Lottery Syndicates - Should you Participate?

Tuesday, July 24th, 2007

There are times when you’ve got to look up to the power of “One” and there are times when you just have to say “Team”. When talking of lotteries, you increase your chances of winning manifold when you participate in an e-lottery syndicate.

An online syndicate harnesses the power of the internet to enable people participating in a lottery to win more frequently. This happens because when you purchase a lottery via a syndicate, you automatically make yourself eligible for the winnings of other members. In essence you are entering a given lottery draw multiple times at no extra cost. Thus, your chances of winning increase exponentially. Of course, the winnings are split between the participants. So, an e-lottery syndicate is basically a trade-off between a potentially huge lottery win against better chances of winning a smaller packet

Syndicates can span many countries; for example Virtual World Direct (VWD), which runs a syndicated effort for the Euro Millions lottery, is available to citizens from Belgium, France, Spain, Austria, Ireland, Portugal, Switzerland, and Luxembourg. The vast player population along with the combined lotteries of different nations makes Euro Millions the biggest bumper lottery system out there.

By becoming a member of an e-lottery syndicate you get access to some of the largest tax-free lotteries in the world. Membership is easy; all that is required is a computer with an internet connection and a credit card. With an e-lottery syndicate you do not need to keep purchasing tickets every week and visit your lottery seller for checking results. The whole system is computerized and when you win you are intimated by email. You do not have to go anywhere to collect your winnings, they are sent to your house.

There are several online resources which review e-lottery syndicates. You can refer these before you decide upon the syndicate most suited to your style and pocket. Membership fees may vary and the number of participants in a group can also differ. You should also check for member reviews on different online forums, inputs from your countrymen can be especially revealing. Check for the kind of customer service and back-office support offered by the syndicate. Of course, scams abound and you should be alert and not fall prey to anything that sounds too good to be true.

Two popular lottery syndicates are the UK National Lottery syndicate and Euro Millions syndicate run by VWD. The UK National Lottery syndicate consists of multiple groups with 49 members in each group. So, the winnings in a group are shared by 49 members. With just £5, you make yourself eligible to winning against 88 lines that open every week. The money is to be paid 4 weeks in advance. The draw occurs twice a week. The VWU Euro Millions syndicate has 39 members to a group and there are 36 lines in each draw.

Finally, you could also take a look at the range of software available for lottery and gaming enthusiasts. This includes syndicate management software for syndicates, entry management software, and lottery analysis software for the players.

How to Beat Roulette with A Simple 3 Point System

Sunday, July 22nd, 2007

Many players try to beat roulette by buying a “sure fire” roulette system for money. These systems promise consistent gains and to make the buyer rich and beat roulette consistently. Of course, the reality does not match the hype and these systems are ALL doomed to failure.

You can beat roulette, but it does not involve buying a system, more of that later. For now, lets look at why a mathematical roulette system cannot work.

Roulette Systems

In roulette, each spin of the roulette wheel is totally random. Let’s say that the colour red has come up twice in succession. The odds of this number coming up on the next spin are no greater or worse than if the number had not come up in 100, 500 or 1,000 spins previous spins, the odds still remain 50% - 50%.

All spins of the roulette wheel are independent of each other and totally unrelated to the previous spin history. As the outcome of the spin is unrelated to any other, roulette is a game of pure chance.

A mathematical system in roulette that promises consistent gains is a contradiction in terms, because if you have no reliable historical data, mathematical formulas are useless.

In mathematics, you know what is definitely going to happen, in roulette you have the exact opposite you never know what is going to happen!

Your Own Simple 1 - 2 - 3 Roulette System!

For games of chance like roulette, the best a player can do is to wager on bets having the lowest casino advantage and to find the right type of roulette table.

Once you have done this, you have put the odds as much in your favour as possible. Here are three simple steps to help you beat roulette.

Rule 1: Play European

The European version has 37 slots with a single 0; the American version has an extra slot, a 00 to make 38.

The house advantage is 2.7% For European and 5.26% for the American table. Simple - play European!

Rule 2: Avoid These Bets

These include all single number bets, because these types of bets have large disparities between odds of success and payouts.

Always avoid the five number bet, it has the worst odds on the table.

