Poker Game Rules

Sunday, May 18th, 2008

Poker is the name given to a number of card games where players wager on the strength of the cards they hold. Poker is a game that involves a communal “pot” consisting of the players’ wagers which is awarded to the poker player who either holds the highest ranking hand or makes a wager which goes unmatched by his or her opponents.

At PokerStars, our Seven Card Stud and Omaha poker games are played in both “high-only” and “high-low split” form. In these high-low games, the best five-card poker hand for high wins half the pot, and the best qualifying five-card hand for low wins the other half. Our Texas Hold’em poker games are always played high-only with a No Limit, Pot Limit and Limit option. For a detailed breakdown of hand rankings, visit our poker hand ranks page.

All poker games begin with some forced wager over which poker players compete. In Seven Card Stud, there are two forced wagers, an ante and a bring-in. In Texas Hold’em and Omaha, the forced wagers are a small blind and a big blind. In any basic poker game, players strategically wager using a number of actions available to them. The actions are as follows:

1. CHECK - If there is no wager on the current betting round, a player may check. The act of checking passes the action to the next poker player immediately clockwise from him or her. A check does not forfeit interest in the pot, only the current right to bet. If all players check during a round of betting, the round is considered complete.

2. BET - If there is no wager on the current betting round, a player may bet. If a player bets, the poker player immediately clockwise from him or her (and any subsequent poker players) may fold, raise, or call.

3. FOLD - The act of folding forfeits all interest in the pot. A player who folds is not required or allowed to wager any further money for the current poker game.

4. CALL - If there has been a wager on the current round of poker play, a player may call. The act of calling requires the player to match the current bet made by his or her opponent(s).

5. RAISE - If there has been a wager on the current betting round, a player may raise. The act of raising requires the poker player to match the current bet, and make a greater one. All subsequent players are required to call the raise or raise again (”re-raise̶ ;) to maintain interest in the pot.

On each betting round, betting continues until the person immediately counter clockwise the last bettor or raiser acts. When this person acts, the next poker round begins, or the hand is complete.

When the last bet or raise on the final betting round is called, the “showdown” occurs. This is when it is determined who wins the pot, as players show their hands one-by-one. It may be the case that there is no showdown. This occurs when a player bets or raises, and no active players choose to call the player’s bet (in other words, all players fold). In this case, the player doing the betting or raising wins the full amount of the pot.

Basic Poker Play: Table Stakes and All-In

Basic poker play is typically played “table stakes”, meaning only the chips in play at the beginning of each hand may be used throughout the hand. The table stakes rule has an application called the “All-In” rule, which states that a player cannot be forced to forfeit a poker hand because the player does not have enough chips to call a bet. A player who does not have enough chips to call a bet is declared All-In. The player is eligible for the portion of the pot to the point of his final wager. All further action involving other players takes place in a “side pot”, which is ineligible to the All-In player.

Poker has hundreds of variants. PokerStars features the most popular casino and poker games in the world. For more information about these poker variants, visit our Poker Room page.

Party Poker Bonus Guide

Friday, May 16th, 2008

When playing online, you want to take advantage of the bonuses and promotions the site offers. A deposit bonus is an additional amount of money added to your account along with your deposit, offered by the site as an incentive for you to play there. Bonuses are a good way to experiment with a given site, see how you like it using some “house money” to help you determine if it is the site for you. Party Poker, the largest online poker site around, also offers some of the biggest and most popular bonuses.

Here’s a quick guide to some of the bonuses you can take advantage of on Party Poker. Please keep in mind that while these codes are good as of this writing, it is possible for codes to expire.

The “Tell-a-friend” program:

Click the “tell a friend” menu on the top of the Party Poker screen. You will be directed to a form to fill out where you can input information about one or more friends you think would be interested in having an account on Party Poker. When they open their account and put in the bonus code TAF15, you’ll get a $50 bonus and your friend will get a $25 bonus.

Sign-up bonuses:

When you sign up for Party Poker, the code BONUSCASH will yield a 20 percent bonus on your first deposit, up to $100. Many websites with links to PartyPoker have their own individual sign-up codes that yield the same bonus, though they prefer you get to PartyPoker the first time through a link on their site.

