Steve Wynn

The third serious player on the market of gambling entertainments in Las Vegas and Macao. Steve was born in 1942 in Connecticut. Unlike Kirk and Sheldon, Steve received very good education, according to American standards - he graduated from Pennsylvania university. Steve had to engage in private business straight after graduation. His father, the owner of the network of bingo clubs in the west of the U.S., died when Steve was still a student. The son continues his business. Steve’s career in “big” business starts in 1967. Having saved some money, he buys a small share of the casino-hotel “Frontier” in Las Vegas, where he moved for permanent residence together with his wife. Having no funds to build his own casino, Steve gets acquainted with the owners of the already existing casinos and offers them his services in renewal of their business. His first project was reconstruction of the casino «Golden Nugget». Steve transformed the absolutely ordinary casino into a luxurious institution, which immediately became a great success with the players. Having showed himself and earned a pretty penny, Steve decided to invest money into buying shares of other Vegas casinos, in order to reconstruct them as well. The following major project is renovation of the casino «The Mirage». According to Steve’s conception, it was to become the most outstanding, rich, elite casino of Las Vegas. He intends to found there a big park and an artificial volcano, and make the best rooms and hotel service in Vegas. Steve bets on luxury. Despite apprehensions of the partners (the project was very expensive), he managed to embody his ideas. «The Mirage» became and for a long period remained the most prestigious casino of Las Vegas, bringing huge profits to its owners.

After this project Steve’s name enters the history of the world capital of gambling. However, Steve does not rest on his laurels. Conversely, he becomes thoroughly engrossed in a new reckless venture. Developing his conception of a “luxurious casino”, he totally changes the casino-hotel «Bellagio»: an artificial lake, an internal greenhouse, an art gallery with canvases of great painters, expensive boutiques and restaurants. Enormous diligence, multiplied by talent, made Steve one of the richest people in Vegas, the owner of casinos. In 2000 he sells «The Mirage» to the company «MGM Grand», which after this purchase changes its name to «MGM Mirage».

Wynn spends most of his money on building a new institution, which opens in April 2005 on the site of «Desert Inn». The new brainchild of Steve is called «Wynn Las Vegas».

Apart from interests in Vegas, Steve invests funds into conquering the Asian market. In the short-term perspective it is planned to open the casino «Wynn Macau». Steve’s activity has brought him 2.1 billion dollars, which allowed him to occupy the 365th position in «Forbes» world rating.

Stanley Ho

The wealthiest representative of gambling industry in Asia who for more than 30 years was the single ruler of this industry in Macao. Stanley was born in 1921 in Hong Kong. His great-grandfather was a Dutch Jew who married a local woman. The Ho family was one of the most renowned and influential in Hong Kong. But Stanley was not able to make use of the wealth of this family. His father went bankrupt, when Stanley was a student. Due to financial break-down his two brothers committed a suicide, and his father renounced his family and left Stanley with two sisters and mother. Despite all hardships, he successfully graduated from Hong Kong university and mastered three languages. Stanley started his career in a trade company, located in Macao. Outstanding business skills and proficiency in several languages allow him to become a shareholder of the company at the age of 21. Ho received his first fortune as a result of a very unpleasant accident. Stanley was responsible for sea trade. During one of the voyages the ship with Stanley, who carried a great amount of money, aboard was subject to an armed attack. Stanley, practically on his own (many of his fellow employees were killed) stands against the gang and returns both the money and the ship. The company duly appreciated the courage of their employee and rewarded him a bonus of one million! In 1943 Ho invested his million into construction industry, his new company is located in Hong Kong. At this time the city undergoes a real construction boom, and Stanley receives very decent dividends from his business. But his ambitions are not limited to construction business, together with his partners he wins the tender for the monopolistic right to open gambling institutions in Macao. Stanley won the tender with the sum of only 410 thousand dollars. For many years Ho’s company becomes the monopolist of Macao gambling market. Stanley invests all his money and skills in this company. By 1972 he owns 9 casinos, including casino-hotel «Lisboa», one of the most beautiful casinos of the world.

