If you are looking for information about the Texas Lottery you should probably check one of the ancillary sites about the Texas lottery. For a great state this website is disappointing.

Poker and Alcohol

Sunday, December 17th, 2006

What condition are you in during a poker game? In some circles, poker and alcohol go hand in hand in a live game. Does alcohol help or hinder your performance? Interesting question. Many of us have been in a situation where you called a bet you never would have considered if you were sober. You might feel lucky and play more hands. You might be the tight player that starts playing every hand. You recognize these players almost immediately when you sit down. The inebriated player might announce his intentions to the table. His announcement may include an expletive or two. This move tells the rest of the table; I don’t have the best hand, but I’m drunk and don’t care….all in….hiccup.

In this situation the intoxicated player surrenders to the table by alcohol instead of by card play. He will be eliminated because a strong player will sit back and wait for the right cards to take advantage of an impaired player. You could conclude that as the alcohol level goes up, your patience will dwindle. Patience is an important element of the game no matter what your style. I’m sure you have observed a short-stacked player come back from nowhere. They wait for the right hands and make the right bets in the right situation. They are usually sober or close to it.

If you are under the influence of alcohol, you’re trying to make the situation. You will hit a hand here and there, but in the end, the rest of the table has figured out your game plan and that bulls eye is on your back. Do you want to be the player that everyone is gunning for?

On the other hand, has alcohol been the silver bullet in your game. No pun intended. Does it give you the courage to make that call against the chip bully? Whether your sipping Jack Daniels, a fuzzy navel or your locally brewed beer, at some point during a poker game, alcohol gives the most timid player the confidence of ten men.

It’s not some miracle drug, but about letting go of your inhibitions. Has alcohol stripped away your well-honed playing style and turned you into a calling station? This might be you or you have witnessed a player call everything because he has to see it. Either way, loose players make the game interesting. What would the game be if all the action were pure textbook play? Well, we all have good intentions when we sit down, and then Mr. Alcohol comes knocking at the door. He wants to play too.

I’m not saying poker and alcohol don’t mix, but it’s about maintaining a balance between the game that you love to play and having a good time without compromising your poker strategy. So the next time you sit down to play a tournament or cash game with your friends, be sure to buy the table a round.

Bingo - It’s Birth and Beginning

Saturday, December 16th, 2006

The true origin of bingo dates back as far as the mid 16th century and is connected, strangely enough to the unification of Italy in 1530. This unification saw the introduction of a National lottery system, known as “Lo Giuoco del Lotto d’Italia” held each week. Interestingly, this lottery is today a major source of income to the government, contributing over 75 million dollars each year to the budget.

It was the French who developed a passion for “Le Lotto”, as it became known and they adapted their own version of the game that strikes a strong resemblance with today’s version of bingo. Three horizontal and nine vertical rows formed the basis of the card and players would cover their numbers as they were drawn until an entire horizontal row was covered – hence the winner.

Lotto continued to flourish throughout Europe. It was used as an educational tool in Germany to teach children their multiplication tables and even formed the basis of many other games and toys still noticeable in toy stores today. But where and when did Lotto somehow morph into Bingo? Well, the answer lies in what could be described as a compromise – Beano!

Picture the scene. It’s 1929 and a weary and stressed toy salesman by the name of Edwin S. Lowe is driving to Jacksonville, Georgia to prepare for some appointments. Soon after starting his own toy company a year earlier, the market crashed and Mr Lowe’s prospects were looking very bleak indeed.

Before arriving in Jacksonville, Lowe decided to cheer himself up by stopping off at a country carnival, being a night early for his appointments. Only one carnival booth was open and very crowded. The excitement seemed to be generated by a game that was a variation of Lotto, known as Beano. A horseshoe table was covered with numbered cards and beans. Every time a pitchman pulled a wooden disk from an old cigar box and called the number on it, the players reached for a bean and covered the corresponding number on their card, if they had it. When they had totally covered a line, either diagonally, vertically or horizontally, they had to shout Beano! They then received a doll.

Lowe wanted to play, but the game was too popular and no seats were available. What he did notice though was that all the players seemed to be addicted to the game. The pitchman was not able to close and had to eventually chase the players away at 3:00am. The pitchman had apparently picked the game of Lotto in Germany and decided to adapt and bring it to the United States and to rename it Beano. The success of the game on the carnival circuit proved to be highly lucrative.

