Gambling in Monte Carlo

Sunday, January 21st, 2007

Along the French Riviera, the Principality of Monaco Houses the small city of Monte Carlo. The city clings to the shore of the Mediterranean in beautiful sprawls of secluded bays and the small port of Monte Carlo.

Casinos of Monte Carlo make for a large part of the place’s history. In the latter half of the 1800’s the first casino, Casino de Monte Carlo came up in the city. Napoleonic era style can be seen at the Casino de Monte Carlo, designed in the belle Époque style. Intention behind this magnificent casino was to please and dazzle the tastes of aristocratic Europeans. These people were the initial target audience for the design of the Monte Carlo’s gracious manner of living.

Similarly the Sun Casino built in 1975 is equally ravishing to any gambler with special fondness for American Gambling games.

The most contemporary casino in Monte Carlo is The Sporting. Built in 1990’s, the Sporting offers an amazing combination of the best of European casino games and popular american games in an ultra modern and ultra hip ambience.

If you are on a look out for some really exclusive casino games, Cafe de Paris is the place for you. Styled according to the influence of the Art Deco period of the 1930’s, it was originally called Cafe Diwan.

Various elegant and dignified games of chances soon came to be identified with the casinos of Monte Carlo. Games of Monte Carlo were majorly classical European games, such as Chermin de Fer, a European version of Baccarat, Punto Banco, a popular card game European Roulette, Trente et Quarante and Banque a deux Tableaux.

In the early nineteenth century, various casinos, in order to keep abreast with the world added slot machines to their list of gambling games. Today Monte Carlo is home to the most exclusive and state of the art slot machines in the world.

Hospitality in Monte Carlo is not limited to the glitzy casinos and utsidethem you can see the ultimate in accommodations, for eg the celebrated Hotel de Paris. It’s the second home to some of the most well known and well endowed individuals in terms of both fame and wealth.

Then there are the number of haute cuisine restaurants, located within the restaurants located within the hotels. World famous chefs are busy round the clock to prepare a variety of menu designed to tickle all palates.

The future of Monte Carlo was not an outcome of mere fate or destiny. It was well thought of and planned right through the 19th century.

Although today gambling has little to do with the local economy, but it was, at one point of time, the essential driver of the local economy, bringing in most of the business into the town. Casinos were designed here to appeal to the tourists who arrived here seeking luxury and elegance away from home.

Even today, Monaco is marketed by businesses as a tax haven and an investment destination, a wise place for foreigners to set up shop.

Although the gambling business is totally privatized and no major revenue is earned by the Principality, the results of the Gambling business still have an effect over the economy. Casinos attract wealthy tourists in hordes and it’s the money spent by these people that acts as a major driving force for the local economy. Monaco has also become the port of call for some of the large cruise lines.

Online Casinos Versus Playing Bingo

Friday, January 19th, 2007

Bingo is a very popular past time, especially with the older generation. Although bingo can be fun at times, most of the time its pretty boring, and the chances of winning are pretty small. Bingo is a game of luck because you have no say over the outcome of the results. You are given a sheet’s of paper with already assigned numbers, and all you can do is hope for the best. That doesn’t sound very good does it? What is a better alternative to hoping you are going to win playing bingo? Betting on online casinos! Here are three reasons why online casinos are more superior than the game of bingo.

Reason One - More Control Over The Outcome

Bingo is a game of luck. If you are not assigned the winning numbers when you buy your bingo sheet/s, you will not win. Online poker, for example, is the complete opposite. Online poker relies on skill, and some luck. If you are good enough, you will win a lot of the time playing online poker (just ask my friend Ben who won $1000 last night).

Reason Two - A Massive Welcome Bonus

I love the idea of getting a free five hundred dollar welcome bonus just for signing up with an online casino. How often does that happen when you show up to play bingo?

Reason Three - A Large Variety Of Entertaining Games

Bingo is a very repetitive, and sometimes, boring game. Want to have some fun? Most online casinos offer more games than you can poke a stick at! Roulette, slots, poker, and various other flashing games with entertaining sounds and colors.

If you are happy to play bingo, then I encourage you to keep playing it. However, if you are looking for a change, and looking to potentially win a lot more money, then I recommend giving online casinos a try. They are convenient, fun, fast, and very easy to use. Not only that, but you also have a lot more control over the outcome of your bets!

