Playing Smart Poker: Control Those Emotions

Wednesday, June 20th, 2007

Let’s take a look at something that is important in poker: emotions. You are off the hood this time, but still read and be aware if you ever need this advice.

As it is well known the one most important thing in poker is to pay attention to you game. Perfect poker players are always aware of their opponents emotions and they know how to read them.

Every card dealt, every bet, every look tells a lot about that player and his cards if you know how to look at him. You must watch your opponent as he bets and remember how much he bets, what are his words when he bets. Every little gesture like a breath, a smile can tell every thing about the cards he is holding. For example, a player that has good cards is more likely to speak very little, to watch everyone closely and check often.

The part that betrays the most are the eyes. If you can’t trust your eyes, then you could always turn to the pros solution, wear glasses. In order not to create any suspicions you need to be confident in your eyes and face expression. The best solution seems to be making up a problem you have to think about, or thinking about a real problem that you have although the game. If you are looking straight into someone’s eye in real life it means you are confident, but in poker you might have to deal with a partner that is experienced and your guess could be wrong. You can always try to make a conversation and look into his eyes, seeing if he responds to that. People usually avoid looking into your eyes if they know they have something going on.

If you ever find yourself in a real poker room and you have an incredible hand, you can get restless and your hands might start shaking. You should avoid talking or if you do, control your voice because the voice will tend to use a higher tone. Try to speak as calm as possible the whole game, so they can’t tell what you’re holding.

This is not a rule however. Some players try to act the opposite in every situation to create confusion. They will be calm when holding a good hand and restless when having bad cards.

Facial expression can be a thing that can also betray. Poker players always try to wear a hat or to look down at all times so the others can’t guess their hands. Beginners might show some sadness when the cards are bad and a little joy when the hand is good.

The most secure thing to do not to become the slave of emotions may they be joy or anger, especially if they are fear. You should stay calm and try to tell the emotions of others using use their feelings for your game.

Sports Book: A Popular Obsession

Tuesday, June 19th, 2007

For centuries sports have always played a large role in people’s lives. They have provided entertainment and an escape; a fun and competitive way to connect with fellow fans. With the birth of the internet, sports have also played a large role in the industry. Recently sports books, a place for all sports addicts to place bets on games, have been popping up everywhere.

Sports books have been appearing online since the birth of the first online casino in 1995. Although professional gamblers and amateurs cannot see each other physically, they all thrive on the numerous bets taken online. This is much more affordable and easy to access, especially since they can be a part of dozens of bets within seconds. Usually the most popular sports book deals with popular sports, including NFL football betting.

For beginners, it can be a confusing place since there are hundreds of different sports books on the internet. It also difficult when there are hundreds of scams, full of liars who only want your money. Surprisingly, many popular sites refer users to certain gambling centers not because they love it, but because they actually get money for referrals. Therefore, you need to take this into consideration when trying to find a safe place to bet. Fortunately, there are many different ways to find a legit and popular service.

For instance, using trial programs from different services is the best way to find your favorite professional gambling center. A legit site will usually allow you to try their services for a day or even an hour, which will let you figure out what is going on within the site. After all, without getting into the gambling circuit, you will not know if it is the right one for you. It is also important to look at the way your money is withdrawn or received. Many people prefer certain options, therefore limiting the companies they can play with.

No matter what you do, it is important to know what you are getting yourself into. For example, if you are a huge NFL fan and are interested in professional NFL football betting, you need to make sure you know a lot about the team. By doing research, you will also increase your chances of making some money. Also, it is smart to create a budget for your betting. Without having a limit, chances are you will probably end up spending way more than you bargained for. In any case, it is an addicting hobby that may result in debt if you are not careful.

While professional gambling is steadily becoming a common hobby, one must also know that online gambling could be illegal in your state. Unfortunately, these online betting havens also have a hard time with the government. There are even particular states that find online gambling highly illegal. Many of these companies actually operate outside of the United States for this very reason. Nonetheless, it will always be a highly competitive hobby that not only earns gamblers money, but also provides safe entertainment.

