John Ascuaga’s Nugget Casino Reviewed by Thehooks

Wednesday, October 31st, 2007

The Club Cal Neva sports book is located on the bottom floor of the Nugget Casino. Down stairs there is a nice bar, bingo parlor, horse bet racing section, a deli, and many big screens to watch the games. When staying at the Nugget this is an easy walk back and forth to the Silver Club.

This is the sports book if you are looking for all the betting options and want a clean atmosphere. The staff is very friendly and you never have to ask for a drink toke. The lines can get long right before a game so get your bets down early or get ready to walk over to the Silver Club. The Club Cal Neva sportsbook has the best odds on the parlay cards and carries money lines on most games. You can also expect to see a first half and a second half line for all the games. The action is endless through out the Nugget. They have every table game and over 1,000 machines for your enjoyment. The restaurants are very good in the Casino and the rooms are very clean.

The only down side to staying at the Nugget is if you are a bargain shopper you will not get any deals on the rooms here. The Nugget does not believe in lowering the room rates, a small price to pay for such a great hidden gem in Northern Nevada.

The Nugget and the Silver club anchor downtown Sparks. Sparks has done a great job of remodeling downtown and offers many great events through out the year. Most of the events play out on Victorian Avenue between the Silver Club and John Ascuaga’s Nugget Casino. There is a great water fountain right outside the Movie Theatre, which sits 200 yards to the sides of the two casinos.

Going Bonkers on the Slots

Tuesday, October 30th, 2007

Whether you’re in Vegas, Atlantic City or sitting in your jammies at your computer you can play one of the most popular slot games out there, Bonkers. Guess which one is the most fun? According to thousands and thousands of people playing Bonkers in the comfort of your home, it is proving to be very desirable.

Of course Vegas and Atlantic City won’t go out of business but the popularity and convenience of online casinos are giving them a good run. Let’s face it, many times you just don’t have the time or the money to take that trip but you still love playing the slots like Bonkers and winning cash!

You play online Bonkers just as you would in the casino. You have 3 reels with the payline displayed in front of you, you decide if you want to bet $.05, $.25, $.50, $1, and $5, pull that lever and the reels are spinning. When you hit two Bonkers on the pay line you will get 3 guaranteed free winning spins. Once you get three Bonkers you receive 10 guaranteed free winning spins. You will see these hits on the Free Spins meter by the pay table. Use them up because you can’t win any more while you are playing those. If you get three red 7’s during your free spins that will end the free spins and return you to regular play. You will be going Bonkers after all that free spinning.

If you want to play like you’re in a casino but you still want to keep your jammies on then a good game of online Bonkers is just what you need.

Playing No Limit Multi Table Poker Tournaments

Monday, October 29th, 2007

The multi table tournaments are very popular and they gain more and more fans because amongst no limit multi table tournaments we can count the WSOP and The World of Poker tour. People try to get into them and they must play multi table tournaments to do this. People avoid no limit because they are scared of what they can lose and you can see rarely no limit games outside a tournament.

At the beginning of a no limit tournament you must keep in mind that you are not playing your average no-limit ring game. Keep the bluffing in modest limits because as you will see, because of so many people, the chips each one has are smaller than the pot. And this means you can lose much more bluffing than you can actually win, so bluffing is usually out here. So, when still at the beginning, and when your stack is comparable to the stack others have, you should try and play by the rules, don’t push your luck and gamble as little as possible because gambling just doesn’t pay off here.

When arriving to the middle of the tournament, if you made it that far, you will need to change the strategy. Here you must focus on stealing the blinds and you will experience the side effects of the gap concept: it will take not so good hands to steal the blinds but you need much bigger hands to call that raise or any raise at all. In the middle rounds everyone will just try to survive, so act accordingly. Increase the chips you have one bi tat a time and have patience for them to grow. Unless, of course you already have a very big stack in which case you should be in control, raise a lot and attempt to get others out of the game.

As you approach the end of the tournament, the blinds will become very big and the stacks will do that also. So, if your stack is low you can wait in the pre-flop for the opportune moment and go all-in. When having a big stack, be aggressive and, again, try to control the game by any means.

Going all in should aim not for the best hand, but for at least a marginal one like a pocket pair or an ace with a good kicker. That should give you a nice slice and should keep you going for a little more.

Asian Handicaps Explained

Saturday, October 27th, 2007

The most common way to bet on football in the UK is with 3 way betting (sometimes called 1X2). The three options are home win, draw and away win. Working out whether you win a bet is straight forward. If you bet on a home win and the home side wins, you win, else you loose. The same goes for the draw and the away win.