In the 90-ies Ho extends beyond the borders of Macao and opens 9 casinos on the Philippines, however, as a result of a conflict with the president of this country, he had to renounce his Philippine business. Apart from the casino, Ho owns many betting operators and totalizators. In 2003 the budget of Macao by 30% consisted of revenues from the activities of the companies that belonged to Stanley. His business provides work to more than 10 thousand people. In 1998 Ho becomes one of the first living inhabitants of Macao, in whose honour the local street was named. But earlier or later everything comes to an end. Ho’s idyll ends in 2000, when Macao authorities decide to cancel monopoly for gambling industry. Since 2002 Ho has to share gambling industry with American “sharks” – Wynn and Adelson, who immediately used the chance to become familiar with Asian market. Presently Stanley Ho’s fortune is 6.5 billion dollars, he has the 84th position in the «Forbes» world rating.

Online Pai Gow Poker

Sunday, December 30th, 2007

Pai Gow poker is a Western spin on the ancient Chinese game Pai Gow, which used special dominos and dice. Pai Gow is a complicated, slow-paced game that was social in nature and rarely seen outside of Asia.

Pai Gow poker combines this ancient Chinese game and classic Western poker. It first appeared in Vegas casinos in 1986, so its still a relatively new game when compared to other casino games. Its popularity has dramatically increased over the past ten years, particularly where online play is concerned, and this surge in online popularity is largely due to improvements in technology that allow a graphically pleasing and accurate online representation.

Pai Gow poker is played with a regular 53-card deck that includes the Joker. The ranking of hands mimics that seen in traditional poker, with the exception that the joker plus four aces rank the highest. The object is to use seven dealt cards to create two hands that will beat the dealers two hands.

A unique component of Pai Gow Poker is that any participant can request to be the banker. When this occurs, players compare their hands to the player-banker rather than the house dealer. The player-banker wins all ties, collects losing wagers, and pays winners from their own pocket. When there is a player-banker, the house collects a five percent commission on any winning hands. In Pai Gow, the house advantage is 2.5 percent, although this becomes almost even when a player becomes the banker.

There arent many differences between online Pai Gow poker and the in-casino version. The most obvious difference that does exist, however, is that an online player is alone with the dealer. Traditionally, five or six players will be at a Pai Gow table at once. Although this may take some of the excitement out of playing, it gives the online player more control over his or her playing environment. An online player may choose to play without a lot of noise and other distractions. Cocktail waitresses, other conversations, or other casino-related sites and sounds do not interrupt the player. When playing Pai Gow online, players therefore find themselves in a better environment for maintaining focus and thinking through each decision. Further, there are no time constraints placed upon these decisions.

When playing Pai Gow poker online, players are dealt seven cards face up and the goal is simply to beat the hands of the dealer. Once dealt the seven cards, players will split them into two hands of two cards and five cards, and the rank of the latter must be greater than that of the former. Whether the player wins, looses, or ties depends on how the dealer splits its hand.

Pai Gow poker is now available in most Online Casinos. Its an interesting spin on a classic, and might offer a nice change of pace for those needing a little variety in their poker play.

Online casinos are not to be left behind, as there has been a rapid explosion of these as well. It may be correct to say that audiences are now enjoying the betting experience without being at the field themselves. Welcome to the world of virtual reality.

Doc’s 2006 March Madness Preview: Oakland Region

Friday, December 28th, 2007

There’s certainly not going to be much defense going on in the Oakland Region. That seems fitting for the laid-back Left Coast, and Memphis, UCLA and Gonzaga are all capable of scintillating offensive play.

I’m not going so as far as to call these teams “soft,” but let’s just say that with so many defensively-challenged clubs in one bracket, that could open it up for a hard-nosed team like Pittsburgh or Arkansas to do some damage.

