Texas Hold’Em Poker Betting Strategies

Thursday, January 31st, 2008

There are many important things to learn about Texas Hold’Em before you play the game. One of the most crucial things you need to learn is a good basic strategy for betting. This is also a learning necessity with most other poker games and variations as well.

Fixed limit games are the most common types of Texas Hold’Em games. In fixed limit games, there are two different betting amounts, the low and the high betting amounts. For example, if you were playing Texas Hold’Em at a $10-$20 table, the first betting rounds all the bets would have to be made in $10 increments. So if the bet is currently at $10, you could only raise it to $20 or call. Dependent upon the game you are playing, at some point in the game the betting limit would double, so that all the bets would then be made at $20.

One basic strategy that can be used for betting in Texas Hold’Em is to try to focus on what cards you think the other players are holding in their hands. It will be important to watch the other players to get clues on what they may have or may be planning. One of the most important keys to betting successfully is to understand the other players at the table and try to place bets without them being able to guess your next move.

Most casinos limit the number of max raises to three or four a round. The number of allowed raises in each betting round should be a crucial element in planning your betting strategy.

A bet that is called a check is a nothing bet. Players make these bets when they don’t want to up the amount of their bet, but still want to remain in the game. If there have been no bets made during the round and play comes to you, you can check and pass play to the next player. A round of checks can be good for your poker play, assuming you have developed a good strategy. As always, you will need to study your hand well, and decide on the strength of the other players hands.

Sometimes using bluffs can be a boost to your poker betting strategy for Texas Hold’Em. It is important to remember that bluffs will work best when they are unexpected, if you bluff too often no one will fall for your tricks. On the flip side, if you never use bluffs and bet on a good hand, other players are more likely to pick up on the hand and fold rather than bet against you.

As with any poker game, you should remember that there will always be the element of luck involved, and that play may never go as you expect it to. Having a good betting strategy can tremendously help you in game play, but it is not the only part of the game you need to learn. The more you play the game, the better you should become at developing an effective strategy. Keep in mind that it is crucial to your success that you don’t become predictable in your play, as other players will be fast to pick up on it. Becoming a predictable player will make you lose far more often than you will win.

Casinos - Eliminate Your Enemy

Tuesday, January 29th, 2008

In order for you to effectively beat the casinos you must view them as your “competition”. If you don’t view the casinos as what they are, then how do you expect to beat them?

This is why the top players have VIP Hosts at their beck and call. They get phone calls at home offering fantastic incentives to lure the player back to the casino for complimentary suites, entertainment and anything the player can imagine.

It is the host’s job to come up to your table once you’re back in “their” house and encourage you to stay longer. With all of these wonderful “comps” it is hard to look at the casinos as the “enemy” but a few hours golfing doesn’t change what they are. Online and offline, they are your opponents and you shouldn’t forget that.

The biggest challenge that you will need to overcome is the advantage held by the casinos in the games that were designed to make them richer, not you! Pick your games wisely and make sure when you go into their house you are there to win and not just socialise with the “host of the party”.

They know how to work the players to spend more money. You need to learn how to get more from your host without wagering more than you feel comfortable in doing so.

If you have a host who keeps “popping” up at your games not only to be a friendly reminder of he’s there if you need him, but also to encourage you to bet more money maybe it is time to move to a less intrusive casino.

Just remember, you are a player who is there to win. Whatever comps you accrue along the way should just be treated as gravy that garnishes your overall winnings.

Ripped Off By an Online Casino?

Monday, January 28th, 2008

If the worst happens and you get ripped off by an online casino what do you do? First of all, contact the online casino operator themselves. It may have been an honest mistake or a flaw in their system and they might be only too grateful to hear from you so they can fix the problem so it doesn’t happen again. If this is the case then they should reimburse you any money lost and they might even give you a bonus as a gesture of good will.

If they don’t and they truly are a rogue casino out to rip off their customers then there are several watchdog organisation set up to help people who have had a bad experience with online gambling. It is in the interests of the online gambling industry in general to look after all their customers and potential customers. A little bad publicity can go along way in the gambling industry.

