How to Play Poker

Thursday, February 8th, 2007

Without question, Poker is the most common card game in Las Vegas and Internet casinos. Learning how to play Poker is essential for anyone looking to have fun and make some money at casinos. Once you learn the basics of how to play Poker, you can practice online and play for fun. The basic rules for most variations of Poker are the same, so learning how to play Poker will allow you to change your game and get more enjoyment from your play time. Many people learn how to play Poker by participating in home games, visiting internet casinos or watching live Poker tournaments like the World Series of Poker. A few basic rules will get you on your way.

The first step in learning how to play Poker is to memorize the hand ranking. The object of Poker in just about every variation is to form the highest possible five-card hand. From highest to lowest, the order of Poker hands is Royal Flush, Straight Flush, Four of a Kind, Full House, Flush, Straight, Three of a Kind, Two Pair, One Pair, and High Card. Before you figure out any other rules of how to play Poker, you should know the hand ranking off the top of your head so you can concentrate on the game.

There is more to learning how to play Poker than hand ranking. You should also familiarize yourself with the various types of Poker that are commonly played in casinos. Stud Poker, which is usually some variation of five-card or seven-card stud, is a Poker game where you try to make the best possible hands from the cards you are dealt. Variations of seven-card stud, such as Omaha and Texas Hold ‘Em, are more common than five-card stud because with seven cards, the game relies more on skill than luck.

Draw Poker is another type of game you should investigate in learning how to play Poker. Most casinos don’t offer draw Poker because the odds are excellent for players, but you can find draw Poker games in many for-credit Internet casinos. In draw Poker, depending on the game variation, you can discard a certain number of cards after the initial deal and get that many new cards to make the best possible hand.

Knowing how to play Poker will let you participate in the most exciting card game around. After you learn how to play Poker, you can work on your bluffing skills (actions you can use against live opponents to make them think your cards are better than theirs so they will fold, or withdraw from the game) and maybe even find yourself with a seat at the World Series of Poker. Practice your Poker skills online or with friends so you can learn all the tricks about how to play Poker.

Packers/Eagles MNF Preview

Tuesday, February 6th, 2007

Brett Favre on the Monday Night stage-I’m watching and playing Monday Night’s big matchup between the Packers and the Eagles. The Eagles come in as 11-point favorites as they try to light up the score board yet again this week. Brett Favre showed last week that he’s still got it throwing for 340 yards and three touchdowns. But more importantly, he didn’t throw an interception for the first time in 12 games.

There are three major questions to ask when looking at Monday night’s matchup. Was Green Bay’s offensive performance last week a fluke? How much better is Philadelphia than Detroit? And there is one more question that will come up later. First off, there is no fluke about Brett Favre. The guy is perhaps the NFL’s best competitor of all time, but at times his competitiveness is to a fault. That’s why he is so prone to throwing costly interceptions. He tries to make big plays for his team by forcing throws instead of taking what the defense is giving him. The Eagles offense is looking quite a bit better than Detroit’s to answer my second question, but their defenses are comparable. Philly gave up 24 points to the 49ers last week and 30 points to the Giants the week before. However, the Packers have been very good at giving up points as well. They are allowing their opponents to score an average of 28 points per game after the first three weeks and none of their opponents have had a Donovan McNabb at quarterback or a Brain Westbrook at tailback.

This leads us to the our final question which will give us our winning side. How much better is Philadelphia’s offense than the previous Packers opponents? If you can crack this egg, then you can capitalize of Monday night’s big game. Jimmy Boyd has looked at every angle of this game and I have uncovered Monday Night’s big winner. When you really go over the offensive and defensive matchups on a position by position level, the answer is clear. If you’re playing Monday Night Football this week, make sure you’re on board with Jimmy Boyd.

The 9/6 Jacks or Better Hand Guide

Monday, February 5th, 2007

Do you love video poker? It sure is popular. I must admit, I’ve played thousands of hours of Video Poker over the years. Once I worked at a casino where they allowed workers to gambling on any machine during breaks. So, I spent my breaks—including most lunches—hunched in front of a video poker machine.

But, what’s the point of playing if you don’t know what the hands are? Most machines tell you what hands pay, but they stop just short of telling you what makes up a hand—something many new players are confused with. Here’s a quick rundown of all the possible paying hands for a 9/6 Jacks or Better machine.

