Winning at Slots, The Best Strategies

Sunday, November 30th, 2008

Casino gambling is often played with a gambling strategy in mind. This is however not normally the case with slot machines. Many players simply pump in their credits, pull on the arm – or in the case of a virtual casino, hit the spin button and hope to hit the jackpot.

But actually there’s much more to winning at slots than simply hitting spin.

Firstly, you need to realize that it’s not all about the slots jackpot. Putting your hopes on hitting the jackpot will be costly and not to mention disappointing. Although it’s true that the jackpot will hit soon or later, don’t expect to hit it in the first couple of rounds you play. This would be extremely lucky!

Secondly, know when to stop. This means knowing when to stop whether you’re winning or losing. There is no use beating a dead horse. Therefore if your machine is as cold as ice, it’s time to move on to another machine J

Thirdly, try to mix up you bets – max betting will ensure that you get the biggest possible payout for every winning combination but it will only drain your funds quickly if you don’t win in the early rounds of your game. So try placing a few smaller bets and when you feel the machine is about to hit a winning combination, bet big…

World Cup 2006 Preview - Italy

Saturday, November 29th, 2008

Outright Odds: 10/1

Group E Winners: 10/11

Italy are the grand masters of heart-breaking tragedy when it comes to major finals. In all three World Cups held in the 1990s, the Italians bowed out on penalties, including Roberto Baggio’s infamous miss against Brazil in the 1994 final.

They don’t fare a lot better in Europe either. With Euro 2000 in the bag, opponents France equalised four minutes into injury time and went on to win, while Euro 2004 saw Italy bow out in the group stage when Sweden and Denmark drew 2-2, the only result which would send both teams through at the Italians’ expense.

Italy have made failure when it matters the most an art form and are likely to provide plenty of high drama at this summer’s finals. However, they tend to bring it upon themselves more often than not.

In a move that would make wheeler-dealer manager Barry Fry proud, Italy coach Marcelo Lippi used an incredible 36 players in qualifying so it is arguable he has not yet found his best starting eleven. Howeever, after 10 qualifying matches in which no player appeared in more than eight matches, Italy may not have the stability to see them triumph in Germany.

Italy are notorious slow starters in major finals which will not help matters in what is potentially the toughest of all the groups. In qualifying they lost an early match in Slovenia and could come unstuck against unknown quantity Ghana in their opening match.

Following a minor blip in qualifying the Italians remained unbeaten for the rest of the campaign, proving they are solid if not spectacular and topped the group by five points. There is no value in them winning Group E at 10/11 or qualifying from it at heavy odds-on but given their history of being “there or thereabouts” they are likely to secure a spot in the last 16.

Their success will come from a watertight defence marshalled by Fabio Cannavaro, who missed the embarrassing defeat to South Korea in the 2002 finals and Alessandro Nesta.

Lippi also has a headache in who to play in attack. Veterans Alessandro Del Piero and Christian Vieri may give way to AC Milan’s Alberto Gilardino and Luca Toni of Fiorentina, who netted four goals in eight qualifying matches. Real Madrid’s Antonio Cassano is another option.

Recommended Bet:

An unpredictable line-up and a history of doing “just enough” to progress through the tournament rather than winning in style means there is more value in opposing Italy than backing them at odds-on to win the group or qualify from it. Their final match against the Czech Republic could end all square if a point is all that’s required for both sides to make the last 16.

2006 Will Be Breakout Year for Lamar Odom

Friday, November 28th, 2008

Lamar Odom has always been a good player, albeit at times an enigma, but I think it’s fair to say that his name does not come up when discussing the league elite. That could change in 2006 because if the Lakers first two games are any indication, the 6-foot-10 shooting forward out of Rhode Island appears to be on a mission.

After just two games, Odom is averaging 28 points, 11 rebounds, and 7.5 assists per game for the Kobe-less Lakers.