Online Players Association

The Online Players Association (OPA) is a watchdog group that also endorses online casinos, online gaming and online gambling sites. They ensure that sites they endorse are reputable and honest. They also mediate disputes between customers and the sites they endorse so that online gamblers can play in safety. The Online Players Association was formed in 2000 and has so far recouped over $100,000 in winnings and deposits from online casinos and other online gambling sites. Web Site

Interactive Gaming Council

The Interactive Gaming Council was formed in 1999 and is an industry organisation comprised of online gambling sites, online gambling portals, online casinos and any other business involved with internet gambling. One of their primary purposes is to set standards that members must adhere to. Their Seal of Approval system assures that members uphold the IGC’s etchical standards and also helps players resolve disputes by acting as a mediator between them and the online gambling company. Web Site

Off Shore Gaming Association

The Off Shore Gaming Association is a monitoring watchdog group that keeps an eye on the off shore gaming industry. They maintain a list of reputable online casinos. Web Site

Internet Gaming Commission

The Internet Gaming Commission, not to be confused with the Interactive Gaming Council who share the same acronym, is also a watchdog group that monitors online gambling sites like the online casinos. They also maintain a body of information about safe online gambling sites and have a dispute resolution department to mediate disputes between gamblers and online casinos. Web Site

Top Five Tips To Improve Your Poker

Sunday, January 27th, 2008

The explosion of online poker is luring more and more players to play the game on the internet far more than they would at a casino or in private games at a friend’s house.

Online poker is on the minds of many people on a daily basis. There are thousands of poker players logging on every hour of the day to the numerous available online poker rooms all eagerly awaiting their next fix.

Many of these players can be a great source of income for you if you are prepared to work at your game and become a better, stronger and more consistent player. You need to know what is required to become a fierce competitor every time you log on to your favourite poker website or pull up a chair in a nearby traditional casino.

Here are the top five tips that can help you improve your game and put more money into your account.

1. Practice patience. If you can’t exercise patience in your game, you should not be playing. Shrewd players will take your chips in no time at all so stick to the top 10 hands while you are improving your gameplay.

2. To become a better player nothing beats experience. You should try and play some poker and practice every day if possible, especially when preparing for a big game or tournament.

3. Don’t underestimate the importance of playing online. If you can win online, particularly in the tougher poker rooms and qualifying tournaments, then you can win live games at a casino.

4. Play ring games and tournaments. If you are going to be a successful poker player you need to be familiar with both types of games. The ring games (also known as cash games) will help you get to know some of the other players who you may come up against at a later date in a tournament scenario.

5. Read and watch everything you can on the subject of poker and find some good tutorial DVDs. Poker programmes dominate the late night satellite listings so whether it’s celebrities or poker professionals that interest you, tune in and watch how they play.

To summarise, if you want to become a better poker player there is no alternative to reading, watching and most important of all, playing poker! Never has there been so much money available to the average online player, how badly do you want it?

2006 World Cup: Italy Regains the Golden Ball Trophy

Saturday, January 26th, 2008

In a country where governments change as often as the seasons and corruption spreads from it’s local hoods up to it’s celebrities and politicians, there is one main stay that supercedes all else, and that is the Azzurri. Even amidst gambling and match fixing allegations in Italy’s premier league, Serie A, the nation comes together to support it’s national team for the World Cup and nothing else matters. It is the rock that all of its countrymen can count on every four years as the Italian National Team always performs well in the World Cup and makes the country proud. This year is no different as Italy has what it takes to take home this years Cup.

When looking at the roster for this year’s squad, immediate thoughts are of the names that are not there. Names that have represented the country for so many years and so many World Cups. Most notably, Baggio, Maldini, Vieri, and DiBiagio. Instead, new head coach Marcello Lippi has chosen to go a little younger. He has high hopes that this will be a break out tournament for many players. Included in those hopefuls are Luca Toni and Alberto Gilardino. Toni led the Serie A in goals with 31 which were far and above anyone else. At 6’4” and with all world player Francesco Totti feeding him balls there is hope that he will be a dark horse winner of the “Golden Boot”, which is awarded to the World Cups leading goal scorer, following in the footsteps of his fellow countryman Toto Schilacci in 1998. One of the criticisms of Italian teams in the past has been the fact that they seem to lack the motivation and fitness come Cup time. That will not be the case this year as Lippi is known for his penchant for hard working players and his ability to motivate them. He is one of the most highly decorated coaches in Serie A history winning 3 League Championships and a Champions League during his time at Juventes. However, with the scandals surrounding him and his former club, this may be his only shot at a World Cup title.