Rule 3: Bets to Place

Use bets whose odds are near to their payouts.

These “even money” bets include betting on Even, Odd, Low, (numbers 1 through 18), High, (numbers 19 through 36), Red, or Black.

These bets pay out odds of 1 : 1. With these bets, you’ll find your odds of winning win are 45% making it a very low risk way to bet.

Finally, look for a European single-zero wheel that offers a rule called ‘en prison.’ If you make even money bet and the ball lands on zero, you don’t lose your bet. Instead, your bet is ‘imprisoned’, and you let it ride until the next spin. If your bet wins, you can remove it. The house edge here is cut in half and is just 1.35% making it the best bet of all.

The above simple guidelines will help you beat roulette and will outperform any mathematical system.

Keep in mind, that roulette is a game of chance and the most you can do is put the odds in your favour as much as possible and enjoy the game and maybe some healthy profits.

Confessions: Protecting The Pot

Saturday, July 21st, 2007

No, don’t worry, this isn’t that kind of topic. I’m talking about a concept that is important if you are playing poker. Oh wait, that’s in the process of being outlawed as well. Too bad, the point is important and I think it will help a lot of you make some better decisions in your lives. Poker is good at helping you to learn how to evaluate a decision correctly. The Business SituationFirst, let me lay out the business decision that led me to make a large mistake. I had just had a very successful year and it was annual review time. I knew I had stepped up to fill a role above mine in the org chart and had done a fantastic job in the process. However, at my review my boss told me that I would just be getting an average review, due to policy limits on giving out good ratings.I flipped out and left the company. Basically, my boss was a complete idiot and mishandled the situation and so did I. I won’t detail the place, the people involved, the financial issues involved or anything like that. However, I will say this was before the dot com meltdown and involved stock options and so forth.Evaluating The SituationYou see, in poker terms, both my boss and myself failed to evaluate the pot correctly. Instead of folding, leaving the company, I should have called and played out my hand. I should have tried a bit harder to get a look at some more cards. At the same time, my boss should have been more forthcoming and should not have played such a silly game when the consequences were so huge. You see, what I failed to find out was that I was a shoe-in for employee of the year. I had no idea that this was the case. All it would have taken was a pat on the back and recognition that I’d been busting my behind for the company during the previous year and I’d probably still be there now. So, while I am saddened when I look back on events, all I can do is try to help other people avoid such mistakes. Don’t play cute games during employee review season. Don’t jump and run without taking a careful look around and truly evaluating the situation.Live And LearnI was young and a bit hot-headed then. Heck, I’m sure I still am a bit more fiery than some people. It’s part of my character. Anyway, to get back on topic, in terms of poker, I should have protected my pot. Though I thought I had a losing hand the pot was so valuable I should have stayed in the game a little longer and paid to see a few more cards. My life would be very different now if I had. Again, from the business perspective, many things in life are able to be applied to on-the-job situations. We shouldn’t be too quick to eliminate tools and learning aids from our lives. We should be more open to accepting that most activities, even poker, have something to teach us about life.

Improving Your Online Poker Game

Friday, July 20th, 2007

Online poker is becoming more popular all the time. Since it is possible for people from all around the globe to now play against one another, the interest in online poker playing is ever increasing. It is, however, different from playing live games because you are not actually face-to-face with your opponents. You do not have the ability to spot things such as poker tells that you would normally see inn a live game.

Things such as facial expressions and hand gestures just aren’t visible. There are, however, online poker tells you may spot, such as reaction time and response time. Because of the way it is played, the strategy can be somewhat different with online poker than it is for a live game. Below are a few tips that will help you improve your online game.

Mix up your play. Once you master the fundamentals of a particular variant, it’s very easy because the concepts remain the same. The rules and strategies may vary with each poker variant, but the objective is the same. It’s often easy to lapse into mechanical play, especially when playing online. Even though many online games are equipped with the sound effects, graphics, and other aspects of the game you would find in a casino game that stimulate your playing, often times people playing in their home are in a comfortable environment which doesn’t always stimulate in the same manner. This can lead to your just playing by the book. Should you find yourself in this situation, failing to notice the tendencies of the players to your immediate right and left, or making moves without figuring out what you are trying to accomplish, work a little harder at mixing it up. Take bigger risks and don’t be afraid to implement new strategies.