In Tuesday’s 114-106 opening night win over Phoenix, Odom played 44 minutes dropping 34 and 13 on the Suns including seven points of a 13-1 run midway through the third quarter that put things away for the Lakeshow. Odom also played excellent defense in holding “The Matrix” Shawn Marion to just 16 points and helping in the paint.

On Wednesday, the Lakers (who are notoriously bad in the second of back-to-backs) traveled to Golden State and blew out the Warriors 110-98. Odom had 22/9/9 in a workmanlike 33 minutes and managed to get everyone involved on the offensive end including Ronny Turiaf 23/8 and Luke Walton 15/6.

Odom has always had the talent. He was lost for the first four years of his career with a bad Clipper outfit where he was often hampered with injuries. Odom went to Miami in 2003 as a restricted free-agent signing and was poorly used by the directionless Heat. He was sent packing back to LA the following year as part of the mega deal involving Shaquille O’Neal.

Odom has not always been a favorite of Laker Coach Phil Jackson as he was slow to embrace the triangle offense and basically lost trying to adapt his own game around that of Kobe. He showed signs in the second half of last year helping lead the Lakers from near oblivion at the halfway mark to a playoff berth.

I was fortunate enough to get to know Lamar a little during his college time at UNLV. We watched the Tyson-Holyfield ear bite fiasco and an NBA draft at a mutual friend’s house and I found him to be extremely sharp with a great sense of humor. He was also humble and sincere, rare qualities in today’s athlete.

Odom lost a six-month-old son during the off season, a tragedy no parent should have to endure. I’m not qualified or bold enough to say that this would account for a more mature and focused Lamar Odom but I would have to think that it put a lot of things in their true perspective.

Lamar Odom and the Lakers are both off to fast starts. Is this a breakout year for Lamar Odom? I hope so.

Online Casinos Are Much Cleaner

Thursday, November 27th, 2008

You have to admit, online casinos have such more appeal these days. With Avian Flu scares, SARS and other epidemics, who wouldn’t rather pull up a chair or flop down in a recliner at home?

The appeal of Brick and Mortar casinos will forever be unmatched as a favourite pastime activity, but what about during flu season? Do you really want to be in a place that is open 24 hours and is never exposed to a good overall washdown? Without being too obsessive about hygiene, it is just something to think about.

The online casinos certainly offer a cleaner approach to things. For example, you can log into your favourite online casino room and never have to worry about touching the chips that your opponent has just sneezed all over.

If you are a non-smoker, you don’t have to make conversation with everyone at the blackjack table while they “smoke you out” of the game. You can get up and go to the bathroom and the dealer will wait. You can stand up or sit down at the craps table and no one will interrupt your roll by throwing their money down on the table as the dice are in motion.

The online alternatives are sterile clean. Have you ever noticed how the traditional casinos have all of the gold and glass smudged with fingerprints? It makes you stop and consider how many fingers have actually done the smudging and whether they were clean in the first place!

Online gambling is definitely the more sanitary choice. You have more gaming choices than ever before and can interact with players from all over the world without having to share their germs. Where else can you find entertainment in a smoke-free, people-free, germ-free environment? Nowhere else but in an online casino!

Online Gambling - In A Nutshell - Part Ii

Sunday, November 23rd, 2008

One of the best ways a novice gambler can learn to play his or her games of interest is on the Internet. First of all there are numerous sites that offer the opportunity to play games for free online. Secondly, participating in these games allows a new player to learn without risking any money. Additionally, frequent play without the pressures of play for money games allows one to concentrate on how to play, and to eventually develop the skills and strategies necessary to win in games with money at stake.

One thing a novice on-line poker player should keep in mind when playing for free is that just as you can develop into a skilled player by learning to play poker without monetary pressures, so, too, can you develop bad habits by not caring how you play, because, there’s no money involved. Worst of all, if you happen to get lucky and win some games playing against other novice poker players you may have gained a false confidence that will lead you into playing at cash games where you will come up against players with real skills, and the likelihood that you will lose money.