While Italy will always be mentioned amongst the favorites in the World Cup, this year not many actually believe they can pull it off which is a rare perception. The last time there was such little hype surrounding the Azzurri was in 1982. That bodes well for Italian backers as they went on to win the World Cup in 1982 behind the magical feet of Paulo Rossi. Currently, Italy is listed at 10/1 at most sports books meaning that a simple $100 bet would turn into a $1000 if Italy can capture the Golden Ball which is awarded to the winner of the World Cup. They have all the right pieces as they are strong defensively up the middle, as always, with goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon and veteran stars Alessandro Nesta and team captain Fabio Cannavaro. Now that they have legitimate goal scorers, this soccer tradition rich nation will take Germany by storm. When betting on this team in the first round: Look for Italy to win outright against Ghana as this is a must win in this year’s group of death. The best line out there for this one is -200 and can be found at various sports books. After that happens, the money play will be on the draw when facing the Czech Republic and the United States as the Italians have always been defensive minded and very smart in terms of what it takes to get through to stage 2 of the World Cup Finals. A win over Ghana and two draws would give them 4 points which would be enough to advance and that is all the first round is about. After this years win, Italy will have 4 World Cop Trophies and will rank second in the world trailing Brazil by one.

Texas Hold’em And The Statistics Behind It

Friday, January 25th, 2008

What does Statistics mean: Statistics is the science and practice of developing knowledge through the use of empirical data expressed in quantitative form. It is based on statistical theory which is a branch of applied mathematics. Within statistical theory, randomness and uncertainty are modelled by probability theory. Because one aim of statistics is to produce the “best” information from available data, some authors consider statistics a branch of decision theory. …

What is Texas Hold’em: Texas hold ‘em (or simply hold ‘em or holdem) is the most popular of the community card poker games. It is the most popular poker variant played in casinos in the western United States, and its no-limit form is used in the main event of the World Series of Poker (abbreviated WSOP), widely recognized as the world championship of the game.

Texas Hold’em involves a hefty dose of statistics and math. No other poker game draws much on statistics to calculate the odds than Texas Hold’em does. Below are some basic steps to help you with your Texas Hold’em statistics.

Texas Hold’em Statistics - The Concepts Involved

In Texas Hold’em statistics, there are four things you need to consider - the outs, the pot odds, bet odds, implied odds. All these four concepts will help you determine your Texas Hold’em statistics and chances of winning.

The outs in Texas Hold’em statistics are the cards let in the deck. In Texas Hold’em statistics, the pot odds are your chances of raking the pot by computing the current size of the pot and your next call. Bet odds, on the other hand, in Texas Hold’em statistics are the percentage you get when you analyze the number of players who call a raise. And implied odds in Texas Hold’em statistics are odds that you get when you assume the result of the betting for the remaining hands.

Texas Hold’em Statistics - Outs and Pot Odds

The most common Texas Hold’em statistics terms you will meet and use are outs and pot odds. These two are the starting point for those who want to learn more about Texas Hold’em statistics. Calculating your odds is a simple case of division. To get your Texas Hold’em statistics, simply divide the number of outs you have with the number of cards left in the deck. The result would be the Texas Hold’em statistics percentage chance for you to make one of those outs.

At pre-flop, you will be dividing your outs by 50, 47 after the flop, and 46 after the turn. This is how you calculate your Texas Hold’em statistics. So for example, you have a pocket pair of Jacks but the flop does not show another Jack, to find out what your Texas Hold’em statistics and chances of getting a Jack on the turn, you only need to determine your number of outs and the number of cards in the deck. There are two more Jacks of the 47 cards left in the deck. So your Texas Hold’em statistics are 2 to 47 or 4.26%.