The bonus code 25DB will get you an extra $25 on your first deposit.

Other bonuses:

The Party Poker bonus code BONUS4U will yield $25 on any deposit.

PLIST33 will get you a free entry into a Party Poker Million qualifying tournament.

You can also get Party Poker reload bonuses as a reward for continuous play on their site. These are often referred to as “loyalty bonuses.” These bonuses will appear from time to time in a pop-up window as you log on. Most of these bonuses will be a percentage (usually around 15 percent) of the amount you deposit. These, as most bonuses, tend to be “restricted.” A restricted bonus means that you have to play a predetermined amount of raked hands (usually around 150) before the bonus will be released into your account.

In addition to traditional bonuses, Party Poker also offers “Party Points.” You don’t have to input any special codes to get these, simply play as a registered user on the site and these points will accumulate all by themselves. You can use these Party Points to enter certain tournaments, including qualifiers for big money tournaments, or exchange them for poker-related merchandise.

The important thing to remember is that bonuses and promotions are there for you to take advantage of. Sites want you to use them because they want your business, so go ahead and oblige them. Have fun and good luck.

Tournament History Worth Considering

Saturday, May 10th, 2008

Before filling out your tournament bracket it may be worth your while to take a look at some of the history of the NCAA Tournament. Let’s begin with the past 5 Champions as often times looking back too far can be a hindrance. Three of the last 5 Champions have come out of the ACC with North Carolina beating Illinois last year, Maryland defeating Indiana in 2002, and Duke winning over Arizona in 2001. Before North Carolina reemerged as National Champions last season the Big East collected titles in 2003 and 2004 with Syracuse and UConn. Picking an ACC team or a Big East team should be a safe bet to win it all.

But don’t rule out the Big 10. A Big 10 team has made the title game 3 of the last 6 years with Michigan State winning it all in 2000. In a year when the Big 10 was the strongest conference from top to bottom, a Big 10 team could be strong pick to win it all. If we are using history, we can rule out the Big 12. The Big 12 has only had one team make the championship game in the last 5 years with Kansas losing to Syracuse in 2003 and Kansas could be the Big 12’s best chance this year, but it’s hard to know how such a young team will react under the pressure of the NCAA Tournament. I’m ruling a Big 12 champion out.

When you’re picking your Final Four, you may want to strongly consider having a 3 seed, as 3 seeds have made it to the Final Four 3 of the last 5 years with a pair of 3 seeds making it in 2003. Including 2 seeds in your Final Four is a must, as at least one 2 seed has made the Final Four 4 of the last 5 NCAA Tournaments. Surprisingly 5 seeds aren’t bad picks for the Final Four either as three 5 seeds have made the National Semifinals 3 of the last 6 years including Michigan State who made it as a 5 seed a year ago. The trouble with taking the 5 seed out is risking the chance that they could be knocked out in the first round by the infamous 12 seed pulling off an upset.

All 5 of the schools with the most national titles are in this year’s tournament field. UCLA leads the group with 11 all-time titles and the Bruins are enjoying their highest seed in a number of years. Kentucky and Indiana follow UCLA with 7 and 5 titles respectively, but with Indiana as a 6 seed and Kentucky as an 8, I don’t see either team adding to their totals this year. North Carolina and Duke cap off the top 5 with 4 national championships for the Tarheels and 3 for the Blue Devils. It could be the most storied teams who have the best chance to win the 2006 Tournament. UCLA, Duke, and North Carolina have legitimate shots at cutting down the nets in Indianapolis.

Notice that we haven’t talked about any 4 seeds in our list of Champions. Although Louisville made it to the Final Four as a 4 seed last season, 4 seeds aren’t safe bets. In fact a 13 seed defeating a 4 has been the big first round shocker over the last 7 years. Oklahoma pulled off an upset over Arizona back in 1999 as a 13 seed. In 2001 a pair of 13 seeds defeated 4’s, and unlucky 13’s were able to knock off 4 seeds in 2002, 2003, and 2005 as well. You may want to strongly consider finding a 13 over a 4 upset in this year’s NCAA Tournament.