The Legality of Online Poker

Monday, June 18th, 2007

The topic of whether online poker is legal or illegal is frankly quite interesting. Typically, gambling is managed by each individual state, and as a result some states have legalized gambling and casinos and others do not. However, the internet is not something that can be managed by each state because it is global, there are no controls so to speak by individual countries, states, or governments on the Internet because it is like another world. But, back to the legality of poker online, a question that has no answer or many answers depending on how you look at it. There is no precedent set for gambling online, as a result there is no way to say that gambling online is legal, illegal, or none of the above. In fact, you could answer yes, no, or maybe, and be just as right with any of these answers. The Wire Act is one issues people say that makes gambling online illegal because it bans gambling by phone, however there is no precedent set that makes this statement valid regarding Internet gambling. As a result, while there are plenty of ways to infer gambling online is illegal, there is no way to prove so until a precedent is set. Setting a legal precedent requires someone being charged with playing online poker and then being found guilty. As of yet, not one single American soul out of the millions who play online poker each and every day has ever been charged, fined, or convicted of this act.

You might find this information not very helpful because your question is whether or not you can safely play poker online and not worry about breaking the law or being subjected to prosecution or fines of any type. Well, there is no outright answer, which favors playing poker online because there is nothing saying you absolutely cannot play poker online. Even if your state does not have legalized gambling or casinos, you can still play poker online and not worry about the authorities catching you and giving you a ticket. At the moment in time, finding all the online poker players, and fining them is not the main goal of states, and until there is some definitive statement regarding online poker you should play your heart away. Additionally, the fact that no legal precedent exists regarding online poker means you really have nothing to worry about.

However, if you are really concerned about the legality, or illegality, of playing poker online you should play and keep your ear out for any new information on the subject, or else avoid the game altogether because if you are so worried about the legality of online poker you won’t really be able to enjoy playing the game.

Online Poker Beginnings Poker and gambling has been popular for years, however many states have outlawed the activity relegating die hard fans to travel to the likes of Las Vegas, Atlantic City, or even the Cherokee Reservation in North Carolina to play their beloved game. However, not everyone can afford to travel to one of these destinations to play poker, nor do individuals have the time to do so on a regular basis. So, what was the average person who loved poker supposed to do if his buddies couldn’t play one Saturday night? Before online poker there were few options, now, no matter where you live you can play poker online to your hearts desire. You can play at night, in the morning, while eating lunch, or working as well. Online poker allows you to play your favorite game whenever and wherever you like!

At first, people thought this was an amazing idea, but they were also very cautious as well because the Internet was new, there was little understanding on how one could actually win money in an online poker game and then receive the money, there was mistrust, and simply confusion. But, the poker websites started offering security measures, large bonuses, and benefits for online players and little by little individuals started playing poker online.

The first players of online poker shared their success stories with friends and family members, as well as boasting about the security measures and the safety of playing online. This word of mouth advertising in addition to the advertising by the online poker sites really attracted new players and now in just a few short years online poker sites are some of the most popular sites on the web and there are people who play online poker every single day. If you had asked poker players 20 years ago what they thought of playing poker at home on a computer rather than in the casino you probably would have gotten some really strange looks and resounding negative responses. However, the age of the Internet has changed people and whether it is shopping, paying bills, or playing poker online the Internet is making everything easier and more accessible to the masses. Before, poker was a game of the wealthy who had the money to spend on a long vacation to a poker hot spot. Now, poker is a game of the every day man or woman that enjoys a hand of poker, but has neither the time nor the money to travel all over the country to play.

This huge growth in online poker is what has so many people worried about the legality of it and whether or not laws will be passed to regulate online pokers sites. While the future is unknown regarding online poker sites and whether they will be considered legal, illegal, or just another website remains to be seen, but until then simply log on to your favorite online gambling website and play to your hearts desire.

Texas Holdem Poker Tournament Strategy - Starting Hands

Sunday, June 17th, 2007

Welcome to the fifth in my Texas Holdem Poker Strategy Series, focusing on no limit Texas Holdem poker tournament play and associated strategies. In this article, we’ll examine starting hand decisions.