The aim of Asian Handicap betting is to reduce the outcome of the bet from 3 outcomes to 2. This is achieved by giving one side a head start. At first the figures may seem a bit daunting but once you understand a few common handicaps the rest is easy.

The easiest handicap is to picture is the +0.5 handicap. This is given when one team is a clear favourite. So if a home win is expected, the away side may be given a half goal head start. If you bet on the away side the outcome of your bet is as follows:

Home win - Lose bet Draw - Win bet Away win - Win bet

Another easy handicap to grasp is the +0 handicap. This is where no side is the favourite so neither side is given a goal head start. If you bet on the away side, the bet outcomes are as follows:

Home win - Lose bet Draw - Draw bet* Away win - Win bet

*A draw bet is where your stakes are refunded.

The final straightforward handicap is the +1 handicap. This is where one team is a very strong favourite. A half goal handicap is not enough so the weaker side is given a full goal head start. So if an away side was given a +1 handicap, and you bet on the away team the outcomes are as follows:

Home win by 2 or more goals - Lose bet Home win by one goal - Draw bet. Draw - Win bet Away win - Win bet

If you bet on the home team (which would have a -1 handicap) the outcome is as follows:

Home win by 2 or more goals - Win bet Home win by one goal - Draw bet. Draw - lose bet Away win - lose bet

These handicaps can be added together to form other handicaps. So if there was an banker type favourite the handicap may be +1.5. Here the favourite has to win by 2 clear goals or the team loses the handicap bet.

Do not confuse these with the 1X2 (or European) Handicaps. A -1 handicap 1X2 is equivalent to an Asian Handicap of -1.5. A +1 1X2 handicap is equivalent to a +0.5 Asian Handicap.

The handicaps that people struggle with the most are the 0.25 and the 0.75 handicaps. How is a quarter ball handicap different to a half goal handicap? Surely if you bet on a team with a plus quarter ball handicap and the match ends in a draw, you should win your bet the same as with a half ball handicap. That’s actually not too far from what happens.

When you put these handicaps with quarters in them, you are actually placing 2 separate bets. So a quarter ball handicap is made up of a 0 handicap bet and a +0.5 handicap bet. Your stake is simply divided in half and put on each bet separately.

So if you placed a bet on a team with a plus a quarter handicap and the match ended in a draw, you would win half. Your +0 handicap bet would have drawn and you would get your stake back, whereas your +0.5 bet would have won so you win. Overall you win but you don’t win as much as if the handicap was +0.5. If you bet on a team with a -0.25 handicap and the match was a draw, you would lose half your stake.

The 0.75 handicap is simply made up of the +0.5 handicap and the +1 handicap. So if you bet on a team with a -0.75 handicap and they won by exactly one goal, you would only win half. A 1.25 handicap is made up of a +1 and a +1.5 handicap.

Why bother with these Asian Handicaps if we already have 3 way betting? The answer lies in the bookie margin. With three outcomes the bookie can put a higher margin into the pricing. Even shopping around for the best 3 way odds the book value is still around 106% for a typical match. With Asian Handicaps and the two outcomes the bookie margin is much less. By doing a little shopping around its possible to reduce the bookie margin to zero on most football matches.

Recommended bookies for Asian Handicaps are Bet365, Premierbet, Sportingbet, Ladbrokes, Gamebookers and Victor Chandler. Betfair do Asian Handicaps but after commission the odds are generally worse there.

Travelin’ Texas Hold ‘em: Poker Jazzes up Dull Meetings

Thursday, October 25th, 2007

As a money manager and banker, Stephen Kelly went to a lot of corporate meetings and was usually bored out of his skull. After long business days, there was the reception, then dinner, then a long evening in a hotel with nothing out there of interest to him. Same old, same old.

In 2003, he attended a charity Texas Hold ‘em event at Stone Mountain, Georgia, near his home base of Atlanta, and had a great time. He was so jazzed by the experience that at 3 o’clock in the morning he was awake, working on a business plan for US Poker Series, a company that adds poker tournaments to corporate seminars, workshops, and conferences, and sometimes charity events as well.

Kelly’s tagline is, “Out of the barroom and into the board room.”

Within ten days of putting up a website he had his first client and today receives about 30 inquiries a month. He has a staff of a dozen full-time people. The company is headquartered in Atlanta, with satellite offices in Chicago, Los Angeles, and Philadelphia.

US Poker Series works with corporate event planners, destination management companies, and hotel planners to seamlessly add a Travelin’ Texas Hold ‘em Poker Tournament to a corporate event. Trained dealers, often recruited from local training schools, casino-grade tables and chips, and a professional tournament director are provided. Play money only is used. There is no buy-in.