History doesn’t always repeat itself, but I think these are a few strong leads to consider.

Texas Hold’em Poker Tip….Don’t Go Nuts

Friday, May 9th, 2008

Texas Hold-em can be a lot of fun. Please always play with the intention of having fun and leave the heavy gambling to the pros. Many lives have been destroyed because of addiction to gambling.

A message about gambling: Gambling (or betting) is any behavior involving risking money or valuables (making a wager or placing a stake) on the outcome of a game, contest, or other event in which the outcome of that activity depends partially or totally upon chance or upon one’s ability to do something.

Texas Hold’em is a kind of card game that uses five-card combinations from a selection of seven cards. Texas Hold’em poker is relatively easy to learn but the details and the complexities involved make it hard to master.

In order to win, you need the best 5-card hand combination. There are a lot of Texas Hold’em poker tips that you can learn if you want to improve your game. Below are some of these winning Texas Hold’em poker tips.

Texas Hold’em Poker Tip 1

After the flop, you can see five of the seven total cards you need in order to create your hand. It is at this stage that you can determine how good your hand is going to be during the final round. A Texas Hold’em poker tip would be stay only beyond the flop if you have a strong hand. Another Texas Hold’em poker tip is to see if you have a draw to a potentially winning hand or good reason to believe that your opponents may fold when you bet in the next round.

Texas Hold’em Poker Tip 2

It is a basic Texas Hold’em poker tip to never continue beyond the flop if you don’t have any of those diverse possibilities mentioned above. If the pot promises great payoff and your odds of making a hand is quite good, a Texas Hold’em poker tip is to stick with it. Another Texas Hold’em poker tip is to stay for the turn or the river if you have a strong pair, a decent side-card, a kicker, a straight, or flush draw.

Texas Hold’em Poker Tip 3

An A/K is a terrific combination. But a Texas Hold’em poker tip would be to start playing aggressively only if you get either an ace or a king in the flop.

Texas Hold’em Poker Tip 4

In poker, being the last player gives you the edge. But what if you’re the first player? A Texas Hold’em poker tip would be to play few hands. This passes the weight of the action to other players who will be the ones to make the calls, bets, or raises.

Texas Hold’em Poker Tip 5

One of the most important Texas Hold’em poker tips is to always consider the community cards since these are the only cards that you can see. Try to gauge how these cards will interact with your two hidden pocket cards. This Texas Hold’em poker tip will help you make a good hand.

Roulette System: How you can win Roulette easily and automatically

Friday, May 2nd, 2008

In this article, we will discuss on “A personal interview with the FAST Roulette System’s creator, Raymond Lai.”

Q: Hi Raymond, thanks for joining us in this interview. Before we talk about your FAST Roulette System, tell us a little about your background.

Raymond: It really all started with the roulette game. I first started working in casinos , in charge of roulette table and studying the mechanism of roulette system while under the supervision of professional roulette player. After spending thousands of dollars buying other “so called infallible Roulette System” in the early 2000’s, and testing thousands and thousands of randomly generated spins as well as real life spins, I discovered that most of roulette systems in the market are not promising acceptable winning roulette results over a long term. I first identified all the winning roulette tips that can help players to win consistently. After a couple of year’s success with it I wrote a “101roulettewinningtips” manual about my experience with the 101roulettewinningtips and how others could do it–which also sold well. In fact you can still buy it today. Then I went on to sell it over the internet in the mid-2003 and sales increased massively.

Q: Tell us how you developed your FAST Roulette System.

Raymond: Well, for several years in the early 2000’s I had been looking for ways to turn the roulette game to my advantage, and I studied a lot of material on theory of roulette system. It was an interesting period. You wouldn’t believe the weird, off the wall theories out there. I even read one book that claimed several thousand people could ‘will’ the numbers they wanted through Numerology.

Q: Strange solutions indeed. How did you figure out your own system then?