Here’s my humble view of the Oakland Region for Doc’s 2006 March Madness Preview:

No. 1 Seed: Memphis (30-3 overall, 15-15 against the spread)

I am amazed at how quickly people are dismissing Memphis in this bracket. They have the most athletic team in the field, and a pair of stallions in Rodney Carney and Darius Washington. They are overlooked because they didn’t play in a big-time conference, but they dominated inferior competition because of the zeal with which they defend and rebound. Also, they started the year by beating UW-M, Alabama and UCLA - all tournament teams. They lost by three to Duke and by 11 to Texas, but they’ve beaten Gonzaga and are 8-3 against other schools in the field.

No. 2 Seed: UCLA (27-6 overall, 19-10 ATS)

The Bruins will be a very sheik Final Four pick. And with good reason. They have fabulous guard play, a load of athleticism and youth, and have proven themselves as the Best of the Left (Coast, that is). They are 9-3 outside of Pauley Pavilion, and enter the tourney on a seven-game winning streak. They’ve won those seven by an average of 17 points, including a 19-point maiming of Cal in the Pac-10 championship, and are on a 9-1 ATS surge. However, since 1999 only one Pac-10 team (Arizona, 2001) has made the Final Four.

No. 3 Seed: Gonzaga (27-3 overall, 12-18 ATS)

This bracket is tailor-made for the Zags. Xavier is a pushover. Indiana and SDSU can’t hang. If they advance that far, Gonzaga would meet either UCLA or Marquette and we would see about 400 points in either game. I know that they have been a perennial tournament disappointment since bursting onto the scene in the late 1990s as a bracket buster. But if they’re ever going to make a serious move and take their program to the Next Level this might be their best opportunity.

No. 4 Seed: Kansas (27-6 overall, 18-11 ATS)

The Jayhawks are the hottest team entering the NCAA Tournament, winning 15 of their previous 16 games. They have 10 freshman or sophomores on their roster, which makes me extremely nervous. But what they lack in experience they make up for with the hustle, determination and grit that you’d expect from a veteran club. They are the best team in the country in field goal defense, holding opponents to a miserable 36.8 percent shooting. They are also the one of the ten best rebounding teams in the nation.

No. 5 Seed: Pittsburgh (24-7 overall, 15-10-1 ATS)

In a two-on-two game, I may take center Aaron Gray and point guard Carl Krauser over just about anyone in the nation. In fact, the Panthers may be too reliant on their senior engine. They are 0-6 in games that Krauser hasn’t led the team in scoring, and if Kent State can find a way to neutralize him, Pitt could face their second consecutive one-and-done. Pitt is 28th in the nation in field goal defense and 11th in defensive rebounding.

Best first-round match up: No. 7 Marquette vs. No. 10 Alabama

I like the Golden Eagles here, but there’s one thing holding me back: Marquette has been weak on the road this season. Alabama has been gutsy all year, and was moderately surprised by how their seed slipped. The Crimson Tide have been pretty hot-or-cold in past tournaments, but they never lack for effort. The match-up to watch here is outstanding freshman point guard Dominic James from Marquette against sensational sophomore point guard Ronald Steele from Alabama.

Best potential second-round match up: No. 4 Kansas vs. No. 5 Pittsburgh

From what I’ve heard, a lot of the bobbleheads have the winner of this game coming out of the region. They’ve both been outstanding over the last month, and are both big names from Power Conferences. Expect a low-scoring grinder - which is exactly the type of game where a senior stud like Krauser can make a difference.

Upset Alert (first round): No. 12 Kent State vs. No. 5 Pittsburgh

The dreaded 5-12 meeting. Pittsburgh just has not been a very good NCAA Tournament team over the past few seasons. I think that Krauser can will this team into the Sweet 16, but I also expect them to be a bit worn down after playing four games in four nights in NYC. The Golden Flashes are tournament staples, and have knocked off one of the big boys before. This is more of a “Why Not” pick.

Upset Alert (second round): No. 7 Marquette vs. No. 2 UCLA.