Limpin’ ain’t easy. Though this can apply to both live and online play, it is most often seen in online games. Don’t limp when you are the first to enter a pot. The logic here is that since you have no money involved in the pot, you lose nothing if you fold. So, if you are going to call, you should have a hand that is expected to earn money.

Online tells. When playing poker, as mentioned above, most tells have to do with betting speed, since you do not have the advantage of watching the physical characteristics of your opponents. The dramatic pause is one of the easiest to catch. In most cases, a bet preceded by an extended pause can indicate strength from a player trying to project weakness. On the flip side, a check preceded by an extended pause is likely to indicate weakness from a player trying to project his or her strength or that he or she is strong enough to at least consider betting, while most likely the player is just trying to catch a free card.

Slot Machines

Thursday, July 19th, 2007

On average, one third of the casino’s total revenue is generated by Slot machines. Compared to other casino games such as Baccarat, Blackjack, Craps and Roulette, Slot machines have a number of advantages which explain their popularity among casino players. Some of these advantages include the following:

Easy to understand:

The Slot machine is probably the easiest game to understand and play. One simply decides on how much money to place on each bet, and how many lines to bet on, before pressing a button. There are absolutely no skills required.

Cheaper to play:

Unlike a game of Blackjack or Roulette, where the minimum bet costs a few dollars, Slot machines offer the player minimum bets ranging from one cent to a few dollars per spin, therefore allowing the person to play up to one hundred games for only one dollar.

Play at your own pace:

There is no time limit between spins. A player may take one minute or one hour between each spin without experiencing the pressure of having to quickly place a bet before the next game begins. This means that the games can last as long as the player wishes.

Large variety of game themes:

There are literally hundreds of Slot machine designs with many different game themes, graphics, lights and sound features. While the nature of the game is basically the same from one slot machine to another, being able to choose from a wide variety of different game themes makes each Slot machine seem rather unique.

Single player game:

Since it is a single player game, there is no pressure to play against others. One does not need to interact with any other person during the course of the game. This is a particularly attractive advantage for persons who are very shy or unable to speak the language.

Bonus features and free spin games:

Unlike the classic game of Blackjack or Roulette, most Slot machines offer bonus features which include free spins and a chance to win real money for free.

Eating, drinking and smoking:

Many Slot machine establishments allow players to eat, drink or smoke while playing the game. This adds to the player’s sense of enjoyment and freedom without having to worry about what other players are thinking or how they will react.

No pushing or shoving:

Unlike a game of Roulette where players often push and shove their way between other players in order to place a bet, one does not need to tolerate such behavior when playing Slots.

Real money:

While classic casino games are played with plastic casino chips, Slot machines are played with real money notes and coins, making the gambling experience much more realistic for the player.

Privacy:

Being a single player game, one is able to bet as much or as little on any game without the knowledge of other persons. This is a significant advantage considering the fact that one does not want to attract the attention of any questionable characters by betting large amounts of money in open view of a group of people.

Given these set of facts, it is no wonder that Slot machines are one of the most popular games in a casino, often generating approximately one third of the total casino’s income.

Casino Gambling - Keep Within your Limits

Tuesday, July 17th, 2007

Gambling can be very addictive. Should the person decide to do this despite the warning then it is best to be prepared so that the player will not go over board about it.

The casino is a place that is filled with the people who are rich and famous. Being in the same establishment with such celebrities is exciting like being transported off to another universe. This effect may change how an individual looks at things and this happens even to the smartest of people.

Establishments such as these are concerned only with one thing and that is making money. The way this is done is like magic. It lets the person gives away money and win or lose, the player is enjoying it. This is done normally in a few ways,

1. Casinos turn cash into chips which are used in the game. Each of these have a corresponding value that sometimes, the player will just throw it around that usually leads to over betting.

2. Slot machines operate on putting in a token. The value of each token is twenty five cents. Should a person use twenty tokens and has not won anything, this means that in less than 5 minutes, the player just threw away five dollars!