“No one wins any money; no one loses any money,” he says. . Each attendee starts out with 1-2,000 chips. Then they play like The Big Dogs, relishing saying, “All in.”

Prizes include things like iPods, trophies, and engraved poker sets to the tournament winner, with plaques going to others who made the final table.

Beginners receive instruction prior to play. In 11 of the first 12 tournaments, beginners made their way to the winner’s circle.

Kelly prides himself on offering a new form of corporate entertainment. Recent clients have included those from the auto, banking, and software industries. Rather than sitting and passively watching someone else perform, the tournament offers interactive fun. It is an opportunity for all to participate in today’s poker craze.

“The guest is the king of the event and we treat them as such. Our objective,” he says, “is that everyone has a great time.”

“A much higher ratio of women play in these corporate tournaments,” Kelly notes. He points out that some industries, real estate, for example, have a high percentage of women. About half the tournament top prizes to date have gone to women.

He remembers one event in Newport Beach, California that had about 180 women playing tournament poker. “It was the best event we ever had,” says Kelly.

The company offers its services to clients with as few as 25 attendees. The biggest tournament, held in Los Angeles, had 600 attendees. The cost typically runs between $75-$125 per person. Usually an event triggers future business, as attendees in one meeting are often meeting planners in another.

Kelly works with clients to determine how long play should last. Typically it is a three or four hour event at the end of a day. US Poker Series has some control over the time factor by increasing the blinds at regular intervals to speed up the play.

A sense of drama engulfs the final table, as it does in the big time TV events: the table is elevated, it is backlighted, and a crowd hugs the rail. The tournament director is on a microphone, calling the action.

US Poker Series also offers to film the event, edit it, and provide a 30-minute VHS or DVD. This additional service costs between $800 - $1500.

There is a “Loser’s Lounge,” with a bar and sometimes a disc jockey. There are also consolation tables so players can continue the fun even though they are knocked out of the tournament.

Kelly points out that the essential characteristics of his model are his company’s ability to work across the nation, professional presentation and delivery, and experience.

Kelly and his staff are prepared to take an initial inquiry and roll out a complete, customized package. They work out the space, equipment, and coordination of logistics with the client, their event planners, and the hotel.

And then they deliver.

“We are trying to put the best product possible into the market. It is an upscale event to enjoy and not forget anytime soon. No one delivers anything close to what we do. We’re the Four Seasons of such events,” says Kelly.

The company’s website is www.uspokerseries.com

Party of Poker Fools!

Wednesday, October 24th, 2007

Several times a week I sit down to enjoy some multi table tournaments at Party Poker, and have done reasonably well in the 10 to 30 entry fee range having reached 18 final tables just this last month. It does seem though, that even taken calculated, favorable risks, that the party poker donkeys insist on trying to outdraw a made hand. Suffice to say, it seems to happen more often than it should. Now don’t get me wrong, if it wasn’t for these players, there wouldn’t be profitable poker. Having them draw out against you is, however painful, a step further towards your profitable play. In with the best, even dominating hands can get outdrawn, but it is entirely up to yourself to maintain composure and know that cooler heads prevail, and donkeys are just meant to keep the chips warm for their eventual return, whether this tournament or next.

Here is a recent example from a party poker hand history I selected to analyze. You can see the hand history using my bio link below.

At mid tournament I have about 12,500 chips with 2 or 3 others about the same and the rest between 3000 and 6000. Blinds are 150/300 and I am dealt QsQd with which I raise to 800 after UTG and the next player fold to me. DonkeyOne next to me calls my raise and it’s passed around to the small blind (DonkeyTwo) who curiously reraises to 1150. I call with the concern of now seeing an ace or king on the flop, as does DonkeyOne.

Here is the flop: 4c 4h 6c. This is good for me as no over cards fell, and the low cards didn’t concern me too much with the preflop raising. But DonkeyTwo comes out with a weak bet of 300 into the pot of now 4,000, so I reraise to 1500, thinking to take it down right there to cut of any flush draws.

DonkeyOne Calls! Wtf? He was loose before, but I didn’t think he was stupid. The slightly more intelligent DonkeyTwo realizes he is beat and folds.

Here is the turn: 3h which I felt had to be a brick. So the board reads 4c 4h 6c 3h. I bet 1725 and DonkeyOne reraises me all in with another 1200 chips. I have to call figuring that maybe he was slow rolling aces here but as I later found out, he had 7s 3s and hit his 3 figuring he now had me. Yes, 7s.3s, one of the weakest hands to play, and he played it to aggressive preflop raising.