Raymond: Through a lot of hard thought and lateral thinking. It helped that I was a brilliant mathematician and statistician, and some of my analytical mathematical abilities might have rubbed off me! When I found the “eureka” solution that seemed to work, I spent a further couple of years researching and checking it. Although at that time I had computers that might have sped the whole research process up, the FAST Roulette System doesn’t actually work on generated or computed numbers. So it had to be done by hand. Took a while.

Q: Why is your so system different that you couldn’t use a computer?

Raymond: I found that despite the blinding speed and computational abilities of modern systems even back then, no-one had actually come up with a way to predict a win from past draws at 100% confidence level. This was the breakthrough for me. It simply told me this: That no-one can actually predict winning numbers through analysing and extrapolating past results. And when I realized this, it made my own system solution much more valuable as a result. So, although it took a while to figure out, suddenly I had found the ‘missing link’ to winning roulette.

Q: If you say that no-one can predict a win, how does your system work then?

Raymond: The system works mainly by eliminating the millions of number combinations that won’t win. For example, you’ll never see 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 appearing consequently in a roulette game… that is pretty unlikely. And there are countless other losing combinations too. My FAST Roulette System identifies these bad boys, giving the winnable combinations preference. Easy–once you know how!

Q. How is the FAST Roulette System different from other systems out there, like Martingale?

Raymond: Martingale just works on doubling after a loss. It doesn’t make any distinction on your table limit, so most times you are wasting your money on the long streaks. With the FAST Roulette System, you do not focus on predicting the winning numbers. That makes it different from almost every other system I’ve studied. (And if you find a system that works like the FAST Roulette System, you can bet your bottom dollar that is was adapted from mine!)

Q: OK, that sounds good. But has anyone won with your system?

Raymond: Yes indeed. The most recent was an European couple who won over EURO$28,000.00 using it. Many people have covered their costs, and as well won smaller amounts up to $50,000.00. One of the main advantages with my system is that you can be winning big amount fast WHILE you are unlikely to lose over the long term–as it eventually will.

Q: Is playing long term part of your system? Why can’t we win big over a long term?

Raymond: What many folks don’t realize is that when a system like mine win fast (and this is why I call it “FAST Roulette System” because to my knowledge I’m the only system that admits that fact), the next best thing is to play strtegically over the long term. So what you’re doing here is win fast and big while you’re using the winning money that belong to the casino to win over the long term. The FAST Roulette System puts you in the line. The best thing about my system is that you don’t have to wait many hours to win big money- as one academic predicted for other systems. It could be just a small number of spins before you have sufficient money to play long term.

Q: So we might have to be patient? That’s hard to do!

Raymond: Many people don’t have the patience to keep going, and going, even when they are winning small but the real winners will persist.

Q: I was going to bring that up, Raymond. Is there another way we can win roulette quicker with your system?

Raymond: Sure. Just increase the maximum bet. For example, when I play online, I bet $5. My chance of winning is very much less - not very good at all in fact - if I were only able to play at maximum bet of $50.

Q: Are you saying you’ve got to have a higher bankroll to win big.

Raymond: Definitely not. Every bet using FAST Roulette system gives you a better chance than any other system I know. But the more you bet in each game, the higher your chances become. So if you can’t afford many bets each game, you should maybe save and play then when you have sufficient bankroll. But I emphasis to everybody playing any roulette game at all–make sure it is money you can afford to lose. Because it might take weeks before you make it back or get a major win.

Q: What do you say to those people who think roulette is unpredictable?

Raymond: Haven’t heard the word “unpredictable” for a while! Not many people really understand how the roulette game really works. If you ever think you’re not going to win at roulette, think again.

Q: From your website and what you’re saying here, you sure don’t sound like someone trying to sell your system. You’ve covered the downside of playing too.

Raymond: I’m a highly ethical person - So it’s really important to me that people get the right balance of information to play right. That’s why I offer guaranteed refund if you are not satisfied with the system.

Q: Is this why you use the term “100% guaranteed refund” a lot in your website?

Raymond: Sure. Most other systems out there are highly optimistic about you winning, but they’re mainly based on guesswork and wrongly-calculated maths. I believe mine is the first roulette system that guaranteed you almost 100% win if you follow what you can and can’t do with a system.