Last year it was West Virginia knocking off Wake Forest in the second round. I think another Big East school will play the spoiler role this year. Remember, the Golden Eagles are one of just three teams that beat UConn this season and they are the ninth-best three-point shooting team in the country. UCLA has a tremendous advantage playing in their back yard, but West Virginia managed to head out to Cali and top the Bruins earlier this season, so they are not impervious to defeat.

Dark Horse team: No. 9 Bucknell

I know that this is a huge reach here, but the Bison are not afraid of anyone. Period. In the last year they have handled Pittsburgh, Syracuse, and Kansas. They brought back 12 of their top 13 scorers from last season’s tournament team, and are in the top 40 in the nation in field goal percentage and three-point shooting. But what I really like about them is that they are second in the country in points allowed (55.3) and fifth in field goal defense (38.1 percent). They just flat-out get after you defensively. Their first-round game against Arkansas is one of the best match ups we’ll see on Thursday or Friday. If they can hold off the Razorbacks, that will be an excellent primer for a meeting with Memphis.

Team That Makes Me Nervous: No. 3 Gonzaga

I noticed something about the Zags while watching them play in the WCC Tournament: Adam Morrison’s teammates don’t look like they enjoy playing with him. I’m dead serious. I’m a big Morrison Fan, but he’s like a prima donna wide receiver that is always open and always wants the ball. I think it wears on his teammates. Did you see them when their seed was announced on Selection Sunday? No emotion. They still don’t defend very well, and they think they can outscore opponents. That doesn’t win titles.

#54 Oregon St. Beavers Preview

Wednesday, December 26th, 2007

Spring practices are in the books and fall camps will be here before you know it so that means getting an early jump on the 2006 NCAA football season. Knowing the teams now will save you time in August and Matt Fargo is here to help you get a grasp of what to expect this upcoming year. We go from worst to first in this 2006 College Football Preview.

#54 Oregon St. Beavers 5-6 SU; 3-7 ATS

Fargos Take After making an appearance in the postseason three straight years, expectations were high in 2005 and after starting the season 4-2, the Beavers were looking good to make it to another bowl. However, Oregon St. dropped four of its last five games including a shellacking in the Civil War to Oregon and remained home for the holidays. All of the pieces are in place for the Beavers to improve on offense but the defense remains an issue. Oregon St. finished 105th in scoring defense and the young secondary was exploited all season as it ended 115th in passing defense. Nine starters are back on offense including senior quarterback Matt Moore who should be more efficient in his second year in the Beavers system. The schedule is not in Oregon St.s favor but it has one major asset and that is kicker Alexis Serna, the 2005 winner of the Lou Groza Award as the nations best kicker.

Returning Starters on Offense 9 Turnovers were the story for the Beavers offense in 2005 as their 36 giveaways were second most in the country. Moore accounted for 23 turnovers (19 interceptions and 4 fumbles) and he will need to turn that around in order for the Beavers to improve. Moore loses his best target in Biletnikoff winner Mike Hass but he does have some returning targets that can excel led by slot receiver Anthony Wheat-Brown. Also back is tight end Joe Newton, who had 56 catches in 2004 but missed all of last season with an ankle injury. The running game should improve this season as Yvenson Bernard is back following a spectacular sophomore campaign. The entire offensive line returns and should be one of the most improved in the entire country and is actually listed as one of the top ten units by some.

Returning Starters on Defense 7 This is the area Oregon St. needs to improve the most. The Beavers finished 17th in the country against the run last year but most teams went to a passing attack against them since they couldnt stop anyone. The entire front seven was solid but five key players, including two all-conference linebackers, need to be replaced. A bigger pass rush needs to be established to take some of the pressure off the secondary. A lot of young players were thrown into the fire last year in the defensive backfield and that year of experience can go a long way. All four starters are back in the secondary, including three sophomores, so while the unit should be better, it still has a long way to go. The defense allowed 33.2 ppg last season despite giving up 20 points or less four times and that average is the most since 1998.