Jacks or Better: When you have two Jacks, Queens, Kings or Aces. It pays your money back.

Two Pair: Having two cards on one rank and two cards of another rank—such as two 6’s and two Kings.

Three of a Kind: Three cards of one rank.

Straight: Having five cards in sequential order, such as a 2,3,4,5 and 6. An Ace can be used before the 2 or after the King.

Flush: Having five cards all of the same suit, such as five clubs.

Full House: Having three cards of one suit and two cards of another suit, like three Kings and two Queens.

Four of a Kind: Having four cards of one rank, such as four Jacks.

Straight Flush: Having all five cards of the same suit and in sequential order, such as the 3,4,5,6 and 7 of diamonds.

Royal Flush: This is the big payday. I’ve been lucky enough to hit some. You have a royal flush when all five cards are the same suit and the 10, Jack, Queen, King and Ace.

One tip before I go. Always play maximum coins. That’s the only way the jackpot for a royal flush opens up. When I first started gambling I hit a royal flush with just one coin in the machine and receiving just over $60 when it could have been $1,000 really hurts.

Tips for Slot Machines Players

Saturday, February 3rd, 2007

Make sure that the Slot Machine that you are planning to use is not taken because sometimes slot machine players play in more than one slot machine at a time. While you are playing if you decide to go to the restroom you can ask an attendant and usually they stay until you come back if not they’ll place a Reserved sign on the machine. Have in mind that if the attendant stay while you go to the restroom to tip him/her or say thanks when you come back. If you can’t find anyone to reserve your slot machine while you go to the restroom, is not safe to leave any personal belongs to reserve the machine.

While you are playing try not to drink too much because alcohol can affect your personal judgment. There’s nothing wrong with having some alcoholic beverages while you are playing but its better to wait after playing time to celebrate.

If you are one of those people that don’t believe in slot clubs you will be surprise all the free stuff you can get while you use your slot club card. For you to be able to get any free stuff like; free lunch, free room or free dinner you know that you have to play the machines and why not using the slot club card (its free).

More tips for you:

Don’t play a machine that is not giving you money, if after 8 spins the machine hasn’t paid out then look for another machine.

Don’t leave a machine that is giving you money, don’t leave a machine while is giving you money. Wait until the slot machine is not giving you money after couple tries to find another slot machine.

Don’t forget to use your slot club card, if you don’t use the card while you are playing you wont get the free stuff that they have to offer you.

Don’t forget to get your money, make sure you cash out before you leave the machine and also make sure after you cash out that the machine shows that there is not coins left.

#2 Ohio St. Buckeyes Preview

Friday, February 2nd, 2007

Fall camps are under way and the regular season will be here soon so that means getting an early jump on the 2006 NCAA football season. Knowing the teams now will save you time and Matt Fargo is here to help you get a grasp of what to expect this upcoming year. We go from worst to first in this 2006 College Football Preview.

#2 – Ohio St. Buckeyes 10-2 SU; 9-3 ATS

Fargo’s Take The Buckeyes are the top ranked team in both the AP and USA Today preseason polls following a fantastic finish last season. They got the nod over Notre Dame likely due to their 14-point win in the Fiesta Bowl last season, which was Ohio St.’s seventh consecutive win to end the season. The offense finished 26th in scoring and 32nd overall but it really got things going toward the end of the season. The Buckeyes scored 34 or more points in six of those final seven games after surpassing that total just once in their first five games. However, it was the defense that was really stout, finishing 5th in both scoring and overall defense. While the offense brings back the majority of players, the defense needs to reload in a hurry. They bring back only two players to the stop unit but there is still a lot of experience that will be filling those spots. Ohio St. has won 15 of its last 18 games going back to the end of 2004 with those three losses coming by a touchdown or less. Getting by the tough games early could mean another undefeated season similar to 2002 and another National Championship.

Returning Starters on Offense – 7 Led by quarterback Troy Smith, the offense improved from 98th in total offense in 2004 to 32nd last year and a finish in the top 10 is likely this season. Smith completed over 62 percent of his passes last season with 16 touchdowns and just four interceptions. It isn’t just him however. With receiver Santonio Holmes off to the NFL, electrifying Ted Ginn Jr. will take over as the number one guy outside. He is also one of the best return men in the country. His counterpart is up and coming Anthony Gonzalez who is actually faster than Ginn and is ready for a breakout season. However, the rushing game will be the strength again this year after finishing 24th in the country a season ago. Smith and tailback Antonio Pittman combined for 1,942 yards on the ground while Pittman put up a 5.5 ypc average. Running behind one of the best offensive lines in the Big Ten doesn’t hurt things. The line averages 315 pounds and will pave the way for another successful ground game.