Online Gambling Basics

Thursday, January 18th, 2007

Poker, black jack or any other casino game with a real fancy name, any lay man acquainted with the web knows that these are only a click away. Online gambling industry today is one with the highest growth rate. However which site to choose is definitely the biggest problem that one faces when seriously thinking about gambling online. With sites by the dozen offering “online gambling” there are other hundred offering you to start your own site, the scene can get a lot confusing.

Though site offer all traditional card games like poker and black jack and other casino games like roulette and slot machines, but the roots of internet gambling still centre around sorts betting and horse racing.

The concept is quite sensible considering that not everyone is comfortable with the terms and other nitty gritty of various dice games, while the picking the scores of a super bowl game is relatively easier.

According to various stats as published in Sports Illustrated sports betting touched as much as 1 billion $ which is 10 times the figures placed with traditional Nevada sports books. Betting on horses is also hugely facilitated by theses sites as while all major races are broadcasted on major television channels and other programmes cover highlights of the races, but getting on the tracks can get difficult, if you do not live in a state where the tracks are located.

While the federal wire act1961 made it illegal to use telephone to place bets, thus driving the prospective gamblers from other states out of luck, however the arrival of internet on the horizon changed the scene.

Popularity gained by poker in the recent years has been another reason for the success of online gaming in the recent years. Te success of the Travel Channel’s World Poker Tour program and ESPN’s World Series of Poker, have pushed other channels also to start airing these shows.

Poker though may easily be the most successful online gamble game but sites are trying to popularise the real games like black jack and slots by vigorous advertising which includes bulk email advertising. The emails sent by Golden Palace.com, one virtual casino offers as much as 58 casino games, meanwhile offering chat rooms and other premium services.

Interestingly online betting is not the only way to spend money. There are industry sites such as the River City Group, based in Missouri open for subscription starting from$245.Those not ready to spend money right away there are fee software to be downloaded to play poker or other games. There also are free practise areas to learn and play for free. However the catch lies in the fact that success in these free areas are a sure invitation to the real gaming world, where however winning is not so easy. The odds might be against you but in the world of software tricksters it’s always easy to make a winning way out. So online gambling in fact a contest between the owner and the player. But in either case it’s the winner who gets it all.

Injuries Can Make or Break an NFL Team

Wednesday, January 17th, 2007

The teams that get to the Super Bowl each year usually have a little luck on their side throughout the season. One of the areas teams need to be lucky in is staying away from the injury bug. Many a season is lost before teams break training camp due to an injury of a star player. Here is a look at some of the high profile names battling the injury bug so far in camp.

Steve Smith, WR Carolina Panthers

Smith pulled a hamstring only a couple days into camp and the NFL’s leading receiver has not seen the field since. The injury is not considered serious but could potentially pose a problem if it does not completely heal. The Panthers will proceed cautiously as losing Smith for any length of time during the regular season could cost them a play-off spot.

Tedy Bruschi, LB New England Patriots

Bruschi recently had surgery to repair the broken wrist he suffered on 7/31. He will be out the entire preseason with hopes of being ready for Week 1 of the season. With Bruschi’s track record of recovery you can look for him in the starting lineup when the season kicks-off.

Clinton Portis, RB Washington Redskins

Portis partially dislocated his left shoulder in the Redskins first preseason game. Rehab will consist of rest and strengthening exercises and it would be a good bet that Portis will not see the field again in the preseason as the Redskins can ill afford the main clog in their offense to be out.

Cedric Benson, RB Chicago Bears

See Clinton Portis above. The only difference, other than that Benson hurt his shoulder in practice rather than a game, is that although the Bears are expecting Benson to carry a larger load than last season, he does not play the same significant role as Portis.

Todd Pinkston, WR Philadelphia Eagles

Pinkston has a sore Achilles and is out indefinitely. With T.O. gone Pinkston was expected to be the go to receiver for the Eagles. Receiver is considered a very thin position for the Eagles and if this injury keeps Pinkston out of games, Donavan McNabb might just be wishing he had T.O. back. Well….maybe not.

Ben Roethlisberger, QB Pittsburgh Steelers

The defending Super Bowl champions took a huge sigh of relief after Big Ben’s performance in their first exhibition game. He looked sharp and took a couple hits and reported no ill effects from the motorcycle accident he was involved in this summer.