3. Casinos usually give players drinks for free. This may help in letting the person relax for a game but it can also let the person keep on betting until there is nothing left. This could be because of the alcohol in the drink that alters the player’s way of thinking.

4. The things that happen in the casino are very fast paced. Dealers move very quickly that dollar bills leave the pocket and it’s gone.

By keeping this in mind, the person should play decisively and slowly to avoid losing that much money.

Should the person decide to spend a vacation in Las Vegas, it is best to budget how much will be used only for gambling. This should not be included as part of the pocket money for other things such as food, shopping, shows and other activities.

Once the money for both have been determined, the cash that is used for the casino should be divided based on the length of stay. That way, there is money that can be played for the duration of the vacation.

A good example was offered by a frequent visitor of Vegas who placed the money in envelopes which was dependent on the duration of the stay. For example, the trip will last 4 days and a budget of $200 has been allocated for gambling. Each envelope should contain $50.

At the casino, only one envelop will be brought out. This can be used on a variety of games and not just one to experience what the others have to offer. Should the individual win some money for that day, the money should be placed returned in the envelope and kept. This is not to be opened until returning home from the trip to resist the temptation of using the winnings the following day.

People often think that winning some money back and using it on other games is not the property of the owner. This is wrong since player just recovered what was lost in the earlier games.

Should the player be doing well, it is not a good idea to get greedy and spend more. It’s best to walk away and go home.

High Roller Online Casino Bonus Is Tricky

Monday, July 16th, 2007

When I first started playing at online casinos few years ago, I was a real bonus whore who tried out every possible way of getting free casino cash, every free dime and gambled it away. I never purchased maximum amount of money back then to receive maximum amount of bonus money, because I always thought: “Hey, I am going to win eventually anyway, I don’t want to spend extra $50 for getting more green to my casino account!” Of course, I lost it all and was quickly depositing again, this time without bonus, which clearly meant I was not very good handling my jumpy bankroll.

This is not what I do know. Although nowadays I don’t play slots, blackjack and craps very often at online casinos, I still hop by once in a while and give myself a shot. Some might call me a “bonus whore” even now, since I choose casinos by bonus. I don’t do that systematically anymore since I run my own gambling website and I keep getting generous bonus offers that I mostly keep for my visitors.

What I do now - I search the most generous bonus amount I can get from a casino with my first purchase and I buy myself that bonus. Searching the generous bonus amount includes reading terms and conditions carefully and doing some research work to make sure I am not getting ripped off.

I call these huge bonuses high roller bonuses, since they are perfect for people who like playing long sessions and who are willing to spend a lot of money in order to win big. High rollers are also aware that they are going to lose in a long term, but if they are going to lose anyway, why not lose the minimum amount of money? This is the root of online casino bonuses that every player should understand.

Since most of these high roller bonuses have similar terms and conditions, I will bring you few examples from random casinos and explain them to you. The following is essential, since if you don’t follow the terms you might lose all the winnings and the bonus itself as well.

The first example is from Racetrack Casino, that has 20% first deposit bonus up to $500. In the interests of fair gaming, they require you to have wagered a minimum of six times the total amount deposited plus bonus, up to a maximum wager of $18,000 for each deposit plus bonuses made during the bonus promotion time. The following is extremely important for you to understand! - If you make a withdrawal before wagering six times your deposit and bonus, the bonus money and winnings will be removed from your account.

The other example comes from Europa Casino. This casino claims to have $2400 welcome bonus for all the players, although it isn’t quite so. They have one of the trickiest bonus systems. I have personally only used the $500 welcome bonus, which is actually a 25% first deposit bonus. “Low rollers” have to do with 100% first deposit bonus with many times smaller first purchase.

To the bonus: In the interest of fair gaming they’re ordered to cash out any amount of money you must wager at least twelve times your play bonus plus deposit. Players depositing in U.K. Pounds must wager at least eighteen times your play bonus plus deposit. If you withdraw before having reached the minimum wagering requirements, your bonus and winnings will be void. So, again the similar bonus structure.

At least now you can understand why casinos offer those bonuses - it’s not very likely you have lots of money left when you have wagered at least twelve times your play bonus plus deposit. But you can always get lucky, and this is what we all want when we step in to a casino!