Returning Starters on Defense – 2 This is where many feel that the Buckeyes are going to struggle this season since nine players are gone including six players that were taken in the first four rounds of the NFL draft. There are definitely going to be some learning curves with the new players especially since six of the new starters are just sophomores. Replacing the best linebacking unit in the country will be the most difficult challenge but Marcus Freeman and John Kerr do bring in excellent speed and athleticism. The defensive line will be the strength to start the season as the two returning starters are tackles David Patterson and Quinn Pitcock. The front seven put together the top ranked rushing defense in the country last season, allowing just 73.4 ypg and 2.2 ypc. The secondary also needs to start from scratch and that is where three of the sophomores will line up. Cornerback Malcolm Jenkins is the leading returning tackler and is a solid shutdown corner.

Schedule The road back to the Fiesta Bowl will be difficult but it is not impossible. The season starts with a tough home game against Northern Illinois, a team that the Buckeyes cannot look past. On deck is the rematch with Texas, a game that Ohio St. lost at home in the final seconds last season. Two wins against Cincinnati and Bowling Green round out the non-conference slate. The Big Ten schedule gets underway with another revenge game, this one at home against Penn St. A tough trip to Iowa follows that but then it should be five straight wins in the conference. The most difficult game in that stretch will be against an improved Michigan St. team on the road. Following back-to-back road games at Illinois and Northwestern, Ohio St. hosts Michigan in its annual showdown. In total there are just six teams on the slate that went to a bowl game last year.

You can bet on… While the defense carried the Buckeyes early on in 2005, it will be just the opposite this year. Ohio St. has averaged 31.2 ppg over its last 18 games when the offense started to click and it should be even more explosive this season. Smith and Ginn Jr. are both Heisman candidates and having two such players is a luxury that most teams don’t and will never possess. The Buckeyes will be laying a lot of heavy points this season and even with the potentially potent offensive attack, that might not help. Ohio St. is just 5-10 ATS in its last 15 games when laying three touchdowns or more. That is the identical record against the number since 2002 when laying points on the road. Coming in with such high expectations, expect the Buckeyes to be overvalued in many spots in 2006.

Online Poker Strategy: How to Play Straight Draws

Thursday, February 1st, 2007

Most players know the fact that they have to be aware of the odds or the game when it comes to draws. You have surely had opponents that many times exaggerate the way they are plating their draw hands. If you consider yourself to be like that, then you should examine more draws. For example let’s consider a draw of the straight type. There a two kinds of straight. First there is the inside straight or otherwise called the gunshot draw. This is a straight that has cards in it starting a little over the beginning of the suite and ending a little earlier its ending. And then there is the open-ended straight draw. As the name says, this draw either starts at the beginning of a suite, or ends at the end of a suite. Both of them are dangerous and knowing the odds if just an element that will help you deal with them.

The gunshot draw is often played wrongly. So many players run after a gunshot draw right after the flop because they think the odds are in their favor, but they should know that the odds to get this draw are about 5-1 against them until the river. If these players miss a turn, they will fold knowing the chances just lowered themselves to about 11-1 against their purpose. If only they would take a moment to think it through from the beginning they would have realized then that the overall odds were since then about 11-1 against them, so there was no point in betting on the flop. But they do it all the time, thinking they are doing the absolute right thing. And they sometimes win and is proves them they are right.

These are the players you should want to play against, because you would stand a big winning chance. But, if somehow the odds are bigger than 11-1 in the beginning, then just ignore this advice and go for it because you might just make it and win a lot.

If however the odds tell you to stop, then stop. Set a limit to this draws that make you only lose money online. Unless you have good reasons, stop chasing them. Some good reasons would be: knowing the cards of the opponent – which is impossible - , having bigger cards that all the cards in the flop, having a pair that is bigger that all the cards in the flop.

These hands are very dangerous most of the times. The best thing to do is to throw them and have no regrets while doing this.