Chad Pennington, QB N.Y. Jets

Pennington is coming off shoulder surgery and was far from spectacular in the Jets preseason opener. However, most importantly for himself and the Jets is that, other than general soreness, Pennington came out alright.

Ahman Green, RB Green Bay Packers

Green missed the majority of the 2005 season with a torn quadriceps but has been cleared to begin practice. Green’s return to health will be an important key to the Packers improving on their 4-12 record from a year ago as well as keeping the pass rush off Brett Favre.

Boys of Summer Warming Up

Tuesday, January 16th, 2007

The Winter Olympics may be a hot topic in most of the world, but in America, the Boys of Summer already are grabbing headlines as they frolic on base paths at warm-weather spring training locales in Florida and Arizona.

The big prize, of course, is the Fall Classic, captured last year by the Chicago White Sox, who won 100 regular-season games en route to their first World Series title in 88 years.

The Chisox also copped 11 of 12 post-season games while disposing of Boston, the Los Angeles Angels and, finally, Houston.

Clubs will report to training sites throughout the week, with the first spring games slated for March 1.

The regular season will begin April 2 with the White Sox hosting Cleveland, which almost caught them at the wire in last year’s American League Central Division race.

One sure sign that baseball is just around the corner is that 2006 season win totals began popping up on Las Vegas sports book boards over the weekend.

Futures have been posted since before the 2005 World Series became history.

“It’s like a blur,” said Hilton SuperBook oddsmaker Jeff Sherman. “One season just runs into the next.”

According to Hilton oddsmakers, no team will achieve the century mark in victories this year.

The New York Yankees, pegged for 97 1/2 wins, top the Majors.

“Actually, that’s a lower total than we’ve had on the Yankees in several years,” Sherman said.

“They may have weak spots pitching-wise, but their lineup always commands attention.”

St. Louis checks in at 93 1/2 wins, Boston at 92 1/2 and the White Sox at 92.

At the other end of the spectrum, Kansas City comes in at 63 1/2, Florida at 66 1/2, Tampa Bay at 69 and Colorado at 69 1/2.

Sherman says an “elasticity effect” comes into play when oddsmakers calculate season win totals from one year to the next.

“Teams that show great improvement one season are likely to win less the next,” he said.

“Teams that have a dramatic drop win more.”

Initially, Sherman notes, the SuperBook doesn’t expect the season over/unders to draw a lot of action.

“The bulk of it will come the week before the (regular) season starts,” he said.

Play at the Hilton is minus $1.15 both ways; other books, such as the Stratosphere, are dealing with a minus $1.10 line.

“We trying to stir up interest among the players,” Race and Sports Director Robert Jaynes said.

Effects of Banning Online Gambling

Monday, January 15th, 2007

Everyone talks about the negative impact of online gambling, but they are not talking about the negative impact of banning online gambling.

A reason for banning online casinos was to make sure that underage children were not using thee parents credit cards to gamble online, but besides the fact that most online casinos did everything possible to ensure to verify the age of the account holder before allowing any gambling to occur, but by banning it you are only stopping the law abiding casinos from taking bets and not the less reputable casinos. They will use third party account like PayPal or Click2pay which provide a loophole in the new law.

By banning an activity especially such a popular activity as online gambling all that can be expected to happen is for people to find ways around the law, such as the Speakeasies of the 1920’s.

A Speakeasy was a nightclub that served Alcohol during prohibition and was usually hidden in the back rooms of pet stores and innocent looking book stores. Every time a speakeasy was raided the next night another one was opened, and this is what will happen with these online casinos. If the government finds one operating in the USA and gets it shut down or manages to stop the money flowing to it then another will open.

By regulating online gambling the government would know exactly who was running the casino to make sure they were running it honestly and within all the laws, and it would help make sure that the criminal element did not get rich and gain power a second time in the history of the USA because of a bad lawmaking decision.

Another reason given for the ban of online gambling was to help protect against a rise in problem gamblers from have casino gaming in your home 24 hrs a day, but no proof has ever been found that shows that people who would normally not be inclined to go to a casino and gamble would decide to do it just because it was now in their homes through online casinos and poker rooms.

The facts actually show a steady rate of people with gambling problems and growing at the same rate it has been growing for over 25 years.

Many experts are now saying that there are some positives to the online gambling ban, but those positives would be even better if the industry was properly legalized and not, just by putting a mostly unenforceable law in place.