Back in New York, Lowe invited some friends to his apartment and introduced them to the game. The tension seemed palpable. One time, a player became close to winning and was getting more and more excited. When her final number was called she jumped up in a fit of ecstasy and in all her excitement got herself tongue-tied. Instead of shouting Beano she spat out “Bingo!” Lowe would later describe the “sense of elation” he experienced when he heard her cry. He knew from that moment he was going to introduce this game to the public and name it “Bingo”.

What a success it proved to be for Lowe and his company! As the game came out of the public domain it was hard for it to be trademarked. Entreponeurs emerged from all sides and began their own versions. Lowe graciously asked them to pay just one dollar a year and call their games “Bingo” as well. To avoid litigation, this seemed a small price to pay and hence the massive spread and popular interest in bingo.

Lowe became aware of the fundraising possibilities of bingo after he was approached by a parishioner who wanted to use the game to raise funds. However, there seemed to be a problem when he discovered that each game tended to produce at least a half a dozen winners. Lowe knew that in order for bingo to succeed and a larger scale he needed to develop a greater number of combinations for his cards. So he approached a mathematics professor at Columbia University by the name of Carl Leffler. Lowe wanted 6,000 new cards with different combinations. The professor agreed. What he may not have conceptualised was how much harder each card became to develop than the card before. The fee per card rose to $100 and the task was finally completed, much to Lowe’s delight and at a cost to the professor of his sanity! (Or so many people have speculated).

After that, bingo really began to take off. People started to approach Lowe in droves, asking him to help them develop bingo games. Newsletters and even a book were published. The stakes and prizes got higher and pretty soon bingo took its place in popular American culture along with sports and other forms of gambling and general entertainment.

Casino Craps - Easy to Learn and Easy to Win

Friday, December 15th, 2006

Craps is the fastest - and certainly the loudest - game in the casino. With the big, colorful table, chips flying everywhere and players yelling, it’s exiting to watch and exciting to play.

Craps also has the one of the lowest house edges against you of any casino game, but only if you make the right bets. In fact, with one type of bet (which you will soon learn) you play even with the house, meaning that the house has a zero edge. This is the only casino game where this is true.

THE TABLE LAYOUT

The craps table is slightly larger than a standard pool table, with a wood railing that goes around the outside edge. This railing acts as a backboard for the dice to be thrown against and is sponge-lined on the inside with random patterns so that the dice bounce randomly. Most table rails also have grooves on top where you can place your chips.

The table surface is a tight fitting green felt with designs to indicate all the various bets that can be made in craps. It’s very confusing for a beginner, but all you really need to concern yourself with right now is the “Pass Line” area and the “Don’t Pass” area. These are the only bets you will make in our basic strategy (and for the most part the only bets worth making, period).

BASIC GAME PLAY

Don’t let the confusing layout of the craps table intimidate you. The basic game itself is very simple. A new game with a new player (the person shooting the dice) begins when the current player “sevens out”, which means he rolls a seven. That ends his turn and a new player is given the dice.

The new player makes either a pass line bet or a don’t pass bet (explained below) and then throws the dice, which is called the “comeout roll”.

If that first roll is a 7 or 11, this is called “making a pass” and the “pass line” betters win and “don’t pass” betters lose. If a 2, 3 or 12 are rolled, this is called “craps” and pass line betters lose, while don’t pass line betters win. However, don’t pass line betters do not win if the “craps” number is a 12 in Las Vegas or a 2 in Reno and Tahoe. In this case, the bet is push - neither the player nor the house wins. All pass line and don’t pass line bets are paid even money.

Barring one of the three “craps” numbers from winning for don’t pass line bets is what gives the house it’s low edge of 1.4 percent on all line bets. The don’t pass bettor has a stand-off with the house when one of these barred numbers is rolled. Otherwise, the don’t pass bettor would have a small advantage over the house – something that no casino permits!

If a number other than 7, 11, 2, 3, or 12 is rolled on the comeout (in other words, a 4,5,6,8,9,10), that number is called a “place” number, or simply a number or a “point”. In this case, the shooter continues to roll until that place number is rolled again, which is called “making the point”, at which time pass line betters win and don’t pass bettors lose, or a 7 is rolled, which is called “sevening out”. In this case, pass line bettors lose and don’t pass bettors win. When a player sevens out, his turn is over and the whole process begins again with a new player.