Pot odds in Texas Hold’em statistics is as easy to compute as outs. Just compare your chance of winning to the size of the pot and you should be able to get your Texas Hold’em statistics for pot odds. For example, you are playing a $5/$10 pot with Jack-10 facing one opponent on the turn. Your pocket shows a straight draw from a 2/5/9/Q board and you only have one river card left to see if you’re going to make it. An 8 or a King will see you through so your Texas Hold’em statistics for outs is 8 (four 8s and 4 Ks left in the deck) and 46 invisible cards. 8 to 46 are your Texas Hold’em statistics and your only opponent bets $10. If you bet, you could win $200 and since $200 (the size of the pot) divided by $10 is 20, you have twenty times more chances of winning based on your Texas Hold’em statistics. Your Texas Hold’em statistics for pot odds say that it isn’t a bad idea to call.

Texas Hold-em can be a lot of fun. Please always play with the intention of having fun and leave the heavy gambling to the pros. Many lives have been destroyed because of addiction to gambling.

10 Reasons for Gambling

Wednesday, January 23rd, 2008

Most discussions about what motivates a person to gamble usually will start by comparing gambling to life. And yes life is a gamble every time you breathe it could be your last. Getting out of bed in the morning can lead to the last thing you ever do, yet we all get out of bed almost every day. But casino gambling gives us an option we don’t normally have in life; we can bet on the outcome of things, we get to choose how much to risk and when to risk it. Gambling is defined by the Dictionary as the following: To play games of chance for money or some other stake, or to take a risk in order to gain some advantage.

Here are the top 8 answers we received:

Vacation:

Las Vegas in the last 10 years has become a popular place to bring the family. Las Vegas has many attractions for family fun. And in the evening after the kids go to sleep there is also plenty of adult entertainment.

To win and become rich:

Of all the people interviewed these people seemed to be the least crazy. They came to the casino with hopes of getting rich and being able to quit there jobs and live the good life, but they also know that the chances are good they would all have to get up Monday morning and return to work.

Money problems:

it seems there are many people who believe they can fix there money problems with gambling. Most of the people who claimed that money problems were the reason for them gambling lost more money gambling then they originally owed and had they not gambled would not have been so bad off according to them. Of this group none said they had managed to win the money they needed.

A great place to hold a wedding:

Apparently having a wedding at some of the larger casinos is Las Vegas or Atlantic City is becoming popular, apparently the casinos will give you an excellent price on the wedding hall and rooms for your guests, of course they do this with the knowledge that the guests will spend money in the casino so giving a good rate n the wedding is in there best interest

This is how they make a living:

I found that these people and the ones who had money problems were extremely different. These people at least knew how to gamble, most of them had many years experience and some were regular tournament players with at least 1 win under there belts.

For a bachelor party:

The number of people that gave this response makes it very clear that going to a casino for a bachelor party if definitely gaining in popularity.

To get out of the house:

I noticed almost all of the people in his category were all males and were all married for more them 10 years and had kids. They said they like to come to the casino on average about once a month stay for a few hours, play some games and then head home.

To have fun:

These people had the right idea, but I could not believe how low on the list they scored. Having fun should be the number 1 reason to gamble. They only wanted to have some fun take a little trip to the Casino, have some free drinks, play some games and if they win, good and if not that’s ok also. These people came down with a certain amount they could lose and not be upset or broke and they stick to it. These people all seemed to be reaching there goal not one of them was complaining about how close they came to hitting big or what if they had just done this or that.

Nevada Casinos

Tuesday, January 22nd, 2008

Nevada, in particular, Las Vegas, is the first place most people think of when you mention the word “casino.” This state is known for gambling more than just about anything else. However, there is more to Nevada than gambling and the fine Nevada casinos.

The Hoover Dam, Pyramid Lake, Lake Tahoe and the vast desert spaces all add to Nevada’s pull as a tourist destination. Its capital, Carson City, is a town full of historical significance and of course, the lure of Las Vegas as a top travel destination, all add to the appeal of Nevada.

Casinos are plentiful in Nevada, with the major concentration of them being in Las Vegas. Almost all of Nevada’s casinos feature a large number of slot machines, table games, dining and entertainment options, with some more upscale than others. Nevada casinos are unmatched in terms of quality and most casinos around the world model their facilities after those found in Nevada.

Starting in Las Vegas, the higher end casinos include: The Aladdin Resort