Schedule The Beavers have a doable non-conference schedule this season with games against Eastern Washington, Idaho and Hawaii. The other out of conference game is at Boise St., a team looking for revenge after losing in Corvallis in heavy rains. The Pac Ten schedule is extremely difficult despite having five of the nine games at home. The four road games are all winnable but that doesnt mean the Beavers can win any of them as all can be considered swing games. Oregon St. has to host USC, California, Arizona St. and Oregon, the top four teams in the conference coming into the season. The good news is that they are all at Reser Stadium but the bad news is that all four contests are likely losses. The season finale at Hawaii could decide the postseason fate of the Beavers.

You can bet on Head coach Mike Riley took over the Beavers in 2001 following an 11-1 season and a Fiesta Bowl romp over Notre Dame. Since then, he has led Oregon St. to three minor bowl games and after last seasons late collapse, rumblings have started about his job security. A winning record is likely necessary to keep his job secure. The Beavers are 19-8 as a home favorite since 1999 but are coming off their first losing record in that spot last year. They have dropped five games straight up at home over the last two years after losing only four in the five previous years combined. The home slate is not kind this season with only three of their seven games being likely winners. Since they play 13 games and seven wins are needed for a bowl bid, a few upsets need to occur along the way for the Beavers to get back in the postseason picture.

No-Limit Texas Hold ‘Em Poker Tips and Strategy

Monday, December 24th, 2007

Being successful at the game of no-limit Texas Hold’em poker is no easy goal to accomplish. It requires both skill and mental prowess to be a poker playing pro. As with anything else, luck plays a small role, but the skilled player often is able to work their way around a run of bad luck with minimal effort. There are numerous resources available that poker players can use to help them better develop their skills at the game.

One thing that can help players that are playing the game of Texas HoldEm, is to always try to look other players at the table in the eye. Try to delve into who the other players are, study their faces, and become familiar with their quirks and mannerisms. Becoming familiar with your opponents will help you be less fearful of them, thereby making it easier for you to keep your mind on the game.

Professional players learn early on not to expect other players to play the same way you do. Every poker player will develop their own methods and strategies that work for them, and few players will play the game the same way.

Dont try to kid yourself when it comes to the game. Thinking and hoping you have a good hand will not make it so. Wishing you could win will not make you win the game. Make choices on what you know, not on what you think or hope. When you make assumptions, you will only be bluffing yourself, which will only help you to lose the game, not win it.

Good poker players learn how to adapt to change. No poker game will ever play the same way. Games will always change due to the human element involved and the luck of the cards. You have to be able to respond quickly to the unexpected. Learn to think on your feet, and be prepared to lose your bankroll, so you wont throw your game off if and when it happens.

The tried and true poker players usually say very little while at the tables. It is not that they are unfriendly, or rude, it is that they know that chatting can make them lose their focus on the game. Being silent helps you focus more on the game, which should greatly improve your game play.

Beware your egos role in the game of poker. Trying to protect your ego will get you nowhere fast in the world of poker. It will alienate your opponents, and, make you more of a target for experienced players who forgot to leave their ego at home that day. They will make it a point to prove that they are better than you.

Many players also find that it helps to not be too friendly with other poker players at their table. Not that they are trying to be rude, but letting personal issues in can interfere with your concentration, and impact game performance. When you decide you dont like another player, and make it your personal agenda to beat that one player, you will lose focus on your game and the real reason you are probably there, which is to win money. To ensure your profits, it is important to remain at a distance from other players, even your friends while at the tables.

Remember that there is no really right or wrong way to play the game. What works well for you, may not work for someone else, and vice versa. Always try to keep your focus only on the game, and always be prepared for the unexpected.

Bingo Machines Explained

Sunday, December 23rd, 2007

Bingo is a very popular game and its popularity is increasing by the day. Most land casinos offer bingo games and there are many Internet bingo game sites too. People prefer playing a game of bingo as it does not involve any complex rules. You do not have to employ numerous strategies or tactics to play the game of bingo.

Bingo is a simple and relaxing game. You have various bingo cards. Random calling of numbers takes place and you have to match the called numbers with the numbers on your bingo card. Casinos are bringing in bingo machines with slight modifications to cash in on the growing popularity of the game.