Once a shooter rolls a place number (a 4.5.6.8.9.10), many different types of bets can be made on each subsequent roll of the dice, until he sevens out and his turn is over. However, they all have odds in favor of the house, many of them heavily in favor of the house, with the exception of two: odds on a line bet, and “come” bets. Of these two, we will only consider the odds on a line bet, as the “come” bet is a bit more confusing.

You should ignore all other bets, as they carry odds that are too high against you. Yes, this means that all those other players that are throwing chips all over the table with each roll of the dice and making “field bets” and “hard way” bets are really making sucker bets. They may know all the many bets and special lingo, but you will be the smarter gambler by simply making line bets and taking the odds.

Now let’s talk about line bets, taking the odds, and how to do it.

LINE BETS

To make a line bet, simply place your money on the area of the table that says “Pass Line”, or where it says “Don’t Pass”. These bets pay even money when they win, although it’s not true even odds because of the 1.4 percent house edge discussed earlier.

When you bet the pass line, it means you are betting that the shooter either makes a 7 or 11 on the comeout roll, or that he will roll one of the place numbers and then roll that number again (”make the point̶ ;) before sevening out (rolling a 7).

When you bet on the don’t pass line, you are betting that the shooter will roll either a 2 or a 3 on the comeout roll (or a 3 or 12 if in Reno and Tahoe), or will roll one of the place numbers and then seven out before rolling the place number again.

Odds on a Line Bet (or, simply called “odds bets̶ ;)
When a point has been established (a place number is rolled) on the comeout, you are permitted to take true odds against a 7 appearing before the point number is rolled again. This means you can bet an additional amount up to the amount of your line bet. This called an “odds” bet.

Your odds bet can be any amount up to the amount of your line bet, although many casinos will now allow you to make odds bets of two, three or even more times the amount of your line bet. This odds bet is paid at a rate equal to the odds of that point number being made before a 7 is rolled.

You make an odds bet by placing your bet directly behind your pass line bet. You notice that there is nothing on the table to indicate that you can place an odds bet, while there are indications loudly printed all over that table for the other “sucker” bets. This is because the casino does not want to encourage odds bets. You have to know that you can make one.

Here’s how these odds are computed. Since there are 6 ways that a number 7 can be rolled and 5 ways that a 6 or 8 can be rolled, the odds of a 6 or 8 being rolled before a 7 is rolled again are 6 to 5 against you. This means that if the point number is a 6 or 8, your odds bet will be paid off at the rate of 6 to 5. For every $10 you bet, you will win $12 (bets smaller or larger than $10 are of course paid at the same 6 to 5 ratio). The odds of a 5 or 9 being rolled before a 7 is rolled are 3 to 2, so you get paid $15 for every $10 bet. The odds of 4 or 10 being rolled first are 2 to 1, so you get paid $20 for every $10 you bet.

Note that these are true odds – you are paid exactly proportional to your chance of winning. This is the only true odds bet you will find in a casino, so be sure to make it whenever you play craps.

AN EASY TO LEARN BASIC CRAPS STRATEGY

Here’s an example of the three types of outcomes that result when a new shooter plays and how you should bet.

Assume new shooter is getting ready to make the comeout roll and you make a $10 bet (or whatever amount you want) on the pass line. The shooter rolls a 7 or 11 on the comeout. You win $10, the amount of your bet.

You bet $10 again on the pass line and the shooter makes a comeout roll again. This time a 3 is rolled (the player “craps out”). You lose your $10 pass line bet.

You bet another $10 and the shooter makes his third comeout roll (remember, each shooter continues to roll until he sevens out after making a point). This time a 4 is rolled – one of the place numbers or “points”. You now want to take an odds bet, so you place $10 directly behind your pass line bet to indicate you are taking the odds. The shooter continues to roll the dice until a 4 is rolled (the point is made), at which time you win $10 on your pass line bet, and $20 on your odds bet (remember, a 4 is paid at 2 to 1 odds), for a total win of $30. Take your chips off the table and get ready to bet again.

However, if a 7 is rolled before the point number (in this case, before the 4), you lose both your $10 pass line bet and your $10 odds bet.

And that’s all there is to it! You simply make you pass line bet, take odds if a point is rolled on the comeout, and then wait for either the point or a 7 to be rolled. Ignore all the other confusion and sucker bets. Your have the best bet in the casino and are playing wisely.