But this to be a pattern the government seems to always make, it is much like the war on drugs. Last time I checked thee was still a drug problem in this country even though drugs are illegal, yet in countries like Holland where the use of soft drugs like hash and grass are legal the number people with drug problems is much lower per capita then in the USA. This is because the money that is brought in the form of taxes from these sales goes to fund the public schools where they properly educate kids on the negative effects of these drugs, so most of the people who smoke are tourists and not the locals.

Maybe one day the government will learn from its past mistakes and make things right.

History of Bingo

Sunday, January 14th, 2007

A lot of people tie the roots of bingo to the lottery. The lottery is said to have officially begun in Italy. In 1530 Italy was unified and started the first state run lottery. The actual game was but a fledging of today’s bingo, but its popularity was tremendous and quickly spread to other nations.

The French lottery is the first lottery that people closely associate with today’s bingo game.

In the late 18th century (1778 has been given as a date) France’s upper class became enamored with their own version of the lottery. They would buy a card divided into 9 columns and 3 rows, an elongated version of today’s bingo card in which column 1 held numbers between 1 and 10, column 2 between 11 and 20 and so on. A person (bingo caller) would draw wooden discs numbered 1-90 out of a bag and announce the number. The first person to cover an entire row (a bingo) would win.

This new version of the lottery, now moving closer and closer to the bingo game, became an educational tool in Germany. Bingo’s predecessor was said to help children learn their time tables and spelling. It’s said that the bingo game we know was even altered to teach the children history.

The next step in bingos growth was a carnival game. The game was played in Germany and taken to American carnival tents with slight revisions, moving it closer to the bingo game we know today. Instead of filling a row vertically, a winning card could have a row diagonally or horizontally. ‘Beano,’ the newly named carnival game, had carnival goers going nuts trying to mark off the numbers called with beans. The winner would yell out BEANO when they had a completed line.

Edwin S. Lowe is said to be the true ‘inventor’ of the modern game of bingo. He was a traveling toy salesman from New York who saw Beano being played at a carnival in Atlanta, Georgia. He immediately recognized the games potential. Back in New York he organized what would become the first bingo game in his apartment with some friends. A woman grew so excited with the game that when she finally won she stumbled on the word Beano and stuttered out bingo instead. An excited Lowe had a new creation on his hands by accident.

Lowe started selling bingo cards in sets of 12 and 24 (one dollar and two dollar cost, respectively). Knowing that the game had originally come from public domain, Lowe knew he could not prevent imitators from selling their own form of bingo. All he asked was that anybody using the word bingo paid him a dollar a year. And the modern game of bingo was born.

Technology has brought us a long way since the first modern bingo game was played. Imagine the long hours that went into figuring out the thousands of possible combinations of letters and numbers on bingo cards. Now with computers this tedious work can be done in seconds. There are literally thousands of new variations on the original game. More people play bingo than ever before.

Bettor not Bankin’ on Bears

Saturday, January 13th, 2007

Chicago’s Bears are either the NFL’s best team, luckiest or both, but judge and jury still are out on oft-injured quarterback Rex Grossman and whether the Windy City’s reincarnated Monsters of the Midway can go 16-0.

Don Shula’s 1972 Miami squad achieved the last unblemished season in 1972.

The Bears’ amazing 24-23 comeback against Arizona before a national television audience two Monday nights ago evolved without a single offensive score or Grossman heroic.

Las Vegas bookmakers took quick note of how Chicago struggled to gain a 24-23 win and how the Bears never had a chance of covering 11 points, even after blowing out four of their previous five opponents.

Chicago opened the season by deep-freezing old rivals Green Bay and Detroit by a combined 60-7 score.

The hook got the Bears in a 19-16 triumph over Minnesota, though, a game in which they gave 3 1/2 points.

They then bumped off reigning NFC champ Seattle 37-6 and the AFC’s Buffalo 40-7 before running up against the Cardinals.

Chicago had its bye last week and returns to action Sunday at Soldier Field, where the Bears are laying 16 to San Francisco.

The Hilton altered numbers on its “Will/Won’t Chicago Go Undefeated for 16 Straight Games?” proposition from 10/1 to 16/1 on the “Yes” and 1/18 to 1/14 on the “No” after the Bears had to rally late to beat Arizona.

Odds this week were 12/1 and 1/16.