Texas Holdem Poker: Lingo, Terms, and Table Language

Sunday, July 15th, 2007

Texas Holdem has become the darling of the poker scene, and many are rushing to find the rules for this popular poker game. If you aren’t familiar with some of the terms used in Texas Holdem, you may be at a loss for understanding its rules. To get a firm grip on the rules for Texas Holdem, it’s a good move on your part to be familiar with some of the terms used before jumping into the actual how to of the game.

First, let’s cover the types of Texas Holdem poker games. There are three main types, and depending on locality, there may be slight changes of the rules within each type of poker game. For the sake of simplicity, we will target the three main types of Texas Holdem.

Fixed Limit Texas Holdem is a game where the betting is set within a certain monetary range. As an example, you may see games played where the betting is limited from the five dollar, to ten dollar range. This would indicate that the bets are limited to five dollars in the pre-flop and flop, and limited to ten dollars in the turn and river.

Pot Limit Texas Holdem has a form of limited betting also, however it is not predetermined before the game. The limit in Pot Limit Texas Holdem is limited to the amount currently in the pot. This allows the betting limit to increase as the pot increases.

No Limit Texas Holdem is where you’ll find the betting is only limited to the amount the players are willing to bet. There are no set betting limits in this game. If played within a casino, players may be limited on how often they can raise within each game. No Limit Texas Holdem is most often played by the experienced players with high bankrolls.

Now that we’ve covered the types of Texas Holdem, let’s get down to the terminology used in all of those games.

Blind bet: The blind bet is the bet made by players before the cards are dealt for the round. Blind bets are usually made by the first two players on the left of the dealer.

Call: When a player matches the bet of another player, it’s referred to as a call.

Check: When a player “checks”, they are not placing a bet. When a player checks they are opting to not place a bet. A check can only occur if there have been no other bets placed in the round. Checking means that the player chooses not to bet, but still stays in the game.

Fold: When a player folds, they are quitting the current game and will no longer be placing any bets on that game. They will continue play on the next deal.

Raise: To raise simply means you’re betting more than the last player.

All In: To go “All In” means the player is betting everything they have on your hand.

Dealer Button: The dealer button is a token used to determine who the current dealer is and who is to place the blind bets. It is passed in a clockwise direction to the next player after each round.

Pre-Flop: This is the very first round of Texas Holdem. The dealer gives each player two cards, which are called pocket cards.

Flop: This is the second round of Texas Holdem poker, and is when the first three communal cards are placed face up on the table. These communal cards can be used by all the players to create the best five card hands.

Turn: The third round of Texas Holdem is referred to as the turn. It’s this round in which a fourth communal card is placed face up.

River: This is the last round of Texas Holdem. A fifth communal card is placed face up on the poker table in this round.

Now that you’re familiar with Texas Holdem terms, you’re ready to get down to the business of learning the rules. May Lady Luck be with you!

Poker: Challenge Your Mind

Saturday, July 14th, 2007

Games of skill allure players because they are beatable and the people that play them try to learn how to beat them more often than they lose. If they can’t beat them, they will try their hearts out until they do. It is something they have the fire and passion for because of the sense of competition.

This is especially true of poker. Doyle Brunson is a most competitive poker player and although he looks good for his 70+ years, he is a man who wears the look of somewhat an uneasy life. It is because of his profession. There is not a harder way to make a living than in the world of gambling. Mr. Brunson has done it successfully, but he has most likely found high levels of stress involved.

Even though skill games bring more stress to those players who play them than to the thrill seekers looking for games of chance, the players who possess skills and discipline often win consistently year in and year out. The games of skill can lead someone into an exciting career as a professional gambler using developed expertise in pursuit of a consistent income.

If a full-time career as a professional gambler is not an option, these skill games can also act as supplementary income, especially with the explosion of online Texas Hold’em which gains in popularity with each passing month.

However, on the flipside, why do so many people lose it all in games of skill? Is it the lack of self-discipline? Is it a deep-seeded desire to give their money away as they self-destruct?

These are all good questions and there is a logical answer to all of them. The answers will vary but they still share the same roots, and it’s in the simple little word – greed.