The cards turn over and I see his foolish hand knowing I am going to eliminate him, and become one of the tournaments chip leaders.

Here is the river. 5h. I didn’t understand at first, but his foolish play had miraculously turned a straight and knocked off about 70% of my stack. When I got my wits about me, I continued to see DonkeyOne on an incredible run of luck, eventually becoming the tournament chip leader but not before staring poker death in the eyes several more times, only to come back with runner runner what seemed to be about ten times. For example, he later called an all in bet after the flop showed 3 overcards to his pocket 3’s. His competitor showed QQ, and the turn and river brought DonkeyOne a set of quad threes!

I regrouped and finished in the money, carefully taking some chips back from DonkeyOne, but largely avoiding his unreal luck. He finished just a few places ahead of me, eventually running out luck. Had he had some judgement to back up his luck, he easily could have controlled the tournament through to the end. But alas, it is because of players like DonkeyOne and DonkeyTwo, that Party Poker is great place to play.

Online Casino Gambling

Tuesday, October 23rd, 2007

People always did like to play games and now that we have the internet the world can play together from at home.

Regardless where somebody lives or what time it is there will always be somebody online to play.

Multi player online poker rooms for example are open 24/7 so that any poker player can play her or his favourite poker game online against other players in the internet. Internet poker rooms offer daily tournaments to win cash prizes and even seats for poker championships so that any online player can qualify for the world’s most important tournaments like the Monte Carlo Millions or the World Series of Poker, WSOP that first was played in Las Vegas Binions Horseshoe.

Bingo players also can play at home in virtual 3D bingo halls and chat with other bingo fans in a chatroom.

Online Casino Gambling against a computer is fun, too. The video poker machines that can be found in any real casino can be played from at home. Even for real money. The same is with slots, roulette, blackjack, craps, sicbo and other games we know from casinos. So called flash casinos even don’t need to be downloaded. The casino games can be played instantly in the browser.

Online Gambling surely is not the same as taking a gamble in Las Vegas but players don’t need real cash but can play for virtual money from the casino.

Bacara, El Preferido Del Agente 007

Monday, October 22nd, 2007

Pac-10 Season Preview - USC

Sunday, October 21st, 2007

For the next ten weeks, we’ll take a look at the teams in the Pac-10 and analyze them in order of their predicted finish. Of course, by the time we get to the tenth week of the season, there should be a surprise here and there, so it’ll be a chance for readers of this article to see where I am wrong.

The team on the top of the Pac-10 will be the USC Trojans. While the cream of the crop has had a changing of the guard before this season, the team has restocked quite well. Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback Matt Leinart has been replaced by John David Booty, who comes from a football family and has had the mixed blessing of sitting and watching as the Trojans went 37-2 over the last three seasons. Booty was elected as one of four team captains for the Trojans this season, and is healthy following back surgery. Having him under center means the Trojans won’t struggle as much to start the season.

Booty has some experience with him, too. He’s got maybe the best wide receiver tandem in the country lining up on either side of him, with Steve Smith and Dwayne Jarrett coming back for another season. While Booty doesn’t have the luxury of big-play tight end Dominique Byrd, he’s still got Fred Davis, who will be one of the best in the country this season. And while the Trojans are sure to miss all-world running back Reggie Bush, USC has some stallions coming into the program out of high school as well as a player who was recruited with Bush and LenDale White: running back Chauncey Washington.

The T-shirts back in 2003 read “Bush and Booty”. One got to national prominence earlier than the other did, and the other one will get there soon enough.

Defense is where the Trojans stand out. Late in the season last year, there were a number of injuries that hit the Trojans hard. But this year, there is a great deal of depth on defense, including LBs Brian Cushing, Rey Maualuga, Keith Rivers, Oscar Lua, and Dallas Sartz, who is returning from injury. As well, the defensive secondary is deep and experienced. In the past, it’s been the offensive studs that have made this USC team a wonderful dynasty. This season’s team will be more of a Pete Carroll team, heavy on defense.

A concern for the Trojans is special teams. While their kicker, Mario Danelo, was accurate, his leg isn’t terribly strong. And USC lost a great punter in Tom Malone, who was still solid last season in spite of being hampered by injuries. Two walk-ons will compete for the punting job, which will not be handled as well as in years past. Issues on special teams will cost the Trojans yards here and there and may cost them a game late in the season.

All told, the Trojans are still deep enough talent-wise, and their coaching staff still good enough, to make a significant impact this season. They will be a top-five team in the country and win the Pac-10 title.