It may seem obvious, but deciding which starting hands to play, and which ones to skip playing, is one of the most important Texas Holdem poker decisions you’ll make. Deciding which starting hands to play begins by accounting for several factors:

* Starting Hand “groups” (Sklansky made some good suggestions in his classic “Theory of Poker” book by David Sklansky)

* Your table position

* Number of players at the table

* Chip position

Sklansky originally proposed some Texas Holdem poker starting hand groups, which turned out to be very useful as general guidelines. Below you’ll find a “modified” (enhanced) version of the Sklansky starting hands table. I adapted the original Sklansky tables, which were “too tight” and rigid for my liking, into a more playable approach that are used in the Poker Sidekick poker odds calculator. Here’s the key to these starting hands:

Groups 1 to 8: These are essentially the same scale as Sklansky originally proposed, although some hands have been shifted around to improve playability and there is no group 9.

Group 30: These are now “questionable” hands, hands that should be played rarely, but can be reasonably played occasionally in order to mix things up and keep your opponents off balance. Loose players will play these a bit more often, tight players will rarely play them, experienced players will open with them only occasionally and randomly.

The table below is the exact set of starting hands that Poker Sidekick uses when it calculates starting poker hands. If you use Poker Sidekick, it will tell you which group each starting hand is in (if you can’t remember them), along with estimating the “relative strength” of each starting hand. You can just print this article and use it as a starting hand reference.

Group 1: AA, KK, AKs

Group 2: QQ, JJ, AK, AQs, AJs, KQs

Group 3: TT, AQ, ATs, KJs, QJs, JTs

Group 4: 99, 88, AJ, AT, KQ, KTs, QTs, J9s, T9s, 98s

Group 5: 77, 66, A9s, A5s-A2s, K9s, KJ, KT, QJ, QT, Q9s, JT, QJ, T8s, 97s, 87s, 76s, 65s

Group 6: 55, 44, 33, 22, K9, J9, 86s

Group 7: T9, 98, 85s

Group 8: Q9, J8, T8, 87, 76, 65

Group 30: A9s-A6s, A8-A2, K8-K2, K8-K2s, J8s, J7s, T7, 96s, 75s, 74s, 64s, 54s, 53s, 43s, 42s, 32s, 32

All other hands not shown (virtually unplayable).

So, those are the enhanced Sklasky Texas Holdem poker starting hand tables.

The later your position at the table (dealer is latest position, small blind is earliest), the more starting hands you should play. If you’re on the dealer button, with a full table, play groups 1 thru 6. If you’re in middle position, reduce play to groups 1 thru 3 (tight) and 4 (loose). In early position, reduce play to groups 1 (tight) or 1 thru 2 (loose). Of course, in the big blind, you get what you get.

As the number of players drops into the 5 to 7 range, I recommend tightening up overall and playing far fewer, premium hands from the better positions (groups 1 - 2). This is a great time to forget about chasing flush and straight draws, which puts you at risk and wastes chips.

As the number of players drops to 4, it’s time to open up and play far more hands (groups 1 - 5), but carefully. At this stage, you’re close to being in the money in a Texas Holdem poker tournament, so be extra careful. I’ll often just protect my blinds, steal occasionally, and try to let the smaller stacks get blinded or knocked out (putting me into the money). If I’m one of the small stacks, well, then I’m forced to pick the best hand I can get and go all-in and hope to double-up.

When the play is down to 3, it’s time to avoid engaging with big stacks and hang on to see if we can land 2nd place, heads-up. I tend to tighten up a bit here, playing very similar to when there’s just 3 players (avoiding confrontation unless I’m holding a pair or an Ace or a King, if possible).

Once you’re heads-up, well, that’s a topic for a completely different article, but in general, it’s time to become extraordinarily aggressive, raise a lot, and become “pushy”.

In tournaments, it’s always important to keep track of your chips stack size relative to the blinds and everyone else’s stacks. If you’re short on chips, then play far fewer hands (tigher), and when you do get a good hand, extract as many chips as you can with it. If you’re the big stack, well, you should avoid unnecessary confrontation, but use your big stack position to push everyone around and steal blinds occasionally as well - without risking too many chips in the process (the other players will be trying to use you to double-up, so be careful).