Veteran Las Vegas sports bettor Lem Banker would take the “No” — if he considered the numbers enticing enough.

“I think they’ll lose a game or two along the way,” Banker declared.

“The Bears are good, but I’m not that struck by Grossman,” declared Hilton oddsmaker and bet shop supervisor Jeff Sherman.

“His passes (against Arizona) weren’t even close.

“I don’t have the faith in him I do other (pro) quarterbacks.”

Sam’s Town Race and Sports Book manager Tony Paonessa never expected much from the former Florida signal caller, so he’s fairly impressed.

Grossman spent much of his first three pro seasons on the sidelines nursing injuries.

“He’s not a great quarterback, but he’s with the right team,” Paonessa said.

“The Bears have the right mix and gel well.

“As long as he doesn’t get hurt (again), he’s the guy now.”

Banker calls Grossman “a good quarterback.”

“Steve Spurrier (the Gators’ coach) called him the best he has been around,” Banker said.

“If he has problems, it’s that he’s short (6-foot-1) and he’s fragile.”

Paonessa believes the fact the Bears struggled against the Cardinals, yet won, only shows how good Chicago is.

“Really good teams have a game or two like that, where they win when they shouldn’t have,” he said.

A year ago, Vegas bet shops began zeroing in on whether or not Indianapolis would go unbeaten.

The Colts ended up losing during the regular season and being ousted early in the playoffs after Coach Tony Dungy’s son died just before Christmas.

Indy currently is the NFL’s only team besides Chicago to be undefeated after six games, but sports stores aren’t rushing to put up props on the Colts this season.

Sherman notes a quick glance at the schedule shows why.

Indianapolis’ path is cluttered, but the Bears have what’s frequently perceived as only a few obstacles in their way.

The Colts face high-flying, once-beaten Denver this week and meet the likes of New England, Dallas, Philadelphia and Cincinnati down the road.

Chicago’s major challenges figure to be the Pats and New York Giants.

The Bears also have a rematch with Minnesota, but close out against marshmallows Tampa Bay, Detroit and Green Bay, who are a combined 5-14 SU.

Banker cautions players to be wary of Chicago being upset each and every week, however.

“Anybody can beat ‘em,” Banker said.

“The (St. Louis) Rams. the New York teams — both the Giants and Jets — even Detroit.”

So You Have Won A Million Dollars, What Now?

Friday, January 12th, 2007

What would you do with a million dollars? It’s unlikely that you’ll have a problem spending the dosh, but that’s if you get it. Million dollar sweepstakes are held all over the world, but the problem is that some aren’t legitimate. It’s easy to get conned if you don’t know what to look for in a contest. Learn what you should really do and know if you get a call from a telemarketer that needs you to collect your prize. Be prepared for all the scams in a million dollar sweepstakes.

It goes like this when the call comes through from an employee of a supposed legitimate contest. You’ve not won the million, but you’re a runner up, and you need to collect your runner up prize in the contest. It’s easy to not remember what contests you’ve entered, unless your detailed orientated. Ask how the company got your name. If they can’t tell you, don’t talk with them. If the marketer says that you must act this second, know that it’s a ploy to get your money. A ideal sales person has a convincing tone’ and a million dollar sweepstakes and prizes is tempting.

Be wary too if anger becomes part of the telemarketers when you ask questions about what you’ve won and how to claim it. You’ll need to know everything regarding it, so ask for it in writing. You’ll find that often the phone will go silent when you request it in writing, or it could infuriate them to hound you to release bank’ credit card or savings account information. Con artists like this, use this tactic to get your money. Don’t ever give this information to them until you’re sure the million dollar sweepstakes is verifiable.

You might be interested to find out that there are restrictions on what type of overseas contests that you can enter. Almost all are prohibited to enter from the U.S. unless you are residing in that particular country. Also, there are state laws that are violated if you enter a million dollar sweepstakes, so don’t do it. You could be heavily fined, and jailed. No million dollar sweepstakes contest is worth having your name scarred for life.

If you do get scammed by these scoundrels, you need to report them to your local and state police. Tell the media too, and they can work with the police to warn others. Write to your governor’s legal department and state in a lot of detail what happened to you. They can investigate the million dollar sweepstakes, and get back to you. You might or might not get your money back from the million dollar sweepstakes, but at least you’ve learned a valuable lesson.