It pays to remember that in order to win serious money in poker you must develop skills, and there is no better place to hone those skills then at on-line poker. There is no better proof of this then the fact that the last two winners of the World Series of Poker learned to play and develop their skills on the Internet.

Bottom line: There are countless books available offering poker play strategies and online tutorials, that, in addition to practice play online, will develop a players all-round abilities.

In addition to the various forms of poker that can be played online; stud, hold ‘em, etc. there is video poker. Video poker differs from the other poker forms in that in traditional poker players compete against each other, and not the house. The house, whether an online casino or a brick and mortar establishment, makes its money from the “rake”. The rake is a percentage charged by the house for hosting and supervising the games.

However, in video poker the player is competing against a computer, and not against other players. The brain of a video poker computer is called a “random number generator”, which is a piece of technological hardware designed and set in the factory to generate poker hands randomly.

The rules of video poker are the same as they are in traditional poker, with the same hierarchy of hands:

- Royal Flush

- Straight Flush

- Four Of A Kind

- Full House

- Flush

- Straight

- Three Of A Kind

- Two Pair

- One Pair

- No Pair

Variations of video poker are once again the same as traditional poker; Deuces Wild, Joker’s Wild, etc. Most all video poker games, however, are based on five card draw, with Jacks or Better the most popular variation. Simply stated, to win, you must have Jacks or Better.

Odds on Cubs to Win Series

Friday, November 21st, 2008

Now is the time for all good Chicago Cubs fans to purchase their 2007 World Series futures, before numbers plummet as they always and quickly do.

Actually, the same advice could apply to backers of many Major League Baseball teams, though odds on some inevitably will rise rather than drop.

It’s just that long-suffering Cubs boosters are, like their beloved, retired Hall of Fame shortstop Ernie Banks, eternal optimists.

When futures are posted, Cubs fans usually are first in line at the betting windows and their numbers are legion.

The Las Vegas Hilton on Tuesday set futures for next year’s Fall Classic, even before the National League rep in this year’s World Series has been determined, and the Cubs opened at 30/1.

Had an annoucement not been made early in the week that Lou Piniella was replacing Dusty Baker as manager, they would have gone up at 40/1.

Either way, noted SuperBook oddsmaker and supervisor Jeff Sherman, “They’ll (odds) go down like they do every year.”

So will numbers on the perennial favorite New York Yankees, who were ousted early in the 2006 playoffs and went up at 9/2.

“Right now,” Sherman continued, “we’re just trying to write (tickets) and offer fair value.

“The Yankees will have trouble until they get some pitching.”

Somewhat surprisingly, St. Louis, which has reached the postseason for three straight years, was hung at 30/1.

“The Cardinals struggled at the end of the year,” Sherman said.

“They have Albert Pujols, but not much else.

“Pitchingwise, they have (Chris) Carpenter, but the Cards have a lot to do to improve.”

Perhaps.

But St. Louis, which lost the 2004 World Series to Boston in four straight, could earn another trip to the Fall Classic, this time to face Detroit, with a victory in New York on Wednesday.

The Cardinals defeated the New York Mets, who opened as a 7/1 co-second favorite to capture the 2007 World Series, 4-2 at home Tuesday night.

Two teams Sherman sounded high on were Minnesota and Florida.

“Going in, the Twins look good and they’ll be tough IF they can keep (Johan) Santana and (Francisco) Liriano healthy,” he said.

Minnesota, which opened 2007 at 7/1 along with the Mets, edged out the Tigers — 8/1 to take it all next year — for the AL Central Division title on the last day of the regular season, but were swept by Oakland in the divisional playoffs.

The Marlins were as high as 500/1 early in the 2006 campaign, but remained in the thick of the NL postseason chase into late September.

They’re 50/1 at the Hilton to cop a 2007 world championship.

“Florida had a good year,” Sherman observed.

“The Marlins are a young team with promise.”

Pennant odds for next season will be posted after the 2006 NL pennant race is decided.

These online gambling awards, in a way, intrigues people who work in the online gambling industry to work hard to stay close to the heart of the online player.