Well, that’s a quick overview of an improved set of starting hands and some general rules for adjusting starting hand play based upon game conditions throughout the tournament.

Until next time, best of luck to you at the Texas Holdem poker tables!

Fourth Quarter Comebacks Pay Added Dividends

Saturday, June 16th, 2007

Good handicappers put a circle around a team every time they have an exciting fourth quarter comeback. One betting angle that’s worth playing attention to is how a team performs the week after a fourth-quarter comeback. Often times the team’s excitement carries over the following week, especially if that team is in the race for a playoff spot or a division title. Simply put, it appears that the good karma carries over at least one week helping that team.

We saw this a few weeks ago when the Chargers came from way back to shock the Bengals, 49-41. The next week the Chargers traveled to one of the most difficult venues at Denver in a key AFC West game. There was no let down, which some might have expected, as the underdog Chargers won straight up with another solid offensive performance.

A few seasons ago there was a three-year trend where teams went 21-6 against the spread the week after coming from 7 points or more down in the fourth quarter to win. It’s going to be interesting to watch the Tennessee Titans this weekend against Indianapolis. They are a big home dog, but come off of one of the most exciting fourth quarter comebacks in years, overcoming a 21-0 deficit to stun the Giants, 24-21.

Three weeks ago the Ravens came from 9 points down in the fourth quarter to beat Tennessee 27-26 as QB Steve McNair threw for 373 yards. The next week the Ravens had no let down, spanking Atlanta 24-10, an easy win and cover. Earlier this season Vikings rallied from a 17-3 fourth-quarter deficit to beat Lions with a 23-0 fourth quarter. The next game the Vikings stomped Seattle 31-13 as a 6-point road dog.

Big late rallies appear to add a jolt to a team that often carries over the next game. There has been a lot of talk this week reminiscing about the Tennessee Titans Music City Miracle of 1999, when they stunned the Bills on a last second miracle TD on a kickoff return in the playoffs. Some may forget that there was no emotional let down, as the next week the Titans were a road dog at Indy and won 19-16. The point is the momentum and confidence gained from a comeback appeared to be a contributing element in the team’s performance the next week.

The 2001 Chicago Bears might be the poster child for this angle, as they had a remarkable season with several wild comebacks. They fit this angle in consecutive weeks and got a split. The Bears trailed 28-16 at home going into the fourth quarter against San Francisco before pulling out a 37-31 win in overtime. The next week Chicago got the cover in an incredible comeback against Cleveland, rallying from a 21-7 deficit late before getting the win (and cover) on Mike Brown’s 16-yard interception return in overtime.

The Bears finally ran out of gas the next week, losing 20-12 to Green Bay as a +3 home dog. Still, dramatic comebacks can provide a team with confidence and fire that can carry over to the next game. That can provide a bettor with excellent wagering opportunities, which the Titans will test Sunday!

Roulette Strategy

Friday, June 15th, 2007

If there is one common psychological feature to be found among virtually all successful roulette players, it is determination. While you’re apt to find this very same trait in successful gamblers of just about any casino variety, I think it is much more of a the bedrock fundamental in the mind of a roulette player. There is just something about this game which requires a steely reserve and an unwavering commitment to beat the house no matter what it takes.

When you look at the basic structure of roulette, it is not so surprising that determination is a requirement for a committed player. After all, any roulette gambler worth his or her salt knows that the odds of emerging victorious are not on their side. It is this very understanding that prevents a number of highly skilled but somewhat risk averse players from ever getting seriously involved with the roulette wheel. Gamblers of this nature are much more comfortable seated around a poker table, where the illusion of control can be maintained at a much higher and more consistent degree. Let’s face it, when you stand there watching that little white ball skip around the spinning wheel, it is pretty hard to convince yourself that you have any control whatsoever over the outcome.