IMPORTANT NOTES ABOUT ODDS BETS

Odds bets can be made any time after a comeout point is rolled. You don’t have to make them right away . However, you’d be foolish not to make an odds bet as soon as possible considering it’s the best bet on the table. However, you are permitted to make, withdraw, or reinstate an odds bet anytime after the comeout and before a 7 is rolled.

When you win an odds bet, be sure to take your chips off the table. Otherwise, they are considered to be automatically “off” on the next comeout and will not count as another odds bet unless you specifically tell the dealer that you want them to be “working”. But in a fast moving and loud game, your request may not be heard, so it’s better to simply take your winnings off the table and bet again with the next comeout.

BEST PLACES TO PLAY CRAPS IN LAS VEGAS

Any of the downtown casinos. Minimum bets will be low (you can usually find $3) and, more importantly, they frequently allow up to 10X odds bets.

Good Luck!

Online Poker Tournaments – It’s a Marathon Not a Race

Thursday, December 14th, 2006

Since the first organized World Series Poker tournament in 1970, poker tournaments have become extremely popular. In the last few years, poker tournaments televised on major sports channels have attracted millions of viewers. The multi-million dollar tournaments that attract the leading poker players around the world have spawned hundreds of online poker tournaments of various sizes. Although the prize pools vary in size, the larger tournaments have prizes of more than one million dollars.

Although the winnings are great in most cases, there is a major difference between successful money players and successful tournament players. Tournament players cannot bide their time in the same way that a money player needs to. In a tournament, the player has to win all the chips on the table if they want to progress; they cannot afford to wait and bid their time. They must play with an aggressive edge.

One of the most important tournament skills is a strong psychological presence. It sounds odd and a little unnerving, but luck has a lot to do with tournament success in poker. To compensate for this, you need to try to make yourself as lucky as possible; think positive, don’t let your moods swing with the tilts. Be sensible but keep up the aggressive plays. In tournament poker, you need to get all the chips on the table in a certain amount of time, against the added pressure of increasing blinds. You can’t afford to let a run of bad luck hit you if you want to get anywhere in the tournament. You must do whatever you can to maintain a positive outlook.

As a general rule, you should play tight at the beginning of the tournament, when the blinds are low; this is the only time you can afford to sit and wait for other players to make mistakes. As the blinds rise – as they do in tournaments – you need to start gambling aggressively.

Controlling your tournament gambling should be the gap concept, introduced by David Sklanksy. The basic principle and practice of this concept is that you should open the betting whenever your hand makes it prudent. You can open the betting yourself with a marginal to semi-strong hand and it’s a lot easier to bet with yourself. However, if the betting has already been opened, if someone else makes a bet before you, then you must have a strong hand to call.

Table positions also come into play in tournament poker. You should play tight in the early positions and let the people playing after you take the lead most of the time (unless you have a hand that warrants aggressive play, such as high honors). As you move to later positions, particularly the end positions, you should look to bluff and play semi-strong hands.

Online distractions aren’t such a problem, but you can still get put off by some of the pop-ups and information bombardments. You shouldn’t worry about the other tables or the other players in the tournament. Your focus needs to remain on the table and chips you’re trying to accumulate.

Your focus in a tournament needs to be on your table, on your position, and on your opponents play. Good tournament players look to shift gears, alternating between tight and aggressive plays as the situation calls. Watch your opponents for sighs that they are following one or other of these strategies.

Follow the strategies yourself. Remember that survival is key to winning a tournament, more so than in money games. You can’t be eliminated from money games, per se, but you can and will be knocked out of tournaments for careless mistakes.

To win at tournament poker you need to train your brain to focus above and beyond money game play. In tournaments, how you behave towards your opponents, how you respond to your opponents on a psychological level, can have an impact on your game if you don’t check yourself. Some of the best advice from tournament champs is to play our own cards. Don’t think about anyone else’s cards and don’t try to analyze or critic the plays of anyone else. Never voice your opinion about anyone else’s plays, strategies, or styles. It’s never worth dwelling on someone else’s game except to understand them as an opponent.

And the last snippet of tournament-play advice: trust your instincts. Know the guidelines for poker play – for tournament and online tournament play specifically – but trust your instinct and feel for the cards. The leading tournament poker players play by feel much of the time. You should too if you want to win.

Poker will still maintain its popularity because of the interesting factors of the game, like psychology, bluffing, randomization (luck!) and even cheating has become a whole new job and skill for many poker fans, even if it’s illegal. The game will be around for a long time and we will keep enjoying it and getting better and better at it.