Q: Thanks for your time here. Is there a last word you want to say?

Raymond: Yes, I’d like to say to all future FAST Roulette System owners this… take a good look at my system. Don’t spend your last cent on playing. And above all, keep going - - even when your wins are small or take a while to come through. You WILL eventually triumph!

Q: Thanks! Readers can see my FAST Roulette System website here: http://www.101roulettewinningtips.com

#68 Oklahoma St. Cowboys Preview

Thursday, May 1st, 2008

Spring practices are in the books and fall camps will be here before you know it so that means getting an early jump on the 2006 NCAA football season. Knowing the teams now will save you time in August and Matt Fargo is here to help you get a grasp of what to expect this upcoming year. We go from worst to first in this 2006 College Football Preview.

#68 – Oklahoma St. Cowboys 4-7 SU; 3-7 ATS

Fargo’s Take The Mike Gundy no huddle offense hit a lot of snags in its first year of inception but that was to be expected. With a season in the books, the Cowboys should be more efficient on offense and they really have no where to go but up. The offense is extremely young still with just two senior starters so we might be looking at 2007 as the year for the ultimate breakthrough. After a promising 3-0 start last year thanks to a cupcake schedule, Oklahoma St. dropped seven of its final eight games with only two of those defeats being competitive games. The youth showed in the game against Texas as they had a 19-point lead only to lose by that same amount. The defense was just as bad as the offense and with only five starters returning, there isn’t much hope of a huge revitalization. A soft slate will lead to a similar start as last year but a similar ending to the season is possible as well.

Returning Starters on Offense – 8 It’s hard to become cohesive on offense when three different quarterbacks are leading the team. That was the case in Stillwater in 2005 as youth and injuries to the quarterbacks hurt the offense. Sophomore Bobby Reid did not put up huge numbers as a freshman but he is the likely starter by default. Word is that he has a renewed confidence but his spring practices did not show a whole lot. He does have some great talent around him led by receiver D’Juan Woods, a consensus preseason All-Big XII pick. Woods will have help on the other side from North Carolina transfer Adarius Bowman. The running game is in good shape with sophomore Mike Hamilton, who gained 961 yards on 5.0 ypc as a freshman. The offensive line is fairly experienced and small but that is a good fit with this offense.

Returning Starters on Defense – 5 The Cowboys finished 95th in both total defense and scoring defense and most of that damage came after the first three cupcake games. The defense yielded 31.3 ppg on the season but that jumped to 40.1 ppg in the final eight games as it allowed fewer than 34 points only once. Like the offense, the defense is extremely young with only three senior starters and only five seniors on the two-deep chart. The rushing defense was horrid last season, allowing 205.4 ypg on 4.9 ypc and the defensive line is where all three seniors are located. If those rushing numbers don’t get better, the unit could take another huge step backwards. The linebackers and secondary are very raw with the only returning starter being strong safety Donovan Woods, a converted quarterback from last season.

Schedule As mentioned earlier, the Cowboys will likely be 3-0 once again this season with games against Missouri St., Arkansas St. and Florida Atlantic starting off the year. From there, things could get ugly starting with three straight road games at Houston, Kansas St. and Kansas. The worst part is that those are all likely losses yet are the three remaining easy road games on the schedule. Five of the last six games are against teams that will be contending in their respective divisions in the Big XII with a much improved Baylor team being the other contest. The game against the Bears is at home and is the only swing game in the final eight meaning a 4-8 record is likely unless there are upsets along the way.

You can bet on… Former head coach Les Miles left the cupboard pretty bare for Gundy and he is doing his best to get things headed in the right direction. This was one of the youngest teams in the country last year and the Cowboys are ranked 88th in experience ratings this season. Give them one more year and we could see a resurgence. Oklahoma St. went 0-4 ATS as a road dog last season and is now 8-20 against the number when receiving points on the road. The Cowboys will be in that role in five of their six away games this season, the game at Arkansas St. being the lone exception. With such a youthful team, winning on the road is near impossible while keeping those games close is nearly as difficult.