Rather bingo machines prove to be an improvisation of video slot machines. Some countries legally prohibit slot machines but allow people to play bingo games. Hence, casino operators are trying to bring in machines, which look like slot machines but function like bingo machines. In other words, games are similar to bingo.

Legal and common bingo machines have names like Triple Threat Bingo. These machines have drums spinning on the wheels. These drums have pictures of diamonds, cherries, and other familiar slots icons. You need to drop coins and push a button for the wheel to start spinning. If the cherries or other similar icons line up in a particular designated pattern, you win many dollars.

However, there are minor differences in these bingo machines to make them distinct from slots machines. Casino operators popularize them as bingo machines and hence print paper tickets for winners to cash out their winnings. They also do away with tokens or system of dropping money into a hopper.

Within four years, Maryland will get around 7,750 bingo machines while Pennsylvania and California will receive around 30,000 each. Such bingo machine manufacturing companies want to install the bingo machines at places wherever bingo is a regular game. Many churches and nonprofit organizations, social groups, and other similar setups organize bingo games to raise money for charity and other social causes. Bingo machines are in vogue now after a series of court rulings and decisions.

Some places impose specific laws with specifications for such bingo machines. The machines need to comply with certain government regulations. These regulations include special pull-tabs on the machines. These tabs deliver bingo tickets on pulling.

The other parts like a spinning reel, symbols like cherries and diamonds are similar to video slots machines. Winning combinations prompt the bingo machine to deliver a preprinted ticket. This ticket helps you cash your winnings. Essentially, these bingo machines resemble slots machines considerably.

Such immense resemblance of bingo machines to slots machines does not gel well with those opposing slots games. Although bingo is a casino game, it does not pose to be a serious gambling game as the game rules are very simple. Bingo is more a game of chance and you can hardly produce extensive effects on the results of the game.

However, the latest development across casinos of the world is to introduce such bingo machines. These machines satisfy legal laws of the country and at the same time offer game-setups similar to the slots. Most county laws offer permission for bingo games but provide very strict and stringent laws for slots games.

Under the present law, Director of Inspections and Permits approves electronic devices for using in bingo halls and at other charitable causes. However, the government can realize little money from such machines as charity organizations holding such bingo games do not pay any taxes on the money made from such bingo games.

How to Play Roulette

Saturday, December 22nd, 2007

Aside from the game of poker, roulette is probably one of the most recognized games in the world of gambling. The roulette table is the one you see in the center of a busy casino with people gathered on all sides and one front and center rolling a ball into the midst of the table and yelling for a seven or eleven. Roulette is a fast-paced, exciting game and usually brings high stakes success for those who play it well. However, it can also be intimidating to new players, so learning how to play the game of roulette is the first step in mastering this fun and exciting game.

You start by purchasing chips from the dealer. The chips in roulette are unique to each player. The values vary, but for the most part, each chip equals one dollar. You place your bet and then the game of roulette really gets going. The dealer spins the wheel and a ball is rolling along the outer edge of the rim in the opposite direction. The wheel is numbered 1-36 (half are red and half are black) and two green numbers, normally 0 and 00. Each number is pocketed for the ball to fall in and as the wheel comes to a halt, the ball lands in one of the pockets. The payout depends on where the ball fell and how many players have bet in that round.

It is said in gambling circles that roulette is a game best left for entertainment purposes and those looking to play for high stakes. The house advantages are plentiful and while the game of roulette is full of loud, brash excitement, novice players should take care to learn the ins and outs of different roulette betting strategies before entering a game. Watching other players, whether successful or not, can also help new players to get a grip on how roulette is played.

The same rules apply when playing in an online gambling room. Roulette is just as popular online as it is in an actual casino. Players should just take care to learn the rules and regulations of different sites and try just playing for entertainment purposes first. However, aside from those tips, the game of roulette is as popular as it is because it appeals to anyone. Roulette has room at the table for high rollers, novice gamblers and those just looking to have a little fun.