And yet there is a critical distinction between the intelligent roulette player who is fully away of the short odds and the player who is simply betting on blind intuition without any proper understanding but the game’s structure and logic. These folks do not seem to be too concerned with the house edge, if they even understand the concept at all. But for the more skilled players, the house edge is both the bane of their existence and in the ultimate magnet of their focus.

There is a common misconception among many people attempting to crack the secret code of the roulette wheel that the green numbers are “house numbers”. This theory indicates that by betting on only green, a player will gain the house edge. In fact, it is true that the house’s advantage comes from the existence of the green numbers because a game without them would be statistically fair. Yet you should not get your hopes up too much on this front, because there is a sad truth here that cannot be denied: the greens are no more or less likely to come up than any other number.

Internet Poker Gambling

Friday, June 15th, 2007

One of the most popular activities these days is poker. You can find it on TV, in video and handheld games, and even in local tournaments at various community centers. If you’ve been thinking that you would like to learn the game, but are a little fearful of the tough competition in a live game or tournament, why not try internet poker gambling?

Most internet poker gambling sites are very welcoming to those just learning the game. With a variety of tools and play options, beginners can get comfortable with their poker game before risking any money placing a bet. These safe and secure sites prohibit cheating and protect players’ money with advanced security features.

Internet poker gambling gives you all the advantages and fun of the game and allows you to learn the basics without risking loads of money. There are tables available with very low buy ins or even some places that you can play with virtual money. This gives you a chance to figure out just how internet poker gambling works and perfect your skills before moving on to high risk games and tournaments.

Some internet poker gambling sites even have special tutorial sites that can help teach the game of poker to new players. These sites allow you to choose which games you would like to get a better understanding of. You can learn any game imaginable, from Stud games to Texas Hold ‘Em. Compare a few different sites to check the different features each has available for new players.

Bet on the Final 4

Thursday, June 14th, 2007

When it comes to NCAA basketball and March Madness the magic number is definitely 4. The 4 teams that survive the grueling tournament to make the semi-finals are considered the best of the best and for sports bettors it’s always fun to bet on the final 4. It may begin with a long shot bet on which teams will make it to the final 4 and then end with a bet on each of the semi final games and the final. However, to bet on the final 4 and have a chance of success you need to know all there is to know about the teams.

This information is probably not going to be available in your morning newspaper. Sure, you can find out the team records and the stats on individual players, but what about how a team matches up against a team it may never have played before? How do you find out that information? Well before you bet on the final 4 find a good sportsbook where you can place your bets and get the best odds available. You can also bet on the final 4 by using the recommendations of the top experts that work for an online sportsbook. These experts know which teams are hot and which are not.

They also know if there are injuries to key players that might affect the game and how individual players match up against each other. You can also bet on the final 4 with an analysis of the betting lines. If a team wins often, but only occasionally beats the point spread, it’s probably not a good bet, even if it’s in the final 4. So get the inside scope and place your bets.

Let’s Hope Marbury’s $15.00 Shoe is Winner!

Wednesday, June 13th, 2007

Today is the official unveiling of the Starbury, an athletic sneaker that will be offered throughout America at all Steve and Barry’s. The Starbury is the brainchild of New York Knicks guard Stephon Marbury, who has been anything but a bargain in his last 5 years with the Suns and Knicks.

I must be honest with you, I’ve visited Steve and Barry’s several times in Buffalo and find the place outstanding if you are looking for a gift for a relative or a friend. The place is lined wall to wall with every t-shirt and sweat shirt from every major university in the country. The cost of the sweatshirt is $7.99 and the quality of the shirt is as good as Roots or Nike.

Now, I know many people live by the motto that you get what you pay for, but if that was the case how would Marbury’s employers feel the past several years? I mean, Larry Brown has pretty well won at every level he has coached and certainly gotten the most out of his players, yet when coupled with Stephon he failed miserably.

I have nothing against an athlete that commands a huge salary in this day and age of overpriced athletes as no one is holding a gun to the owner’s head. However, what does tick me off is how a player like Marbury can stand to look himself in the mirror after every game when he knows he has underachieved. Makes you wonder if this guy’s involved in sports betting, eh?

One only has to look towards Steve Nash, who replaced the Starbury, for a guy who earns every single penny and then some every time he steps on the court for the Phoenix Suns. The problem in America today is that our youth is caught up in the trendy brand names like Abercrombie and Nike and feel that the only way to be hip is to walk around in a pair of $150 shoes.

If your kid has a choice between walking into Steve and Barry’s for the $15.00 shoe or Dick’s Sporting Goods for the $149.99 Lebron James shoe, what do you think he’d pick?

You’d better reach for that credit card or start laying some heavy sports betting cash and hope you win.

The Housewife’s Favourite Game

Tuesday, June 12th, 2007

Playing blackjack online is becoming the favourite pastime of housewives everywhere. Why is blackjack becoming so extremely popular? Well, gambling online allows housewives to play their favourite game right from the comfort of their own homes without the need to travel or endure the chaotic scene that brick and mortar casinos possess. Plus, there is no need to get all dressed up to engage in online gambling and there are no worries that a man might hassle you when all you want to do is enjoy the game. If you are more interested in gambling than you are in the dating scene, then gambling online might be just the kind of pastime for you. It’s also fantastic fun!

Cara Thurston, a housewife fond of online gaming entertainment, explains why she loves online gambling : “When I gamble online I have the freedom to do what I want to do and I don’t have other players judging me because I am a woman. When I play online blackjack, my identity remains anonymous for the most part and I can just enjoy the game.”

Gambling online provides housewives like Cara the opportunity to spend their leisure time the way they want to—relaxing and enjoying a challenging game of blackjack or any of the other games offered at online casinos.

When gambling online you will find that you can either play the game of your choice for free or you can play for real money and prizes. Of course, where you choose to gamble online will determine whether or not cash and prizes are offered. There are many websites offering free gambling but if you want to get in on real money action you will need to visit one or more online casinos to begin playing for real money.

Typically, when gambling online for real money, you will find that you will be required to become a registered member at the online casino of your choosing. However, what is particularly nice about becoming a member at an online casino is that you will be offered signup bonuses for becoming a member. Signup bonuses are a percentage of the initial deposit you place in an account when you first signup at an online casino to begin gambling for money. Such a bonus can be used to place wagers on blackjack, poker, roulette and more.

Many online casinos offer you, as a new member, the opportunity to play several blackjack variants. Blackjack variants include Vegas Strip Blackjack, Atlantic City Blackjack, Multi-Hand Atlantic City Blackjack, European Blackjack, Spanish Blackjack, Triple 7’s Blackjack, Bonus Blackjack, as well as others. Yet, blackjack is not the only game available and you will find fun at the slots, the roulette wheel and all the poker tables you can dream of when you gamble online.

You may be required to download special software to your computer so that you can get in on the gaming action. Typically the software applications that allow individuals to play games are easy to install and are free to you when you create an account. This software gives you the sense that you are really at the casino—that is, without all the hubbub and noise around you that you will typically find in a brick and mortar casino. If you are a housewife and you choose to gamble online you don’t have to worry about the typical problems associated with travel and travel costs. You can enjoy a simulated casino setting in a safe environment.

Are there any risks associated with gambling online? In fact, there are risks associated with any kind of gambling, whether it is online or off. The biggest risk that you face while gambling is losing a lot of money. Gambling is just that—a risk, it is important when you are gambling that you take care not to become over eager—don’t be willing to place just one more bet to get the big bucks. Anyone gambling should set a budget and stick to it. Once the money is gone it is gone and placing one more bet is only going to get you even deeper in the hole than the hand before. When you are gambling you can truly benefit when you know the right time to fold.

Gambling can become an addiction. Some people enjoy the high of winning and their mood will mirror that high, just as their mood will mirror the low they feel when they lose. In essence, when gambling becomes an obsession for you or when you begin to really rely on winning to feel good, a significant problem has begun and you will need to seek help for your gambling problem before it gets out of control. There is counselling available for anyone that has gambling problems and if you suspect that your gambling is an addiction, you should refrain from playing the game and seek out assistance for your problem immediately, before it becomes an all consuming and destructive issue. Make gambling fun and you will really enjoy the experience.
